Arjuna award-winning Indian hockey player Varun Kumar was on Tuesday booked under the stringent POCSO Act by the Bengaluru Police after a woman accused the defender of sexually abusing her multiple times when she was a minor.
The 22-year-old, in her complaint, said that she came in contact with Varun in 2018 through Instagram, and the player raped her on multiple occasions promising her marriage when she was 17.
She said Varun was training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru when she met him. Varun, who was awarded the Arjuna in 2021, was recently promoted as a DSP in Punjab Police.
"Based on the complaint received from the woman, we have registered a case on Monday against the Hockey player under appropriate section of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code," the Bengaluru Police said in a statement.
Varun, who was in the Indian standby list for the Tokyo Olympics, is currently training with the national squad in Bhubaneswar for the upcoming FIH Pro League. India are scheduled to face Spain in their opening encounter on February 10.
There was speculation that Varun, a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, is on the run, but Hockey India rubbished the rumour.
"He is not absconding. He is in Bhubaneswar with the team," a Hockey India source told PTI.
Varun, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, made his debut for India in 2017.

With India facing a less experienced Spanish side in their Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 opener on Friday, Indian coach Graham Reid feels the team needs to be ready for their opponents as experience is often overrated at tournaments such as the World Cups.
Most of the Spanish players have played less than 100 international matches while India has a mix of experienced players who have played more than 100 matches alongside the young guns.
"Experience is a little bit overrated sometimes in big tournaments like this and we have to play our best, that is the key." Graham Reid said during an interview.
"Beware of Spain as they can perform much higher than what they think they can. There is nothing to lose (for them) and (you should) watch out for them. That is the reality," he further added.
India open their campaign against Spain at the brand new Birsa Munda Stadium on Friday in Pool A.

The newly built Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela will host Team India's first game of the 2023 Hockey World Cup against Spain on January 13.

Hockey World Cup 2023 : The Indian Hockey team will take on Spain in their opening match of the 2023 Hockey World Cup on January 13. The match will take place at the newly built Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela.
India will be hosting the quadrennial event for the fourth time in tournament history.
The schedule was released by the International Hockey Federation on Tuesday after the draw was announced on September 8. Team India is placed in Group D alongside England, Spain, and Wales. India will play against England in their second group game followed by Wales in the last group D encounter.
After winning the Tokyo 2022 Olympic Bronze, the Indians are expected to go through to the knockouts with ease. All of India's group stage opponents are ranked lower than them but will surely look to give the number 5 ranked Indian team a tough fight at the World Cup.
Coach Graham Reid's Men in Blue will be hoping to reach the final on January 29 in Bhubaneswar next year.

In his upcoming book Will Power, the Dutchman wrote that during the 2018 Commonwealth games Mapreet asked a player to stop playing well so that his friends could get in the team.
In the joint statement, players said that this is a complete breach of trust and his duty of care as a coach as the remarks make them feel vulnerable in such situations.
"We are in the process of pursuing legal remedies against Mr. Sjoerd Marijne and the publishers of the book in question, Harper Collins." Both the teams said if such an incident had indeed taken place, Marijne should have reported the matter to either Hockey India or his erstwhile employer, Sports Authority of India, which he didn't.
"We would like to collectively question Mr Sjoerd Marijne, that if any of the claimed incidence took place under his watch there should be record of an allegation filed to Hockey India or the Sports Authority of India at the time.
"On checking with the authorities, we have found no such record of complaint," the statement read.
The teams further added that by bringing such false and fabricated allegations, Marijne has questioned the integrity of the players. 
Marijne coached the men's hockey team for nine months before his unceremonious exit following a dismal show at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
He later took charge of the women's team and guided them to a historic fourth-place finish at Tokyo Olympics.

Star Indian hockey goalkeeper, PR Sreejesh, won the prestigious World Games Athlete of the Year award for his consistent show in 2021.
He became only the second Indian and first Indian man to receive the accolade. India women's captain Rani Rampal had won the prize in 2019. TheWorldGames.org conducted the voting and Sreejesh finished well clear at the top of the 24-strong nomination list.
