Concern grew on Tuesday over the well-being of five young Iranian women who filmed themselves dancing without headscarves in a viral video, after allegations they had been arrested and forced into confessing.
The footage showed the women dancing with bare midriffs beneath highrises in the Tehran residential district of Ekbatan to the song "Calm Down" by Nigerian Afrobeats singer and rapper Rema.
It spread widely on TikTok and other social media channels last week around International Women's Day on March 8.
Activists, apparently from the Ekbatan area, first posted the video on Telegram and Twitter. They said authorities had been asking residents in the area if they knew the women, based on the footage.
On Tuesday the activists alleged the women had been detained and forced into making a video in which they expressed regret.
In the Islamic republic it is illegal for women to dance in public as well as to not wear the Islamic headscarf.
Abolition of the obligatory headscarf rule has been one of the chief demands of the protest movement that erupted in September after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the dress code.
After the initial viral footage of the five, another video emerged on social media of four women, their heads fully covered, stepping forward one by one to express regret.
It appeared to have been filmed in a similar Ekbatan area, but neither the video nor the circumstances in which it was made could be verified.
Whether the women had been released was also not immediately clear.
Ekbatan, a middle-income area popular with young professionals and families, saw repeated anti-regime actions in the past few months.
Rema retweeted video of the women dancing with their long hair uncovered and commented: "To all the beautiful women who are fighting for a better world, I'm inspired by you, I sing for you and I dream with you."
The song "Calm Down" became a global hit after Rema issued a remix with superstar Selena Gomez.
The video also caught the attention of German Member of the European Parliament Hannah Neumann.
"On Women's day, they published this video. Wouldn't be worth news, but they danced in Iran," Neumann tweeted.
"The regime investigated, put them in prison, forced them into confessions and to wear hijab," she alleged.
During the protests hundreds of people have been killed, including dozens of security force personnel.
Thousands were arrested for participating in what Iranian officials described as "riots" and blamed on hostile forces linked to the United States, Israel and their allies.

'More than 100 people with the aim of instilling terror in the people and students and to close schools were identified, arrested and investigated,' the ministry said in a statement on Saturday carried by state news agency IRNA.
The statement also pointed at possible links to MEK, an Albania-based exiled Iranian opposition group that Tehran considers a "terrorist" organisation.

Iran announced on Monday that the country's supreme leader has pardoned around 22,000 people arrested in the recent anti-government protests that swept the Islamic Republic.
The statement by Iran's judiciary head, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi, offered for the first time a glimpse of the full scope of the government's crackdown that followed the demonstrations over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the country's morality police.
It also suggests that Iran's theocracy now feels secure enough to admit the scale of the unrest, which represented one of the most-serious challenges to the establishment since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Tens of thousands also were detained in the purges that followed the revolution.
However, anger still remains in the country as it struggles through the collapse of the nation&rsquo;s currency, the rial, economic woes, and uncertainty over its ties to the wider world after the collapse of Tehran&rsquo;s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
Ejehi said a total of 82,656 prisoners and those facing charges had been pardoned. Of those, some 22,000 had been arrested amid the demonstrations, he said.
Those pardoned had not committed theft or violent crimes, he added.
His comments suggest that the true total of those detained in the demonstrations is even greater.
In February, Iran had acknowledged &ldquo;tens of thousands&rdquo; had been detained in the protests.
Monday's acknowledgement from Ejehi offered an even higher than what activists had previously cited.
However, there's been no mass release of prisoners documented in recent days by Iranian media reports or activists.
More than 19,700 people have been arrested during the protests, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that&rsquo;s been tracking the crackdown.
At least 530 people have been killed as authorities violently suppressed demonstrations, the group said.
Iran has not offered a death toll for months.
The announcement also came ahead of next week's celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year.
On Tuesday, some in Iran also mark nearly 4,000-year-old Persian tradition known as the Festival of Fire that's linked to the Zoroastrian religion.
Hard-liners discourage such celebrations, viewing them as pagan holdovers.

