Calling the pitch difficult to bat on, match referee Chris Broad said that the ball bounced alarmingly throughout the match.&nbsp;

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday rated the Newlands pitch for the second Test between India and South Africa as "unsatisfactory" after it ended inside five sessions.
India defeated the hosts by seven wickets in the match, which turned out to be the shortest-ever in the history of Test cricket. The victory allowed India to draw the two-match series 1-1.
The decision was made under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process. Only 642 balls could be bowled in the match.
"The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots," said Chris Broad, the match referee for the Test, in his report submitted to the ICC.
"Several batters were hit on the gloves and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce," Broad further wrote.
Subsequently, the Newlands was awarded one demerit point. One demerit point is awarded to venues whose pitches and outfields are rated by the match referee as unsatisfactory.
Cricket South Africa have 14 days to appeal against the sanction.
If a venue reaches six demerit points, it is suspended from hosting any international cricket for 12 months. The penalty is 24 months in case of 12 demerit points.
These points remain active for a rolling five-year period.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was exceptionally vocal in his criticism of the Newlands surface.
"We saw what happened in this match, how the pitch played. I don't mind playing on pitches like this. As long as everyone keeps their mouth shut in India and don't talk too much about Indian pitches," Rohit had told reporters in his post-match press meet.
"Because you come to Test cricket to challenge yourself. Yes, it is dangerous. It is challenging. So, and when people come to India, it is again pretty challenging as well.
If the pitch starts turning (in India), people start talking about 'Puff of dust! Puff of dust!' There's so much crack here (Newlands) on the pitch," he added.
Even South African coach Shukri Conrad was citical of the Cape Town track.
"I don't know what people want me to say. You only need to look at the scores. 1.5-day Test match! You need to look at how they chased 80 (79). It's a sad state when you need more luck than skill. All the ethics and values of Test cricket go out the window," Conrad had said.
However, all of it would not take any sheen out of an Indian victory on which pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah came up with splendid spells.
Siraj's six for 15 skittled South Africa for 55 in their first innings, while India managed a 98-run lead on the back of their 153.
A brilliant counter-attacking hundred from Aiden Markram proved inadequate in the third innings as India were set a target of 79. Bumrah took six for 61 in the second Proteas innings.

India captain Rohit Sharma urged the ICC match referees to take a more &ldquo;neutral&rdquo; approach on rating pitches outside the Indian sub-continent after leading his team to victory in the shortest-ever Test match on a bouncy Newlands track.

For Indian captain, who carried a bright red swelling on his right bicep after being hit by a mean bouncer, said, he is all for spicy tracks overseas but only if people don&rsquo;t take a hypocritical approach when the pitch starts offering turn from the first hour on day one.
&ldquo;We all saw what happened in this Test and how the pitch played. I honestly don&rsquo;t mind playing on pitches like these. As long as everyone keeps their mouth shut when they come to India.

He believes that it is high time that people start realising that every country has its character as far as pitches are concerned.
&ldquo;When you&rsquo;re here to play Test cricket, you talk about Test cricket as the ultimate prize and pinnacle, and then you should stand by it.
"You should come and face it. In India, on day one the pitch starts turning, and they keep talking about of &lsquo;puff of dust, puff of dust&rsquo;. Here there were cracks,&rdquo; the skipper didn&rsquo;t seem one bit amused.
Former England opener Chris Broad was the ICC match referee for the two-Test series and Rohit believes that the global body&rsquo;s empanelled referees should be &ldquo;neutral&rdquo;.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s important to stay neutral, especially the match referees. Some of the match referees need to keep their eyes on how they rate pitches,&rdquo; the skipper was unusually aggressive.
ICC match referee Andy Pycroft's &ldquo;average&rdquo; rating for the pitch used for the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad also did not go down well with Rohit and Co.
&ldquo;I still can&rsquo;t believe the World Cup final pitch was rated &lsquo;below average&rsquo; (average actually). How can that be a poor pitch?&rdquo; he asked. &ldquo;The ICC and the referees need to start looking into it. Rate pitches based on how they see it and not based on countries (hosting). I am all for pitches like these (like the one at Newlands).
"We pride ourselves playing on pitches like these, all I want to say is be neutral." The amount of mistrust for some of the select match officials was evident when Rohit sarcastically said that he would love to know about the parameters match referees use to rate pitches.
&ldquo;I would like to see how the pitch has been rated. I want to see it now. I want to see the chart, and how they rate pitches. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Cape Town, and Centurion, all are different. Pitches deteriorate fast, overhead conditions are different.
&ldquo;If the ball seams from ball one, that&rsquo;s okay, but if the ball starts turning&hellip;. If the ball starts turning, they don&rsquo;t like it. If you want the ball only to seam and not turn, it&rsquo;s wrong,&rdquo; Rohit called out the critics of rank turners.
&ldquo;I have seen enough of cricket now. I have seen enough of how these match referees look into these ratings, I have no issues with how they want to note, they have to be neutral,&rdquo; he kept the ball straight in ICC&rsquo;s court.

