China&rsquo;s national legislature on Saturday adopted a new law on the protection and exploitation of the land border areas. The law, which becomes operational from January 1 next year could have bearing on Beijing&rsquo;s border dispute with India.
The law states that &lsquo;the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People&rsquo;s Republic of China are sacred and inviolable&rsquo;. It also stipulates the state shall, following the principle of equality, mutual trust and friendly consultation, handle land border-related affairs with neighbouring countries through negotiations to properly resolve disputes and longstanding border issues.
The law further states that the Chinese military &lsquo;shall carry out border duties&rsquo; including &lsquo;organising drills&rsquo; and &lsquo;resolutely prevent, stop and combat invasion, encroachment, provocation and other acts&rsquo;.
A significant aspect of the new law includes state support for the construction of border towns, improving their functioning.
India and Bhutan are the two countries with which China is yet to finalise the border agreements, while Beijing resolved the boundary disputes with 12 other neighbours.

China&rsquo;s national legislature on Saturday adopted a new law on the protection and exploitation of the land border areas. The law, which becomes operational from January 1 next year could have bearing on Beijing&rsquo;s border dispute with India.

Close on the heels of reports of incursion by Chinese forces in Uttarakhand, Indian soldiers reportedly engaged in a tense standoff with PLA troops who transgressed in Arunachal Pradesh last week across the Line of Actual Control or LAC.
A report by NDTV, quoting sources, said that the physical engagement of Indian and Chinese soldiers likely lasted for a few hours before soldiers of both sides disengaged.
"There is a difference in perception of the Line of Actual Control in this area, and both sides undertake patrolling activities upto their line of perception," report said quoting sources.
There was no damage to Indian defences in the sector.
This is an area where Chinese incursions have been reported several times in the past.
On August 30, close to 100 Chinese soldiers transgressed 5 km across LAC&nbsp;in Barahoti region and returned after a few hours from the area guarded by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, news agency PTI reported.

Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat said that after the faceoff with Indian forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Galwan valley and other areas in the Ladakh region last year, the Chinese Army realised that they needed better training and preparation.
While speaking to India Today, he also mentioned that China had to make changes in its deployment in the mountainous terrains of the Himalayas post Galwan clash.
Rawat pointed out that Chinese soldiers are mostly enlisted for a short duration and don't have experience of fighting in the mountain terrain of the Himalayas, whereas soldiers in India have specialised training and are very adept at warfare in difficult zones like the Tibet autonomous region.
