Shikhar Dhawan reckons that the game of cricket has undergone a lot of change this year but he does not see mindboggling scores being made in the upcoming T20 World Cup like the IPL in the absence 'impact player' option during the showpiece.
The impact player rule which allows teams to play an extra batter or a bowler is believed to have bolstered the number of high scores being recorded in this IPL, with totals in excess of 250 being recorded as many as eight times.
The bowlers' misery reignited the debate of creating a balance between the bat and the ball since wickets and conditions in IPL generally tend to favour batters.
"I feel as if the game itself has changed this year, which is why scores of 250 are being put on. The mindset has certainly changed," Dhawan told PTI.
"But when you go into the World Cup which won&rsquo;t have the impact player rule, the impact of it would be seen definitely. That is a differentiator and how we adapt to the conditions is what will matter the most.
"The mindset has changed after the introduction of the impact player. When a batter in the middle knows that there is batting available till number 8 and 9, he is going to take the aggressive route which is why so many high scores are being made," the aggressive Indian opener, who will host a TV show 'Dhawan Karenge' on Jio Cinema, said.
He said India have a strong squad at their disposal for the T20 World Cup in Americas and that the players enjoy their game under Rohit Sharma.
"All bases have been covered. The team looks balanced and India have got a very good chance (of winning the title),&rdquo; he said.
"Rohit is a seasoned captain and the boys are very happy and comfortable around him. We have got a very good and experienced side with amazing youngsters and we have a very good chance to win the World Cup," Dhawan added.
Dhawan acknowledged Punjab Kings had a disappointing run in IPL this year, with the team failing to make the playoffs for the 10th year in a row.
The experienced left-handed batter entered IPL as Punjab Kings' skipper but was sidelined due to a shoulder injury he suffered in early April.
Dhawan said losing experienced players to injuries can also impact teams heavily.
"I could play only five matches this year after which I got injured. We had won two matches until then. I stayed with the team and did my rehab, which is something I am doing even now. But the injury is serious and I will be out of action.
"Even the team could not do well. Whenever experienced players get injured, it impacts the team. But the boys gave their everything and it was unfortunate it did not go our way," Dhawan said.

The "Impact Player" rule has been a hot topic of discussion in the ongoing IPL season. While it has faced sharp criticism, notable figures like former India coach Ravi Shastri has come out in support of the rule while speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin, asserting that it leads to more exciting and close finishes.
Implemented in the previous season, the Impact Player rule has sparked debates among experts and players this edition. Some argue that the rule might render all-rounders obsolete. However, Shastri believes that such skepticism is common with any new rule. "When any new rule comes in, there will be people who will try to justify why that's not right," Shastri said.
He further explained that with time, as people observe high scores and individual performances benefiting from the rule, their perspectives might change. Shastri emphasized the necessity for the game to evolve, saying, "The Impact Player (rule) is good. You have to evolve with the times. It happens in other sports as well. It's got tighter finishes."
On Ashwin's YouTube channel, Shastri elaborated on the positive effects of the rule, highlighting the increased number of tight finishes in last year's IPL as evidence of its impact. "I think it's a good rule. You saw the number of tight finishes we had in last year's IPL. So, it has made a big difference," he noted.
Adding to the conversation, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently clarified that the Impact Player rule is not set in stone. He described it as a test case, slowly implemented to assess its benefits. One of the significant advantages, according to Shah, is that it provides opportunities for two additional Indian players in each game, which he considers crucial.
"We will consult with the players, franchises, broadcasters (and take a call). This is not permanent, (but) I am not saying that it will go. (We'll see) if it's making the game more competitive or not. Even then, if a player feels that this is not right, then we will talk to them. But no one has told us anything yet. So, it will be decided after the World Cup," Shah explained.
However, not everyone is in favor of the rule. India skipper Rohit Sharma, along with Delhi Capitals' Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar, have expressed their displeasure. Rohit Sharma articulated his concerns about the rule's potential impact on the development of all-rounders. "I genuinely feel it is going to hold back the development of all-rounders because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12," Rohit had said a couple of weeks back.
He added, "So, I am not a big fan of the Impact Player rule because you are taking so much from the game just to make it a little more entertaining for the people around you."

The 'Impact Player' enthusiasts seem to be reducing every passing day. From a welcome start in 2023 to fewer takers in the following IPL season, the rule has become hugely unpopular among players.&nbsp; The regulation has surely helped teams, particularly on the flatter wickets of the 2024 edition with several record-breaking totals already amassed this year. But cricketers, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma have come out with strong criticism about how the rule is harming the sport.&nbsp; What is the 'Impact Player' (IP) rule?&nbsp; Apart from the usual Playing XI, teams have the option of naming five substitutes. These subs can be introduced in the game anytime during the innings, like the start or an end of an over, fall of a wicket or upon a batter's retirement.&nbsp; Only one subsitution is allowed per team in each match.&nbsp; What does the IP rule do? Teams assess the situation, starting with the toss to bring in the most impactful player. For fielding teams, an additional bowler might scalp a much needed wicket. But most of the benefit has been reaped by batting sides.&nbsp; IPL 2024 has seen twelve 200+ scores so far, a clear indication about the fearlessness with which batters are taking to the field as a twelfth 'impact' player waits in the wings.&nbsp; How has this been detrimental? The 'need of the hour' idea behind this rule negatively impacts all-rounders, who would usually be the invisible twelfth person, with their additional skills of either batting or bowling.&nbsp; The 'IP' rule does not specify the need to use specialist bowlers or batters however, that is the route teams end up taking.&nbsp; In consequence, the development of all-rounders suffers.&nbsp; This issue was first highlighted by Team India captain Rohit Sharma during a podcast.&nbsp; 'I'm not a big fan... It's going to hold back all-rounders. Cricket is played by 11, not 12. You are taking out so much from game to make it entertaining for people around. I feel guys like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar aren't getting to bowl.'&nbsp; He added that the rule diminishes the importance of a balanced squad and learning to adapt to situations with the existing players.&nbsp; Echoing the captain's thoughts was seasoned player Axar Patel, 'As an all-rounder, I feel that an all-rounder's role is in danger with the Impact Player rule. Every team is looking to play either a pure batter or a pure bowler as the Impact Player, and the all-rounders are not being used.'&nbsp; Patel added, 'With the Impact Player, every team goes into the match thinking they have six batters or bowlers, depending on if they are batting or bowing. This also creates a lot of confusion sometimes.'&nbsp; For additional context, well-known all-rounders like Rachin Ravindra, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Mahipal Lomror and Washington Sundar have collectively bowled 14 overs halfway through the 2024 season.&nbsp; Will this rule be revised?&nbsp; On April 20, The Telegraph quoted IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal as saying, 'Now that such an observation has been made, we will definitely look into it. We will discuss with all parties involved and then take a call.'&nbsp; The statement added that IPL organisers are 'open to any discussion once the season gets over... nothing is cast in stone about its implementation'.&nbsp;
