A 21-year-old man in Aligarh district has found himself behind bars in Pakistan due to a romantic relationship with a girl from across the border, officials here said.
The young man, identified as Badal Babu, was arrested on December 28 by Pakistani authorities in the Punjab province for illegally crossing into the neighbouring country without any legal documents, the officials said.
The shockwave from this unexpected incident reached Babu's village through the media. His parents, who had believed their son was working in a factory in Delhi, were shocked to learn of his arrest through a report sourced from a Pakistani news portal.
Babu's father, Kirpal Singh, who lives in Khitkari village under Barla police station area, told media that the family learned of their son's arrest via social media.
"We couldn't believe it. For us, till this moment we knew that he was working in Delhi, but the next moment we are shocked to discover that he's in a Pakistani jail. It's like something out of a movie," he said, in disbelief.
The family has now appealed to the Indian government, particularly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to intervene and negotiate with Pakistan for Babu's release.
"We want our son back and we don't know how to bring him home. We are calling on the prime minister to help us," Babu's mother said, speaking to reporters.
"He was a simple boy. He never did anything like this before," she added.
Aligarh Superintendent of Police (Rural) Amrit Jain confirmed that they had received a memorandum from the family and would be taking the matter up with the Ministry of External Affairs.
"We will approach the proper channels to provide whatever assistance is necessary and work towards establishing contact with Babu. Our primary goal is to secure his release from custody in Pakistan," Jain said in a statement.
According to family sources, Babu was very active on Facebook, where he reportedly connected with a girl from Pakistan. After informing his parents that he would be heading to Delhi for work, Babu left his village after Raksha Bandhan in August.
Just before Diwali, his family received a video call on WhatsApp, in which Babu reassured them that he was safe, had found a job and was using a friend's phone because he could not afford his own. His family later learned that Babu had somehow crossed the international border near Jammu, although these details remain unconfirmed, the sources said.

Vajpayee took a bus ride to Lahore on February 19, 1999. He and Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif signed the Lahore Declaration after a historic summit here. The agreement signalled a breakthrough, but just months later a Pakistani intrusion led to the Kargil War.
Wednesday is Vajpayee&rsquo;s 100th birth anniversary.
"Vajpayee's visit to Lahore in 1999 was a defining moment. Even though the chance was missed, we should try again. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who follows Vajpayee's vision, leading India, and Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz's brother, in charge in Pakistan, there is a real possibility of restarting the peace process," says Khan, who is a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Khan says the future of the region depends on free trade and unrestricted movement between countries.
"Peace in the region is not just a good idea &ndash; it is necessary for growth and prosperity," the Punjab Speaker adds.
Another senior PML-N leader from Punjab, Mohammad Mehdi, describes Vajpayee's Lahore visit as historic. He believes the visit could have led to lasting peace if the Kargil conflict had not happened.
"The Western media paid a lot of attention to Vajpayee&rsquo;s visit because it came just months after both countries became nuclear powers," Mehdi says, referring to nuclear tests conducted by India and Pakistan in May 1998.
"There was excitement, especially within PML-N ranks, when Vajpayee arrived in Lahore in February 1999. His speech, saying 'Pakistan is a reality, and both countries now need to move forward and leave the past behind,' gave hope to many," Mehdi recalls.
Unfortunately, the Kargil conflict happened soon after, and the peace efforts were unsuccessful, he says.
Mehdi says Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) held protests during Vajpayee&rsquo;s visit, which many believe were organised by the military led by General Pervez Musharraf.
"Jamaat-i-Islami workers even attacked the Turkish ambassador&rsquo;s car near Lahore Fort, mistaking it for an Indian delegation," he says.
Mehdi believes back-channel talks between Pakistan and India are still happening.
"Right now, relations between the two countries are at their lowest point. Neither country has an envoy in the other's capital. However, businessmen on both sides desperately want to restore ties to improve trade and use shorter routes through Pakistan to reach Central Asia and Europe," he says.
Political expert Brig (retd.) Farooq Hameed says Nawaz Sharif should have involved the powerful Pakistan Army in the peace process.
"The initiative failed because the military was not consulted, which led to the Kargil conflict and ended the peace process. If Nawaz Sharif had taken the military on board before Vajpayee&rsquo;s visit, the chances of the peace talks being successful would have been higher."
Hameed says Nawaz has repeatedly shown interest in improving ties with India, including his desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi after returning to Pakistan last year from a four-year self-imposed exile in London. However, he pointed out, that Nawaz's younger brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has not made any recent public statements indicating a similar desire.
"Nawaz should first consult Shehbaz, who enjoys the military establishment&rsquo;s favour, to determine if he shares this vision for improved relations with India," he says.
He also notes the lack of progress after Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Pakistan recently.
"Most Pakistanis are not anti-India. Unlike in India, politicians here do not need to criticise India to win elections," Hameed says.
However, terrorism remains a major obstacle to reconciliation, he says.
India has often accused Pakistan of supporting terrorism, while Pakistan now blames India for terror attacks in Balochistan.

