Imran Khan was shifted to Attock jail in Pakistan's Punjab province amid tight security on Saturday after a trial court found the former prime minister guilty of &ldquo;corrupt practices&rdquo; in a corruption case and sentenced him to three years in prison.
Khan, 70, was arrested from his Zaman Park home in Lahore on Saturday shortly after the Islamabad trial court convicted him in the Toshakhana corruption case.
The case alleges that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief &ldquo;deliberately concealed&rdquo; details of the gifts he retained from the Toshakhana, a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept, during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.
Khan has been shifted to Attock Jail in the city of Attock, PTI spokesperson Zulifi Bokhari said.
Police said that Khan was taken to jail amid tight security. &ldquo;Security has been on high alert on the route leading to jail,&rdquo; they said.
It is the same jail where former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was kept after his arrest following the toppling of his government by former president Pervez Musharraf.
Attock is located on the bank of the River Indus, with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province lying on the opposite bank of the historic river. It is also the last major town of Punjab province along the Grand Trunk Road.
Security has been beefed up after Khan's PTI party called for peaceful protests across the country within the ambit of the law and the Constitution.
It also appealed to the Supreme Court to hear its review petition &mdash; filed earlier in the day against the maintainability of the Toshakhana case.
This is for the second time in three months that Khan has been arrested.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on Saturday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court terming the arrest of its chief Imran Khan as "abduction at gunpoint" by the Punjab police.
Petitioner Umair Niazi, PTI additional secretary general, requested the court to take up his petition without any delay and direct the Punjab police and government to produce the former prime minister before it to ensure his safety.
"The government has kept Mr Khan in illegal custody. Imran Khan was attending a meeting at his Zaman Park residence at 12:45 pm today when some 200 policemen barged into the house and abducted him at gunpoint. They are keeping him in illegal custody," the petitioner said, and requested the court to take up the petition today (Saturday) itself and order the authorities to produce him before it.
Niazi alleged the police "kidnapped" Khan without showing him the court order of his conviction in Toshakhana case. Khan has been taken to an undisclosed location, thereby, it is requested to produce him before the LHC, Niazi pleaded before the court.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was on Saturday arrested after he was sentenced to three years in prison in a corruption case in which he is accused of profiting from selling expensive state gifts when he was in power.
Additional Judge Humayun Dilawar of the Islamabad-based district and sessions judge also imposed Rs1, 00,000 fine on Khan, adding that he would be kept in jail for another six months if failed to pay the fine.
"Charges of misdeclaration of assets have been proven against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman," Dilawar said in his judgment.
Khan, 70, was arrested from his residence in Lahore by Islamabad police in coordination with the Punjab police after the court verdict, his family said.
In a brief post on the X platform, his party said: &ldquo;Imran Khan is being moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail.&rdquo; Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's special assistant Attaullah Tarar has confirmed the arrest of Khan. "It will be decided later whether he is to be kept at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi or elsewhere," he said while talking to reporters.
Khan was convicted in the Toshakhana case which was filed last year on the complaint of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which had earlier disqualified him in the same case.

Geo News quoting sources reported that the grand operation may begin once the 24-hour deadline given by the police ends.
Reports said all roads leading towards Zaman Park have been blocked and a heavy contingent of law enforcement has been placed in the area. The Punjab government had given a 24-hour ultimatum to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran to hand over the 'terrorists' who had taken refuge in the former prime minister&rsquo;s home.&nbsp;
The local government has however claimed that it has no intentions of arresting Imran.&nbsp;

Pakistan's top court bars Imran Khan's arrest till May 31

The court granted the government lawyer's request and adjourned the hearing until May 31, the Dawn newspaper reported.

A top Pakistani court here on Wednesday extended until May 31 its order to prevent the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in any case filed against him after May 9.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruling came after the government&rsquo;s lawyer requested more time to provide information about the cases filed against the 70-year-old Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief.
Khan was not present in the court. The court was hearing PTI's plea seeking details of all the cases filed against Khan. Khan's party said the PTI chief was booked in over 100 cases across the country.
In a major relief to Khan, the IHC on Friday granted him protective bail for two weeks in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case and barred the authorities from arresting the former Pakistan prime minister in any case registered anywhere in the country until May 15.
The court verdict had come a day after the Supreme Court termed Khan's dramatic arrest from the IHC premises on May 9 &ldquo;invalid and unlawful&rdquo;.
A triumphant Khan returned to his Lahore home on Saturday after having locked himself in the IHC premises for hours for fear of re-arrest despite being granted bail on Friday.
The IHC on Wednesday also ordered the release of PTI leaders Maleeka Bokhari and Ali Muhammad Khan, declaring their arrest &ldquo;unlawful&rdquo;.
The PTI leaders were arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960 following the violent protests in the country after Khan's arrest.
The arrest of Khan on May 9 by the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers at the IHC premises triggered unrest in Pakistan. For the first time in Pakistan's history, the protesters stormed the army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and also torched a corps commander's house in Lahore.
Police put the death toll in violent clashes to 10 while Khan's party claims 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing by security personnel.
On Monday the top military brass vowed to bring the arsonists, who attacked the civil and military installations, to justice through trial under relevant laws of the country, including the Pakistan Army Act and Official Secrets Act.
Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.&nbsp;

