India's foreign ministry has rejected the allegations saying it is not India's policy to to interfere in the democratic processes of other countries.

India and Pakistan had tried to "interfere" in Canada's federal elections in the 2019 and 2021 general elections, the Canadian spy agency has alleged, according to a media report on Friday.
An unclassified summary by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) alleging the interference was tabled as part of the Federal Commission of Inquiry examining possible meddling by China, India, Russia and others in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
According to the document, attempts were made by India and Pakistan to interfere in Canada's elections, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
India has strongly rejected as "baseless" allegations of its interference in Canadian elections and asserted that the core issue has been Ottawa's meddling in New Delhi's internal affairs.
According to Canadian media reports, Canada's federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference is looking to examine allegations of meddling by India in the last two general elections.
"We have seen media reports about the Canadian commission enquiring into ...We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in New Delhi in February.
"It is not the government of India's policy to interfere in the democratic processes of other countries. In fact, quite on the reverse, it is Canada which has been interfering in our internal affairs," Jaiswal said.
In 2021, the government of India had "intent to interfere and likely conducted clandestine activities," including using an Indian government proxy agent in Canada, the CSIS alleged in the documents.
Two years earlier, in 2019, "Government of Pakistan officials in Canada attempted to clandestinely influence Canadian federal politics with the aim of furthering the Government of Pakistan's interests in Canada," the report cited the CSIS documents.
The spy agency alleges that in 2021, the Indian government's foreign interference activities "were centred on a small number of electoral districts." The Indian government targeted those ridings because there was a perception by India that "a portion of Indo-Canadian voters were sympathetic to the Khalistani movement or pro-Pakistan political stances," the CSIS document said.
The CSIS has amassed "a body of intelligence" that indicates a government of India "proxy agent may have attempted to interfere in democratic processes" by providing illegal financial support to pro-Indian candidates, the document said.
"Any such financial contribution could have remained unknown to the candidate," CSIS said, without identifying the specific ridings or candidates that may have been subject to India's alleged meddling in 2021.
CSIS Director David Vigneault told the public inquiry that intelligence is not necessarily fact and it may require further investigation while all documents caution about the summaries being possibly uncorroborated, single-sourced or incomplete, according to the report The foreign interference public inquiry proceedings, which began last week, have largely been geared toward alleged foreign interference by China. However, Pakistan and India have come up in other documents tabled at the inquiry.
According to the report, a summary of an October 2022 meeting between CSIS and the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections &mdash; the agency that enforces Canada's federal election laws &mdash; said "the two main state actors involved in the last election were China and India." A public summary of a classified CSIS briefing provided to political parties dated June 2019 also lists India and Pakistan, among other state actors that could engage in meddling in Canada.
The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&rsquo;s allegations last year of a &ldquo;potential&rdquo; involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.
Days after Trudeau&rsquo;s allegations, India announced temporarily suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country.
India has rejected Trudeau's allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and accused Canada of giving space to Khalistani extremists targeting India.
India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

The report was published by the Global News outlet on February 1 after obtaining it under the Access to Information Act. The report names India and China as top threats.&nbsp;
The declassified document, dated Feb. 24, 2023, is titled, &ldquo;Briefing to the Minister of Democratic Institutions on Foreign Interference.&rdquo; It called China &ldquo;by far the most significant threat.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We know that the PRC (People's Republic of China) sought to clandestinely and deceptively influence the 2019 and 2021 federal elections,&rdquo; the briefing released by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service states.
The Global News notes that the report was entirely redacted except for a single sentence mentioning that "India engages in foreign interference activities".&nbsp;
The report comes amidst the frayed ties between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. &nbsp;
The Canadian media has been persistently raising foreign interference since last year when the Globe and Mail first reported on February 17, &ldquo;China employed a sophisticated strategy to disrupt Canada&rsquo;s democracy in the 2021 federal election campaign as Chinese diplomats and their proxies backed the re-election of Justin Trudeau&rsquo;s Liberals &ndash; but only to another minority government &ndash; and worked to defeat Conservative politicians considered to be unfriendly to Beijing.&rdquo;&nbsp;
This report was based on intelligence documents.
However, this is the first time that India's name has been mentioned. India and Canada have been seeking to mend their relations after Prime Minister Justine Trudeau in the parliament on September 18 last year there were &ldquo;credible allegations&rdquo; of a potential link between Indian agents and the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18, 2023.