The Indian Express reported, quoting sources, that the Pakistan army fired at Chenab post opposite Allah Mai De Kothey at around 5:50 pm. The BSF returned fire from two posts situated in RS Pura and Makwal.
The aggression was in violation of the 2021 ceasefire agreement.
The BSF spokesperson, in a statement, said that the forces have been put on 'high alert'.
Notably, the incident comes days before the Prime Minister's visit to Jammu, scheduled on February 20, where he will lay the foundation stone for developmental projects.
Meanwhile, this is Pakistan's second aggression along the Loc in recent months.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the eagerly anticipated schedule for the ODI World Cup 2023, featuring a high-stakes match between cricket rivals India and Pakistan at the world's largest cricket stadium on October 15. The grand finale of the tournament will also take place at the gargantuan venue in Ahmedabad on November 19.
Kicking off on October 5, defending champions England will face runners-up New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which boasts a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators, surpassing even the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by 32,000 seats.
The two semifinals of this mega event will be held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium and Kolkata's Eden Gardens, both renowned venues with a rich cricketing legacy, on November 15 and 16, respectively.
Hosts India will commence their campaign with an exciting clash against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. Notably, the World Cup will venture into northeast India for the first time, with Guwahati selected as one of the 12 venues to host matches, including warm-up games.
A total of 10 venues across Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata will witness thrilling encounters during the tournament.
In addition to Hyderabad, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram will host warm-up games from September 29 to October 3, adding to the excitement leading up to the main event.
The ICC finalized the venues after discussions with 12 hosting associations in Mumbai. Wankhede Stadium previously held the 2011 World Cup final, where India clinched victory after 28 years, while Eden Gardens hosted the 1987 edition's summit clash between Australia and England.
Pakistan had expressed a desire to relocate their match against India to either Chennai, Bengaluru, or Kolkata. However, both the BCCI and ICC rejected the request, resulting in the match being held as planned.
This year's World Cup will feature 10 teams, with India, as the host nation, directly qualifying along with Afghanistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa through the 2020-2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. The remaining two teams will emerge from the World Cup Qualifiers currently taking place in Zimbabwe.
During the World Cup in India, the 10 teams will participate in a round-robin league, playing each other once in 45 matches. The top teams will advance to the semifinals, culminating in an exhilarating final showdown.

The personnel fired in that direction, and during the search, they recovered 2.47 kg heroin wrapped in a yellow polythene, the officials said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that the 1971 India-Pakistan war proves that the partition of India along religious lines was a 'historic mistake'. 
The minister made the statement at at the inauguration of “Swarnim Vijay Parv” at India Gate in the national capital, marking 50 years of India’s victory in the 1971 war. 
Singh added that India won the direct war against Pakistan in 1971 and it will also win the ongoing indirect war against Pakistan-induced terrorism.