In his first address to the nation on Saturday after his release from the anti-graft body's custody on the apex court's order, Pakistan&rsquo;s ousted prime minister Imran Khan has advised the powerful military to form its own political party for jumping into politics and 'think big' for saving the country from descending into a complete chaos.
Looking furious over the manner the military establishment was bent upon crushing his party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Khan, during his address from his Zaman Park residence at 8 pm, asked the military leadership to review its "anti-PTI policy" for the sake of Pakistan, saying its steps have already brought the country to brink of disaster. You need to ashamed of yourself for calling me hypocrite and anti-Army.&rdquo; He said the ISPR, the media wing of the military, had never said such things (about a politician).
"You have jumped into politics. Why don't you form your own party. Who has given you the right to make such frivolous allegations. Have some shame for saying that no one else harmed the army to the extent that I did, and that you will crush us,&rdquo; Khan said.
During his address, Khan asked whether the Pakistan Army's image was good while he was the prime minister or now? "The people liked the Army then. When an Army chief (former Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa) stabbed me in the back and brought to power Pakistan&rsquo;s most infamous and corrupt criminals, the masses started criticising the Army and it is not because of me but the Army chief&rsquo;s actions that the Army is being targeted and criticised,&rdquo; he said.
Khan further said he is the recipient of the most charity around the globe since people trust him.
"You are saying Imran Khan is lying. I have been given the most charity because they trust me and consider me an honest person. &nbsp;Pakistan&rsquo;s Supreme Court has also declared me honest (Sadiq aur Amin)," he further said.
Khan, who was ousted from power in April last year through a no-confidence motion, further said that the handlers (a reference to the military) and its installed government are the main beneficiaries of the attack on the military installations during a protest after his arrest last Tuesday.
"They have put the entire leadership of PTI in jails and arrested over 3,500 workers and instituted more cases against me after the attack on the state buildings by unknown persons. The government parties do not want the elections because they know they will be completely wiped out. That is why they planned this conspiracy (attack on military installations) and ran away from elections," he said. &nbsp; Khan said such a crackdown had been carried out in East Pakistan which his party is facing today. "Such actions have dire consequences. Although you (the Army) will not listen to me, I advise you to think big. You should see where the country is heading by such actions," he said.
Khan termed the judiciary the only hope for Pakistan, asking the judges to refuse illegal orders from the &lsquo;handlers.&rsquo; He said there has been unprecedented media control by the handlers who had also imposed a ban on social media to curb free speech.
He appealed to the journalists to listen to their conscience and not be controlled by fear being instilled by the military establishment.
Khan expressed fear that senior journalist Imran Riaz Khan who was abducted (by security agencies) might be severely tortured or killed.
He also lambasted the government for the abduction of another senior political analyst Oriya Maqbool Jan. &nbsp; Khan demanded investigation into the protests and vandalism following his arrest by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial so that facts could come to fore.
He suspected that &lsquo;the handlers&rsquo; were also involved in the attack on the state installation to achieve its motive, saying his party has no history of indulging in violence.

Pakistan's top court has asked Imran Khan to approach Islamabad High Court on Friday and added that he has to accept whatever the high court decides.

&nbsp;In a major relief for Imran Khan, Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday declared the former prime minister's arrest "illegal" and ordered his immediate release after he was produced before a bench on its orders.
The order to produce 70-year-old Khan was issued by a three-member bench, comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah.
The bench, which heard Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman's plea against his arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case, expressed anger at the way Khan was taken into custody from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.
The bench had directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to produce Khan by 4:30 pm (local time) when the court would reconvene.
Khan was produced before the court amid tight security. As he entered the courtroom, it was closed, and subsequently, the bench resumed the hearing of the case.
"It is good to see you," Chief Justice Bandial told Khan.
"We believe that Imran Khan's arrest was illegal," the top judge said.
He said that the Islamabad High Court should hear the case on Friday. "You will have to accept whatever the high court decides," the judge added.
Bandial also said that it is every politician's responsibility to ensure law and order.
Earlier in the day, Bandial asked how an individual could be arrested from the court premises. Justice Minallah observed that Khan had indeed entered court premises. "How can anyone be denied the right to justice?&rdquo; he asked.
The court also observed that no one could be arrested from the court without permission of the court's registrar. It observed that the arrest tantamount to denying access to justice without fear and intimation, which was the right of every citizen.
It also said that by entering the premises of a court means surrendering to the court and how a person could be arrested after surrender. &ldquo;If an individual surrendered to the court, then what does arresting them mean?&rdquo; the chief justice said.
Khan&rsquo;s counsel Hamid Khan informed that court that his client had approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking a pre-arrest bail but was arrested by paramilitary Rangers.
"Rangers misbehaved with Imran Khan and arrested him," the lawyer said.
The court also took note of about 90 to 100 Rangers personnel entering the court to arrest Khan. &ldquo;What dignity remains of the court if 90 people entered its premises? How can any individual be arrested from court premises?&rdquo; the chief Justice asked.
Chief Justice Bandial also at point observed that the National Accountability Bureau had committed &ldquo;contempt of court&rdquo;. &ldquo;They should have taken permission from the court&rsquo;s registrar before the arrest. Court staffers were also subjected to abuse,&rdquo; he said.
Khan was arrested on Tuesday from the Islamabad High Court and an accountability court on Wednesday handed him over to the National Accountability Bureau for eight days in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case.
The former premier on Wednesday approached the apex court to set aside the warrants of NAB of May 1 for his arrest and to challenge the Islamabad High Court&rsquo;s decision to declare the arrest &ldquo;unlawful&rdquo;.

