A 23-year old Indian-American student at Purdue University, who was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana this week, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities.
Sameer Kamath, a US citizen, was found dead in the woods on February 5 in NICHES Land Trust - Crow&rsquo;s Grove in Williamsport, Indiana.
Justin Brummett, Coroner at Warren County Coroner's Office, said in a press release Wednesday that a forensic autopsy was performed on Kamath on February 6 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The press release from the coroner's office said that the preliminary cause of death is a "gunshot wound of the head" and Kamath died by "suicide". A toxicology report is pending.
&ldquo;Through extensive investigation by the Warren County Coroner's Office in conjunction with multiple other local and federal agencies, we are now able to release a preliminary cause and manner of death," the release said.
The coroner's office said that prior to releasing this information, Kamath&rsquo;s family was notified of the results.
This is an ongoing investigation with the Warren County Coroner's Office, Warren County Sheriff's Office, Purdue University Administration and other supporting agencies, it said.
&ldquo;Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and we hope they are respected during such a difficult time," Brummett said.
A report in The Purdue Exponent said that Kamath was a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering. The report added that mechanical engineering head Eckhard Groll said in an email to the ME community that Kamath was from Massachusetts.
He &ldquo;received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and came to Purdue in the summer of 2021,&rdquo; the Purdue Exponent report added.
Kamath was to graduate from the doctoral program in 2025, according to his LinkedIn profile, the report said.
Kamath&rsquo;s death is the latest in a string of tragic incidents among students of Indian-origin and from India in the US.
Last month, another Purdue student 19-year old Neel Acharya, who had been reported missing, was found dead on the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. Acharya was a US citizen. Authorities have said that there was no trauma or significant injuries found during the autopsy on Acharya and "no foul play is suspected at this time".
Last month, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was hammered to death by a homeless drug addict in Georgia. Earlier this month, another Indian student, Syed Mazahir Ali, hailing from Hyderabad and pursuing Masters in information technology, was chased and brutally attacked by three unidentified men in Chicago.

A 78-year-old Indian-American has filed a lawsuit against his former US-based employer for allegedly terminating him for speaking in Hindi to a dying relative.

A 78-year-old Indian-American engineer was fired from his long-time job with a missile defence contractor in the US state of Alabama for speaking in Hindi with his dying relative in India over a video call, a media report quoted a lawsuit filed by him.
Anil Varshney, a Senior Systems Engineer with Huntsville missile defence contractor Parsons Corporation, recently filed a federal lawsuit alleging systemic discriminatory actions that left him jobless in October last year.
A white co-worker heard Varshney speaking in Hindi on a telephone call with his dying brother-in-law in India, AL.COM reported on Monday.
Varshney on September 26, 2022 &ldquo;received a video call from his elderly brother-in-law K.C. Gupta, [who] was on his deathbed in India and called to say goodbye to Varshney".
&ldquo;Knowing the dire situation and that he may never have the opportunity to speak to (Gupta) again, Varshney stepped into an empty cubicle and accepted the call,&rdquo; the suit said.
&ldquo;Before doing so, he made sure there were no classified materials or anything else pertaining to MDA&rsquo;s (Missile Defence Agency) or Parsons&rsquo; work anywhere near him,&rdquo; said the lawsuit, which also names Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin as legal representative for the MDA.
The two spoke for approximately two minutes in Hindi when another worker interrupted Varshney and asked whether he was on a video call, which he confirmed, according to the suit that was filed in June in the northern district of Alabama.
&ldquo;(The other worker) told Varshney that the call was not allowed and Varshney immediately hung up. The call was the last time they spoke before Gupta passed away.&rdquo; The suit claims the other worker was &ldquo;intimidated by Varshney speaking in a language he did not understand&rdquo; and &ldquo;falsely and intentionally&rdquo; reported that the Indian-American &ldquo;committed a security violation by revealing confidential information and/or accepting this call during a confidential meeting or with confidential information in the background".
"Varshney accepted the call from his brother-in-law in an empty cubicle and spoke to him for approximately two minutes,&rdquo; reads the lawsuit.
&ldquo;Despite there being no policy prohibiting the call, and without any investigation, the defendants claimed Varshney committed a serious security violation and fired him. Worse, they blackballed him from future [Missile Defence Agency] work, effectively ending his career and life of service to MDA and the US government,&rdquo; the lawsuit said.
The suit added that Parsons in a call informed Varshney that his &ldquo;privileges at MDA [had] been revoked&rdquo; and told him to meet the supervisor at the office.
&ldquo;When Varshney arrived, (the supervisor) and MDA security personnel met him in the lobby, escorted him to his cubicle, and instructed him to pack up his personal belongings,&rdquo; the suit said.
&ldquo;MDA security personnel opened and searched through every file in his cubicle and through his personal belongings. Varshney was humiliated and defendants were essentially accusing him of being a spy simply for speaking in a foreign language to a dying family member." Parsons in a response filed with the court on July 24 said it &ldquo;denies it engaged in any of the wrongdoing alleged by plaintiff or that plaintiff is entitled to any relief whatsoever&rdquo;.
Parsons also asked for the suit&rsquo;s dismissal with prejudice and demanded Varshney pay its attorneys&rsquo; fees and costs, the report says.
Parsons representative Birmingham attorney Sharon L. Miller has not yet responded to a request for further comment from AL.COM.
Varshney immigrated to the US in 1968 and settled in Huntsville where they became American citizens. His wife Sashi has worked at NASA since 1989.
Varshney was once lauded as &ldquo;Contractor of the Year&rdquo; in systems engineering and received a letter of MDA recommendation &ldquo;for saving USD 5 million on the ground-based missile defense programme&rdquo;.
The lawsuit said he provided &ldquo;engineering support for the development of integrated and layered missile defence systems which defend the United States and allied partner forces against ballistic missile threats".
The suit says Varshney seeks reinstatement to a position &ldquo;comparable to his former position&rdquo;, the reinstatement of privileges, and the revocation (or removal) of any disciplinary records in his file.
If he is not reinstated to his job level, Varshney seeks &ldquo;front pay including benefits&rdquo;.
He also seeks compensatory damages for &ldquo;mental anguish and emotional distress&rdquo;, along with punitive and liquidated damages and attorneys&rsquo; fees, according to the report.