Iran's supreme leader said Monday that if a series of suspected poisonings at girls' schools are proven to be deliberate the culprits will receive the "most severe penalty" for committing an &ldquo;unforgivable crime.&rdquo;
It was the first time Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all matters of state, has spoken publicly about the suspected poisonings, which began late last year and have sickened hundreds of children.
Iranian officials only acknowledged them in recent weeks and have provided no details on who may be behind the attacks or what chemicals &mdash; if any &mdash; have been used.
Unlike neighboring Afghanistan, Iran has no history of religious extremists targeting women's education.
"Intelligence bodies and police must pursue this and find the roots of this crime and its perpetrators, they must be condemned to the most severe penalty possible, because this is not a small crime. It's a crime against the most innocent elements of a community, the children," Khamenei told Iranian news agency, IRINN.
Authorities have acknowledged suspected attacks at more than 50 schools across 21 of Iran's 30 provinces since November.
Videos of upset parents and schoolgirls in emergency rooms with IVs in their arms have flooded social media.
Iran has imposed stringent restrictions on independent media since the outbreak of nationwide protests in September, making it difficult to determine the nature and scope of the suspected poisonings.
The children affected in the poisonings have reportedly complained of headaches, heart palpitations, feeling lethargic or otherwise unable to move.
Some described smelling tangerines, chlorine or cleaning agents.
Reports suggest at least 400 schoolchildren have fallen ill since November.
There have been no reported fatalities.
As more attacks were reported Sunday, videos were posted on social media showing children complaining about pain in the legs, abdomen and dizziness.
State media have mainly referred to these as &ldquo;hysteric reactions.&rdquo;
The World Health Organization documented a similar phenomenon in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2012, when hundreds of girls across the country complained of strange smells and poisoning.
No evidence was found to support the suspicions, and the WHO said it appeared to be &ldquo;mass psychogenic illnesses.&rdquo;

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Saturday said, without elaborating, that investigators recovered &ldquo;suspicious samples&rdquo; in the course of their investigations into the incidents, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
He called for calm among the public, while also accusing the &ldquo;enemy's media terrorism&rdquo; of inciting more panic over the alleged poisonings.
However, it wasn't until the poisonings received international media attention that hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi announced an investigation into the incidents on Wednesday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday that the package under consideration by the EU's 27 member countries specifically seeks to deprive Russia of military equipment it needs and cannot get anywhere else.
It includes proposals to subject seven Iranian entities to sanctions to try to prevent Russia from using Iranian drones to hit Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
The proposals put forward by von der Leyen center on additional electronic weapons components for equipment such as drones, missiles, helicopters and thermal cameras. She had hinted at some of the measures during an EU-Ukraine summit early this month.
If the proposals are endorsed unanimously by the EU members, &ldquo;we have banned all tech products found on the battlefield,&rdquo; von der Leyen said.
Ambassadors were to assess what is called a 10th package of sanctions against Russia later Wednesday. It is further expected to be discussed during a Monday meeting of EU foreign ministers in hopes of having final approval by the Feb. 24 anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The package also tries to close loopholes that have allowed some measures from earlier packages to be circumvented and seeks to go after oligarchs who try to escape sanctions.
EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said it will also seek to target 100 additional individuals and entities, including those who have been involved in kidnappings and taking Ukraine children to Russia.
Usually, EU sanctions are decided in close cooperation with major Western partners like the United States and Britain. The partners usually announce similar packages within a very short time frame.&nbsp;