The Pakistan army runs soap factories, deals in real estate and is therefore a military enterprise that since the formation of the country has been impossible for the elected governments to reign in. &nbsp;
But before we tell you how the Pakistan army became a political and an economic enterprise, let&rsquo;s first understand why the army in India continues to remain apolitical.&nbsp;
In his book, Army and Nation: The Military and Indian Democracy Since Independence, Steven Wilkinson credited the Nehru-era for what he called &lsquo;coup-proofing&rsquo; the Indian Army. India&rsquo;s first prime minister through a series of budget cuts, replacing the office of commander-in-chief with separate army, navy and air force chiefs, placing officers below civil servants, disallowing them from making speeches and keeping senior officers under surveillance ensured the army remained apolitical. By the 1970s, the process of subordinating the Indian armed forces to civilian authority was complete.
Compare this to Pakistan. By 1977, Islamabad had witnessed two military coups and five more were in the offing. To further assert this point, consider this: in 2013, for the first time in Pakistan&rsquo;s history, a democratic elected government completed its term and transferred power to another elected government.
So why is the all-powerful Pakistan army silent when chaos is ruling on the street?&nbsp;
The ham-handed arrest of Imran from the premises of the Islamabad High Court may only serve to enhance his status among his followers as a fighter for a democratic Pakistan. That, in turn, means there are no easy exits from this spiralling new crisis for any of the key actors in this saga. Imran&rsquo;s arrest is seen as an action not by the civilian government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif but of the Pakistan Army.
Even if the Army has shot itself in the foot, it is unlikely that such protests will lead to a change of mind at the top. Having taken this step, it would be surprising if Army Chief General Asim Munir backs down against his adversary.
Imran&rsquo;s arrest was foretold. As his popularity soared since his ouster from office, disqualification via conviction was the only way to keep him out of the election &ndash; he has been booked reportedly in 140 cases ranging from murder to profiting from the sale of state gifts. The Shehbaz Sharif-led government, formed by a coalition of parties after Imran&rsquo;s ouster and the Army is united in this effort.
The ruling coalition fears an election rout at Imran&rsquo;s hands. And if he is elected, Gen Munir, whose appointment as army chief came through after the government put off his retirement date, would be the first casualty.&nbsp;
While there appears to be some discord within the Army over Munir&rsquo;s appointment and divisions over Imran&rsquo;s ouster, many at the top view him as a direct threat to its predominant position in Pakistan.

An anti-corruption court in Pakistan on Wednesday sent former prime minister Imran Khan on an eight-day physical remand to the National Accountability Bureau while a sessions court here indicted him in a separate graft case.
The 70-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was taken into custody by the paramilitary Rangers on Tuesday on the orders of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) by barging into a room of the Islamabad High Court.
Khan was produced in the Anti-Accountability Court No. 1 presided by judge Muhammad Bashir, the same judge who had convicted former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam in a corruption case of having properties in London. Maryam was later on set free in the case by the Islamabad High Court. However, Sharif's case is still pending.

Khan was present in the District and Sessions Court where judge Humayun Dilawar conducted the hearing.

A Pakistani court on Wednesday indicted Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case, in fresh trouble for the former prime minister who was arrested by paramilitary Rangers a day earlier from the Islamabad High Court premises.
Khan, 70, has been in the dock for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch which he received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.
Established in 1974, the Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries.
On Wednesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman was indicted in the Toshakhana case.
Khan was present in the District and Sessions Court where judge Humayun Dilawar conducted the hearing.
The case was filed last year by the Election Commission of Pakistan and Khan had skipped several hearings in the past months.

“The exact numbers of troops/assets, date and area of deployment will be worked out by the provincial government in consultation with MO Dte, GHQ,” an interior ministry notification said.

Nearly 1000 protesters have been arrested by police in Pakistan's Punjab amid the violence across the country over former PM Imran Khan's arrest, AFP reported citing police officials.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Police teams arrested 945 lawbreakers and miscreants from across the province,&rdquo; AFP quoted the police as saying. It added that 130 officers and officials were injured in the violence that broke out after the ex-PM&rsquo;s arrest a day earlier.
Meanwhile, Army personnel have been deployed in Punjab province to maintain law and order situation.
&ldquo;The exact numbers of troops/assets, date and area of deployment will be worked out by the provincial government in consultation with MO Dte, GHQ,&rdquo; an interior ministry notification said.