Jasprit Bumrah lacked support from the other end as there was no reason to concede 400 plus runs on a bowling-friendly track where South African speedsters showed how to go about the job, dejected Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said on Thursday.
India lost the opening Test inside three days by an innings and 32 runs after scoring 245 and 131 in the two innings, but the game-changer certainly was being taken for 408 runs by South Africa in their first innings.
Save Bumrah, who took four wickets, and to an extent, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna got past their lives.
"This was not a 400-run wicket, and we gave up too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happened. One can&rsquo;t depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah); the other three pacers also needed to perform their roles; we could learn from how South Africa bowled," Rohit said after the match.
He admitted that although there wasn't a lack of effort, Bumrah couldn&rsquo;t alone keep the pressure on Proteas batters.
"Bumrah bowled well, and we all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support, which he didn&rsquo;t get. That happens. All three tried hard, bending their backs, but it didn&rsquo;t happen the way we wanted it to. But games like these teach you a lot as to what you want to do as a bowling unit,&rdquo; the skipper observed.
Young Prasidh, who has just had 12 first-class matches under his belt, couldn&rsquo;t get the measure of bounce and carry at Supersport Park and went for 93 runs in 20 overs on his Test debut.
The skipper conceded that Prasidh is a bit undercooked but also insisted that his team would show faith in him.
"Of course, he is a little bit inexperienced. He has got the tools to come out here and play the game. Obviously, if I look at the bowlers that we have back in India, some of them are injured and some are not available, so we tried picking guys who are available based on conditions,&rdquo; he reasoned.
"I completely agree that he (Krishna) hasn&rsquo;t played a lot of (red ball) cricket, but there are three guys in their team who haven&rsquo;t played a lot of (red ball) cricket, but they showed what is required.
"More than what&rsquo;s there in the legs, I think it&rsquo;s in the mind. How you treat your mind and how you play the game are more important. If you think that, oh, I haven't played a lot of Tests or FC cricket, then it&rsquo;s not going to help,&rdquo; the skipper was clear.
"When you get an opportunity, you should be grateful and come out and do the job for the team. Obviously, it didn&rsquo;t work out well for him, and playing your first game, we all would have been nervous, and he would have been nervous as well.
"These things happen; the guy has a game to excel at, but we will back him, and he has a great attitude about his game, which holds us in good stead going forward." Batters need to devise their own game plan. Each and every batter has a unique technique, and it is imperative that when they come to challenging assignments like South Africa, they have a customised game plan, Rohit said, citing KL Rahul&rsquo;s example.
"Look at what KL Rahul did in the first inning. It is a perfect example of showing intent as well as respecting the conditions. At the end of the day, he scored at a strike rate of 70, and he put the bad balls away. That is what we talk about intent." While he didn&rsquo;t take names, he certainly wasn't amused by the manner in which Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill tackled conditions.
"We can&rsquo;t just go and swing our bats. That&rsquo;s not the condition for doing that. You got to understand that there is a thin line between showing that intent and discipline as well," Rohit said.
"Every individual is different, and we try talking to every individual in the way they want to play and keeping conditions in mind about what they can do. It&rsquo;s a mixture of everything intent, a little bit of discipline and you can&rsquo;t just go with one mindset in these conditions."

During India's first innings, Bavuma hurt his left hamstring trying to chase the ball to the boundary. Elgar captained the game as he left with a member of the South African team's support staff and didn't come back.
"Temba is not in a great physical state. He was ready to bat at every turn. We kept monitoring it. Certain things are tactical. We felt the potential risk&acirc;&euro;&aelig; there is a potential risk he could aggravate. He will have it assessed in two weeks. He is definitely out for Cape Town," South Africa's coach said.
Zubayr Hamza will join the squad, the coach added.
Elgar to lead South Africa in his farewell Test
Dean Elgar, who stood in as captain in the Centurion Test, is set to lead the side in what will be his farewell Test in Cape Town. Elgar, who hit a match-winning 185 in the series opener, will hang up his boots at the end of the series.
South Africa takes series lead
Virat Kohli scored a fifty but India failed to put up a fight with the bat to go down by an innings and 32 runs against South Africa in the opening Test here on Thursday.
India were bundled out for 131 in 34.1 overs in their second innings on the third day after they dismissed South Africa for 408 in 108.4 overs.
The visitors had scored 245 in the first innings.

