Stealth guided missile destroyer INS Imphal commissioned into Indian Navy 

INS Imphal was delivered to the Indian Navy on October 20 after completing a rigorous and comprehensive trial programme both in the harbour and at sea.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Stealth guided missile destroyer Imphal, which has an ability to fire extended range supersonic BrahMos missile, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar were present at the event that marked the formal induction into the Navy of the third of four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers, indigenously designed by the navy&rsquo;s in-house organisation, Warship Design Bureau and constructed by defence PSU Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai.
INS Imphal is the first warship to have been named after a city from the northeast, said Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command.

India announced multiple successful tests of the BrahMos missile on April 19. Successful maiden firing of the missile from warship INS Delhi from an upgraded modular launch was reported by news agency ANI.
The test "once again demonstrated long-range strike capability" of the BrahMos. The exercise also validated "integrated network-centric operations from frontline platforms".
Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force also announced a successful BrahMos exercise. Live firing of the missile was conducted from a Sukhoi Su30MkI fighter jet. IAF said that the missile "achieved a direct hit on the target" which was a decommissioned Indian Navy ship. The mission was conducted in "close coordination" by the air force and navy.
The BrahMos has been in news due to multiple reasons in recent times. When an Indian unarmed missile fell in Pakistan after being "accidentally" launched, it was speculated that it was a BrahMos missile.
On a positive note, the BrahMos is the subject of India's first major defence export deal. Philippines is buying the missiles for $375 million.

Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Thursday commissioned anti-submarine warfare ship INS Kavaratti into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. It is the last of four indigenously-built ASW&nbsp;ship&nbsp;under &lsquo;Project 28&rsquo;. The warship has been designed by the Navy&rsquo;s in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design and has been built by Kolkata&rsquo;s Garden Research Shipbuilders and Engineers. It has state-of-the-art weapons and a sensor that can detect and take action against hostile submarines.

Indian Navy’s First Women “Observers” on Warships

Marking a landmark moment in the history of the Indian naval aviation, two women officers have been awarded &ldquo;Wings&rdquo; at INS Garuda on graduating as &ldquo;Observers&rdquo; in the helicopter stream. Sub Lieutenant (SLt) Kumudini Tyagi and SLt Riti Singh would be the first women airborne combatants who would be operating from warships. Observers, also referred to as Airborne Tacticians, act as airborne coordinators of maritime warfare and operate various state-of-the-art equipment including sonics, radars, sonars and communication equipment, informed SLt. Tyagi. &nbsp;&ldquo;We have only completed our basic training to be qualified as Observers in the Indian Navy. We have flown for 60 hours on the Dornier aircraft (fixed wing). We will be studying 8-9 months more for our helicopter training,&rdquo; added SLt. Singh. Previously, entry of women was confined to the fixed wing aircraft that took off and landed ashore. Women have been employed in different ranks in Indian Navy but never before have they been posted on warships.