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency said Taraneh Alidoosti, the 38-year-old star of Asghar Farhadi's Oscar-winning &ldquo;The Salesman&rdquo; was released on bail. Her mother, Nadere Hakimelahi, had earlier said she would be released in a post on Instagram.
Alidoosti was among several Iranian celebrities to express support for the nationwide protests and criticise the authorities' violent clampdown on dissent. She had posted at least three messages in support of the protests on Instagram before her account was disabled.
One message had expressed solidarity with the first man to be executed on charges linked to the protests, which were triggered by the death of a woman in police custody and have escalated into widespread calls for the overthrow of Iran's ruling clerics.
The protests mark one of the biggest challenges to the Islamic Republic since it was established after the 1979 revolution. Security forces have used live ammunition, bird shot, tear gas and batons to disperse protesters, according to rights groups.
Mohsen Shekari was executed on December 9 after being charged by an Iranian court with blocking a street in Tehran and attacking a member of the country's security forces with a machete. A week later, Iran executed a second prisoner, Majidreza Rahnavard, by public hanging. He had been accused of stabbing two members of the paramilitary Basij militia, which is leading the crackdown.
Activists say at least a dozen people have been sentenced to death in closed-door hearings over charges linked to the protests.
"His name was Mohsen Shekari," Alidoosti wrote on an account with some 8 million followers before her arrest. "Every international organisation who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity.&rdquo; At least 516 protesters have been killed and over 19,000 people have been arrested, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that has closely monitored the unrest. Iranian authorities have not provided an official count of those killed or detained.

Iranian athourities have arrested author and illustrator Mehdi Bahman for speaking against the regime in a television interview, according to a Hindustan Times report.&nbsp;
As per the report, Bahman has also been sentenced to death for criticising the regime in his interview given to an Israeli television channel.

Iran said Monday it executed its second prisoner detained amid the nationwide protests now challenging the country's theocracy, airing footage on state television it claimed showed him stabbing a man to death and running away.
The execution of Majidreza Rahnavard, less than a month after he allegedly carried out the fatal stabbings of two security officials, shows the speed at which Iran now carries out death sentences for those detained in the demonstrations the government hopes to put down.
Activists warn that at least a dozen people already have been sentenced to death in closed-door hearings. At least 488 people have been killed since the demonstrations began in mid-September, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that's been monitoring the protests. Another 18,200 people have been detained by authorities.
Iran's Mizan news agency, under the country's judiciary, alleged Rahnavard stabbed two security force members to death November 17 in Mashhad and wounded four others.

Footage aired on state TV showed a man chasing another around a street corner, then standing over him and stabbing him after he fell against a parked motorbike. The assailant, which state TV alleged was Rahnavard, then fled.
The Mizan report identified the dead as "student" Basij, paramilitary volunteers under Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The Basij (ba-SEEJ') have deployed in major cities, attacking and detaining protesters, who in many cases have fought back.
The Mizan report offered no motive for Rahnavard's alleged attack. The report accused Rahnavard of trying to flee to a foreign country when he was arrested.

Iran is one of the world's top executioners. It typically executes prisoners by hanging. Already, Amnesty International said it obtained a document signed by one senior Iranian police commander asking an execution for one prisoner be &ldquo;completed in the shortest possible time' and that his death sentence be carried out in public as 'a heart-warming gesture towards the security forces.'&rdquo;

In a latest crackdown on protesters, Iranian authorities have sentenced at least five people to death for allegedly killing a member of country's paramilitary force.
Eleven others have been given jail sentence with the longest being 25 years, subject to appeal, as per state news ageny IRNA.
The state news agency added that at least 13 men and three minors have been charged with the killing of one Ruhollaj Ajamian, who was the member of Basij paramilitary volunteer branch of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard.

The alleged incident reportedly took place on November 12 in Karaj after a group of men chased and assaulted the victim with knives and stones.
The accused have been referred to as "rioters" by Iran media, a term being used to describe anti-government demonstrators.
Iran's revolutionary court which awarded the punishments reportedly did not provide any evidence to support its accusations.
The punishments come amid claims over morality police being shut down and ongoing protests &nbsp;over anti-hijab law which flared up after Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini's death in police custody.