South Africa has always dominated every opponent in Tests at home, but the Indian team has the best chance to create history after dominant performances across formats in 2023. Both teams have faced each other 42 times in Tests, out of which South Africa won 17 and Team India won 15, whereas 10 games ended in a draw.
Virat Kohli to be a key factor?
When it comes to participating in Test matches in South Africa, Kohli has an incredible record. The Indian star batsman has scored 719 runs at an average of 51.36 in 14 innings. Kohli has amassed two hundred and three fifties in this period. So, fans would be hoping that King Kohli continues his fine form and delivers another triple-figure score in this series.
Rohit Sharma hopes Virat Kohli will continue his fine form in this series, but he will also look forward to contributing with a bat from his position and giving Team India a good start at the top of the order. Also, the return of Jasprit Bumrah will be a major boost for India's bowling lineup.
By all means, this seems to be India's best squad travelling to South Africa in recent years for a Test series, but the question remains the same: whether this team will perform as everyone would expect or will they again succumb under overseas pressure? Well, we will have to wait and watch.

Rahul Dravid's cautious approach ahead of 1st Test
Trying to keep their cards close to the chest, head coach Rahul Dravid and team management didn't want the match to be watched by outsiders as it could give a clearer idea about their strategy to be deployed against the Proteas.
Closed-door training is a common feature among the world's football teams (club and country) where media is only allowed to watch warm-ups and then asked to leave when coaches come to tactical training.
But the Indian cricket team over the years, has at times, uses the 'Closed Door' policy to keep media at bay for the entire duration.
Apart from Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal also got himself a half-century before being retired out to give others a chance to bat.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad's finger injury could warrant a few more days of rest and the Maharashtra right-hander might not be in contention to be selected for the first Test.

Opener Tony de Zorzi slammed a magnificent maiden hundred to complement a superlative effort by his team's bowlers, led by pacer Nandre Burger, as South Africa humbled India by eight wickets in the second ODI to level the three-match series 1-1 in Gqeberha on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old de Zorzi, playing only his fourth ODI, smashed nine fours and six maximums during his counter-attacking 122-ball 119 not out as South Africa completed the 212-run chase with 7.3 overs to spare.
Put in to bat, opener B Sai Sudharsan and skipper KL Rahul made well-compiled fifties but once they were gone, India stumbled their way to 211 all out in 46.2 overs.
On a track offering pace and bounce, Burger (3/30 in 10 overs) bowled his heart out to snap three crucial wickets, while Beuran Hendricks (2/34 in 9.2 overs) and Keshav Maharaj (2/51 in 10 overs) claimed two each.
Defending the below-par total, India needed early wickets but they failed to make any breakthrough as openers de Zorzi and Reeza Hendricks (52) set the platform for the chase with a commanding 130-run stand.
Once Reeza was out, de Zorzi and Rassie van der Dussen (36) added 76 off 83 to take SA to just six short of a victory.
The left-handed de Zorzi then knocked off the winning runs with a six as the hosts reached 215 for 2 in 42.3 overs. They recovered from their eight-wicket hammering in Johannesburg to keep the series alive.
Chasing 212, Hendricks held on to one end, while de Zorzi played his shots as the two batters didn't give much chance to the Indians despite pace duo of Arshdeep Singh (1/28) and Mukesh Kumar (0/46) bowling a good spell in the powerplay.
The only chance that went abegging was when Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to hold a catch of Hendricks off Mukesh in the 5th over.
De Zorzi reached his fifty in the 18th over before completing the century off 109 balls. Reeza, on the other hand, took 71 balls to reach his half century with the help of seven fours.
Arshdeep got rid of Reeza in the 28th over, while debutant Rinku Singh claimed van der Dussen's wicket when SA were just six runs short of the target.
Earlier, Sudharsan and Rahul added 68 runs for the third wicket but South African bowlers forced their way back into the game with regular strikes.
Gaikwad (4) was first to go when he was trapped in front in the second ball by Burger, who bowled 46 dots balls in his 10 overs.
Sudharsan was all class as he played his off drivers and pulls with ease for boundaries as India reached 46 for one in the first powerplay.
However, Tilak Varma (10) was sent back by Burger with a bouncer, bringing skipper Rahul on to the crease.
With the South African seamers bowling in tandem, runs dried up as India could score only 10 runs in next six overs from 11 to 16.
But once spinner Keshav Maharaj (2/51 in 10 overs) was introduced, Sudharsan launched him over deep mid-wicket for the first six.
In the 20th over, Sudharsan dived to complete a risky singles to complete his second successive fifty.
After a watchful start, Rahul produced two pull shots for successive boundaries off Wiaan Mulder (0/19 in 4 overs), before finding the ropes off Lizaad Williams (1/49 in 9 overs) and Aiden Markram (1/28 in 4 overs) to bring up the team 100 in the 24th over.
However, Williams broke the partnership, dismissing Sudharshan, who was a bit surprised by the extra bounce and ended up edging one to Heinrich Klaasen.
Sanju Samson then dragged one on to the stumps off Beuran Hendricks (2/34 in 9.2 overs) as India slipped to 136 for four in 32 overs.
Rahul punished Maharaj for a poor delivery with a sweep shot and then picked up three runs to complete his fifty in 60 balls, while debutant Rinku Singh danced down the pitch to send the spinner over long-on as 16 runs came off the 35th over.
Rahul then played a ramp shot for a four and just when things were looking up, it all went downhill.
First, Rahul was removed by Burger for his third wicket and then five balls later, Rinku was stumped off Maharaj's bowling as the visitors were suddenly reduced to 169 for six.
Maharaj then accounted for Kuldeep Yadav (1), while Axar Patel (7) holed out at long-off off Markram.
Avesh Khan (9) and Arshdeep Singh (18) then smashed a six each to take India past the 200-run mark.