47-year-old Indian-American data analyst was killed on the spot after being struck by a bus at Boston's international airport where he had gone to pick up a friend, according to a media report.
Vishwachand Kolla, originally from Andhra Pradesh, was an employee of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company.
He was at the Logan International Airport, Boston to pick up a visiting musician from the airport travelling to Boston when the incident took place on March 28, US media report said.
Massachusetts State Police said Kolla was at the lower level of Terminal B to pick up a friend around 5 p.m. when he was struck by a bus.
"Kolla was standing on the driver's side of his Acura SUV while, simultaneously, the Dartmouth Transportation motor coach was travelling on the roadway. The investigation indicates that the middle of the bus made contact with Kolla and dragged him along the driver's side of his SUV," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
An off-duty nurse rushed to help Kolla but he died at the scene, the report added.

According to a statement, Neel&rsquo;s computational model contains a library of possible shapes for a given RNA molecule based on its atomic structure. A statistical method assigns weights to each structure in the library, favouring structures that closely resemble experimental data. By using 2D histograms for reweighting, his model eliminates the need to assign chemical shift data.

The resolution moved by Kshama Sawant, who is an upper-caste Hindu, was approved by the Seattle City Council by six to one vote on February 21. Seattle has now become the first US city to outlaw caste discrimination.

Condemning a resolution passed by the Seattle City Council on caste discrimination, an eminent Indian-American state senator alleged the move showed the rise of 'Hinduphobia' in the United States.
"I condemn in the strongest terms the ordinance passed by the Seattle City Council. Caste discrimination simply doesn't exist now," Niraj Antani, the first Hindu and Indian-American state senator in Ohio's history, said.
"Adding it to their non-discrimination policy is Hinduphobic, and is a tool those that are anti-Hindu use to discriminate against Hindus in America, in India, and around the world," he said.
Antani is the youngest Indian-American elected official in the nation.
"Instead of passing this racist policy, Seattle should be passing policies to protect Hindus from discrimination," he said.

The ordinance adds "caste" to the city's anti-discrimination ordinances.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), along with numerous organisations who had signed a joint letter opposing the Seattle City Council's caste ordinance, in a statement condemned the decision to include caste as part of its anti-discrimination policy.
The groups, while fully supporting attempts to tackle discrimination, raised concerns that such serious allegations require data showing systemic abuse &ndash; a standard the city had failed to meet by relying on faulty data that was also pointed out in the survey from Carnegie Endowment in 2021, the statement said.
"This law itself is inherently discriminatory because, unlike other categories such as race, gender, religion, ancestry, etc. it singles out the South Asian community as requiring special monitoring," said CoHNA president Nikunj Trivedi.
"In taking this step, the city has relied on information from groups that have openly called for a dismantling of Hinduism &ndash; thus becoming an avenue for platforming hate against a minority group. It seems Seattle city is also openly saying that South Asians require more monitoring than all other groups," he said.
"I was disappointed at how my voice was ignored. The council gave voice only to selected voices, without taking into consideration the fact that not all groups in the Dalit-Bahajun community support such a divisive and discriminatory bill," added CoHNA Steering Committee member and Dalit community activist Aldrin Deepak.

Sahni was accused of conspiring to conceal the two women for her own financial gain, while paying the victims' families in India for their work. She also told the victims that they would be arrested and deported if they spoke to US officials.
She instructed the victims to tell other people that they were related to Sahni, and Sahni use fake names and addresses in furtherance of the conspiracy. From 2013 to 2019, Sahni also failed to pay certain taxes notwithstanding that the victims were Sahni&rsquo;s household employees.