India has already constituted a probe committee to investigate allegations.
Last week, Trudeau said that his decision to make allegations in public was intended to "put a chill" on them from repeating a similar action.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told the Rajya Sabha earlier this month that Canada has not shared any specific evidence or inputs with India.
Days after Trudeau's allegations in September, India temporarily suspended the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity.

That makes Canada a significant player in India's food trade.
Senior export merchant at Winnipeg-based crop trader Parrish &amp; Heimbecker, Kevin Price told Reuters that Indian offers for Canadian supplies have dropped 6% to around $770 per metric ton.&nbsp;

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Thursday advised TV news channels to refrain from giving platforms to those belonging to proscribed organisations or facing charges of terrorism and serious crimes.
In an advisory to all private satellite TV channels, the ministry said it has come to its notice that "a person" in a foreign country who faces serious cases of crime including terrorism was invited for a discussion on a television channel.
During the discussion, the person made several remarks detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, its security and friendly relations with a foreign state, the ministry said, without naming the person or the news channel.
The remarks of the person also had the potential of disturbing public order in the country, the ministry added.
While the government upholds media freedom and respects its rights under the Constitution, the content telecast by the TV channels must adhere to the provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, the ministry said.
"In the light of the above, television channels are advised to refrain from giving any platform to reports/references about and views/agenda of persons of such background including those against whom there are charges of serious crimes/terrorism and belonging to organizations which have been proscribed by law, having regard to the reasonable restrictions laid down under Article 19(2) of the Constitution and mentioned under sub-section (2) of Section 20 of the CTN Act," it added.&nbsp;

Analysts believe that the rising diplomatic tensions between Canada and India would not affect the trade much but might have chilling effects on Investments

Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have reached new heights, with serious repercussions for their long-standing economic ties. The recent exchange of diplomatic measures, including expulsions and visa suspensions, has cast a shadow over the bilateral trade relationship, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, Canadian pension fund investments in India, and even Canadian brands operating in India are caught in the cross-fire facing social boycott.
All this started when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of killing Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Canadian government went to an extent of expelling an Indian official from the country. Soon after, India retaliated and asked a Canadian diplomat to leave.&nbsp;
Here are the economic ramifications of the escalating tensions between India and Canada.&nbsp;
<h2>Bilateral Trade</h2>
The bilateral trade between India and Canada has grown significantly in recent years, reaching $8.16 billion in 2022-23. India exports $ 4.1 billion worth of products that include pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, textiles, and machinery, while Canada&rsquo;s exports to India ($4.06 billion) include pulses, timber, pulp and paper, and mining products. Last year, Canada exported $11.6 billion worth of goods and services to India. According to Statistics Canada, this was less than third of the exports to China.