In the second Twenty20 International, the Proteas chased down a revised 152-run target in Gqeberha. Aiden Markram's South Africa side defeated the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team by five wickets. In the rain-shortened game, the hosts were asked to chase 152 runs in 15 overs, but they reached the target in 13.5 overs, helped along by players like Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram.
The Indian bowlers had a bad outing as they were taken to cleaners and found it difficult to bowl well in the second innings when the conditions were batting-friendly. In his reflections on the defeat against Proteas, India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav said that the hosts batted brilliantly during the run-chase.&nbsp;

Sharing his thoughts about the South African chase during 2nd Innings, the Indian skipper said, "At the halfway stage, I thought it was a par score but they batted beautifully in the first 5-6 overs and took the game away from us. It was the brand of cricket we were talking about, just go out and express ourselves. It was tough with the wet ball, but we would face similar situations in the future and it's a good learning for us. Looking forward to the third T20I."
Chasing 152 in 15 overs, Reeza Hendricks and Matthew Breetzke gave the Proteas batters a blistering start and soon Aiden Markram teamed up with Hendricks to ruin India's hopes of defending the target. The Proteas batters split the workload of the target. The middle of the innings saw three quick wickets to add some spice, but the required rate ensured that the Proteas would always be ahead of the Indians. With seven balls and five wickets remaining, the hosts won the second match of the 3-match T20I series and took a lead of 1-0 as the first match was washed out due to rain.

South Africa shred a pedestrian looking Indian bowing attack to pieces to script a five-wicket win in the second T20 of the three-match series in Gqeberha on Tuesday.
Rinku Singh (68 not out off 39) enhanced his credentials as a finisher with a maiden half-century while skipper Suryakumar Yadav (56 off 36) played in his inimitable way to take India to 180 for seven after being put in to bat.
Set a revised target of 152 in 15 overs due to rain, South Africa rocketed to 67 for one in five overs. They eventually cantered to win in 13.5 overs.
Both Mohammad Siraj and Arshdeep Singh were taken to the cleaners upfront.
The left-arm pacer conceded as many as 24 runs in his opening over in which Reeza Hendricks (49 off 27) smashed him out of the ground with a massive strike over mid-wicket.
Spin was introduced as early as in the third over but to no avail against the rampaging batters of the home team.
After Matthew Breezke (16 off 7) departed, Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram (30 off 17) went on a leather hunt. The Proteas were cruising but loss of three quick wickets gave India an opening.
However, South Africa had too much firepower up their sleeve and eventually got home comfortably.
The third and final T20 will be played in Johannesburg on Thursday. The first T20 in Durban was washed out.
Put in to bat, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Shubman Gill (0) for six runs before Surya led from the front and forged fine partnerships with Tilak Varma (29 off 20) and then Rinku.
Rain arrived at St George's Park with three balls left in the innings and Gerald Coetzee on a hat trick, having got rid of Ravindra Jadeja and Arshdeep Singh. The innings did not resume thereafter.
Playing for the first time in South Africa, Rinku took his time initially before working the field beautifully. His square of the wicket shots stood out in his well paced innings including fours and two straight sixes off Aiden Markram.
Coming in at number three, Varma looked good in the middle before getting caught at deep third man in the sixth over.
What followed was a 70-run stand between Surya and Rinku. Surya played like he usually does, collecting a chunk of his runs behind the wicket.
His three sixes came as he got inside the line of the ball to send the ball over the ropes. Two were in the fine leg region and one over midwicket. It was not the smoothest of starts for India, who lost Jaiswal and Gill in the first two overs.
Jaiswal could not control the cut shot against Marco Jansen to be brilliantly caught by David Miller at backward point.
Varma could have departed in similar fashion two balls later but Miller could not hold on to that sharp chance.
Gill was trapped in front by Lizaad Williams who got the ball to nip back from length. Despite the initial pressure, the Indian batters kept batting aggressively.