A prominent Indian-American attorney has alleged discrimination due to her Sikh faith by her colleagues in the Republican party. 54-year-old Harmeet Dhillon is contesting against Ronna McDaniel for the post of Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman.
Dhillon on 16 January 2023 said that "no amount of threats" to her or her team, or "bigoted attacks" on her faith will deter her.
&ldquo;Threats incoming today. One of Ronna's state chair supporters responded to my message about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by threatening me with consequences if I didn't make the "annoying" text messages from voters stop (no one on my team has asked anyone to text members),&rdquo; she alleged.
&ldquo;Another person on my team got a threatening call from a $$$ RNC consultant for raising questions about RNC's highest-paid vendors. Message delivered was that my supporter would never work on a certain presidential campaign or for RNC if they didn't shut up,&rdquo; she said from her verified Twitter handle Pnjaban.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairperson election will be held on 27 January.

The Indian-American community received lavish praise from lawmaker Rich McCormick during his first speech in the US House of Representatives, as per news agency ANI.
The representative for 6th Congressional District of Georgia said that despite being around 1% of the American population, Indian-Americans contribute to about 6% of the taxes.
McCormick added that 1 out of every 5 doctors in his community is of Indian origin. "They represent some of the best citizens we have in America," the lawmaker said.

An Indian-origin man has been arrested in the US for allegedly driving his car off a cliff, while his wife and children were inside the vehicle.
Dharmesh Patel of Pasadena, California was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse. Patel allegedly drove his Tesla off a cliff, and the car landed 250-300 feet down, at Devil's Slide in San Mateo County.
Patel, his wife, and two children aged 4 and 9 years were rescued on 2 January 2023.
The rescue involved firefighters who rappelled down the cliff to save the two children. A helicopter crew rescued the two adults from the vehicle.
The rescue was described as almost miraculous, The New York Times newspaper said.
&ldquo;Based on the evidence collected, investigators developed probable cause to believe this incident was an intentional act,&rdquo; it said in a statement.

While Haritha was pulled out of the water soon after falling, the bodies of Narayan and Gokul were recovered a day later.
According to a statement released by officials with CCSO, "Deputies stationed at a substation in the area were called to the lake after two men and a woman were walking on the frozen lake and fell through the ice." Woods Canyon Lake is located east of Payson in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. It is an area popular among hikers, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

An Indian-American entrepreneur and her dog perished in a fire which broke out at her Dix Hills cottage home in Long Island, New York on December 14, officials said.
According to police, they responded to the blaze at 2:53 am on December 14 inside the cottage in Dix Hills. Two police officers and a sergeant attempted to save Tanya Bathija (32), but the flames were too strong.
The victim died in the incident before local fire departments were able to fully extinguish the blaze. The policemen were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment after inhaling smoke, they said on Saturday.
The Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) said after an initial investigation, the fire has been determined to be non-criminal.
&ldquo;Bathija lived in the cottage behind her parents&rsquo; house on Carlls Straight Path,&rdquo; Suffolk Police Det Lt Kevin Beyrer, head of the department&rsquo;s homicide squad, said.

Bathija&rsquo;s father, Gobind Bathija, a businessman and a community leader, woke up early to exercise before work on December 14 when he looked out of the window and noticed that the cottage was on fire, Beyrer said.
&ldquo;He alerted his wife and called 911. They ran outside towards the cottage and tried to get their daughter out, but it was fully engulfed,&rdquo; the officer added.
Tanya Bathija was well-known in the community in Dix Hills, an affluent hamlet on Long Island in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York.

She was also involved in both the Bellport and Patchogue chamber of commerce and worked with the Boys and Girls Club and Long Island Head Start.

US: 16-year-old Indian American jumps off Golden Gate Bridge, dies

Community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria said this is fourth incident involving an Indian American jumping off the Golden Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt.

An Indian American teenager is believed to have jumped off the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and died, according to his parents and officials of the US Coastal Guards.
The 16-year-old boy&rsquo;s bicycle, phone and bag were found on the bridge. The twelfth grader is believed to have jumped off the bridge at around 4.58 pm, they said.
The coastal guards said they immediately carried out a two-hour search and rescue operation after they confirmed they saw &ldquo;a human&rdquo; jumping from the bridge.
They said there is little reason to believe that the boy is alive.
Community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria said this is fourth incident involving an Indian American jumping off the Golden Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt.
According to Bridge Rail Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works towards ending suicides on the Golden Gate Bridge, 25 people ended their lives here last year and nearly 2,000 suicide cases have been reported since the bridge opened in 1937.

The state government is working to create a 20-foot-wide iron mesh on both sides of the 1.7-mile bridge. However, the project that was scheduled to be completed by January this year is running behind schedule and its construction cost has jumped from &euro;137.26 million to nearly &euro;386.64 million. Work on this project started in 2018.