Vivek Dehejia, an Economics Professor at Ottawa's Carleton University told Bloomberg that the feud between the two countries might not affect the trade much but might have chilling effects on investment flow. As per Statistics Canada data, the investments between the two nations rose to $26.8 billion in 2022.
<h2>Free Trade Agreement</h2>
The Free Trade Agreement that began between the two countries after over a decade has come to a halt now. An Indian senior government official has told Mint that the negotiations will resume once the diplomatic tensions are resolved.
&ldquo;India has shown its resentment against certain political developments in Canada and, therefore, for the time being, till these political issues are settled, we have paused negotiations," the official told Mint. &ldquo;The moment the political issues are sorted out, the talks will resume. So, it is only a pause."
As part of the negotiation process over half a dozen rounds of talks have already been held between the countries. In March 2022, the two countries re-launched negotiations for an interim agreement&mdash;Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA). In such agreements, two countries significantly reduce or eliminate duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them. Norms are also liberalized to promote trade in services to attract investments.
<h2>Canadian Pension Funds</h2>
Several of Canada's largest pension funds invest largely in India. The funds have increased their focus on India recently to diversify their Asia exposure amid rising geopolitical tensions with China.
Canadian Pension Funds had invested over $ 45 billion in India by the end of 2022, making it the fourth-largest recipient of Canadian FDI in the world. Tens of billions of dollars are pushed into Indian companies and projects that include renewable energy, infrastructure and banks.
Concerns have been growing that the fresh tensions in the India-Canada relationship will see some outflow as Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the largest pension manager in Canada, has significant holdings in some of the Indian companies.
Canada Pension Plan Investment Board that had $575-billion fund has invested more than $21 billion in India as of last September. This fund holds investments in Indian companies including banking, transportation logistics, e-commerce and other sectors; invests in the country through private equity funds; and owns stakes in office and industrial real estate. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board also has an office in Mumbai
Similarly, Ontario Teachers&rsquo; Pension Plan also opened an office in Mumbai in a push to get access to more investment opportunities and build long-term relationships in the country a year ago.
Meanwhile, the shares of companies with investments from Canada pension funds fell in morning trade on September 21. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board's portfolio stocks including Kotak Mahindra Bank, Zomato, Nykaa and Indus Towers fell as much as 1.32% during the intraday trade on Thursday.
<h2>Brands face the Heat</h2>
Major Canadian brands and celebrities are facing the heat as the feud flares. Canada-based companies who have a presence in India, such as McCain, which makes ready-to-cook frozen foods, and cafe chain Tim Hortons are getting trolled and facing boycott calls on social media.
Meanwhile, BookMyShow has cancelled Canada-based singer and rapper Shubhneet Singh's tour on Wednesday. &nbsp;The online booking company has said that the refund will be reflected within 7-10 business days.
"Singer Shubhneet Singh's Still Rollin Tour for India stands cancelled. To that end, BookMyShow has initiated a complete refund of the ticket amount for all consumers. The refund will be reflected within 7-10 working days in the customer's source account of the original transaction", the company posted in X.
<h2>Education Sector ties</h2>
Apart from the trade partnership, India also plays a huge role in Canada's education sector. India by far is the largest source of foreign students attending Canada&rsquo;s colleges and universities. There are over 200 educational partnerships between Indian and Canadian institutions. In addition, over 3,19,000 Indian students are enrolled in Canadian institutions, making them the largest international student cohort in Canada, according to GTRI. According to the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), Indian students contributed $ 4.9 billion to the Canadian economy in 2021.
<h2>India Suspends Visa</h2>
India has now suspended Visa for all Canadian citizens. BLS International, the vendor that runs the visa application centres in Canada posted on their website that services have been suspended from September 21 due to operational reasons till further notice.
<h2>Global Response</h2>
Unlike previous instances where Canada received immediate support from Western countries during geopolitical tensions, the current situation, involving India, has seen a lack of a receptive audience among these nations. They now view India as a crucial counterbalance to China's geopolitical influence.

The Canadian government rejected the warning, with Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc saying that "Canada is a safe country".
India's advisory urged citizens to "exercise utmost caution" in view of &ldquo;growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada&rdquo;.
The warning was issued after Canada asked its citizens in India to "observe a high degree of caution".
Earlier, India expelled a top Canadian diplomat following a similar move by Ottawa.
The tensions rose after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau suggested the possibility of the Indian government's involvement in the killing of Nijjar.

Akal Takht has asked the Centre to clarify its position on Canada's allegations of involvement in Nijjar's murder.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on Wednesday asked the Union government to clarify its position on Canada&rsquo;s allegations regarding the murder of a Khalistani leader and said the accusations reminded the Sikhs of Operation Blue Star and the 1984 riots.
In a video message, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, called the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&rsquo;s allegations &ldquo;sensational news&rdquo;.
Canada and India have expelled a senior diplomat each after Trudeau alleged the involvement of &ldquo;agents of the Indian government&rdquo; in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey in June. The claims were rejected by India as &ldquo;absurd&rdquo; and &ldquo;motivated&rdquo;.
&ldquo;This has left the Sikhs living across the world shaken and has reminded them of Operation Blue Star, the 1984 genocide of Sikhs (anti-Sikh riots) and the killing of Sikh youth in Punjab. It has reopened the old wounds,&rdquo; said Singh.
&ldquo;What could be worse than this if Indian agencies were involved in the murder of Nijjar,&rdquo; said the Jathedar.
The Union government should clarify its position on the accusations levelled by the Canadian PM in Parliament, he further said.
The army had carried out Operation Blue Star in June 1984 to flush out hiding militants from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.
The Jathedar&rsquo;s remarks came a day after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee said although the Indian government trashed the Canadian government&rsquo;s accusations and also expelled a Canadian diplomat, the matter is very serious and will affect Sikhs at the global level.&nbsp;
