During the ICC World Cup 2023 that was hosted in India last month, local businesses including restaurants and hotels registered a 400% increase in spending by foreign tourists. Mastercard Economics Institute report, titled "ICC Cricket World Cup: A boost to India's economy", stated: "Australia had a better game on the day of the finals and took home the trophy. The other winner was the Indian economy."
<h3>Boost to Indian economy</h3>
The report mentioned that quick-service restaurants in cities which hosted the World Cup matches saw an increase of over 300% in spending by foreign tourists. The spending during three key matches including India vs Pakistan, India vs England and the final clash between India and Australia saw big business compared to other matches.

The report also read that the multiplier impact of the ICC World Cup on the Indian economy has been an all-round win.
"From small businesses, local eateries, mom-and-pop stores, budget hotels to luxury accommodations and fine-dining restaurants &mdash; the multiplier impact of the ICC World Cup on the Indian economy has been an all-round win, underscoring the importance of sporting and other major cultural events on local and national economies", the report said.
<h3>Mastercard Economics Institute report</h3>
For the report, Mastercard surveyed tourists from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, South Africa, the UAE and Singapore.
"This report by the Mastercard Economics Institute examines that impact by evaluating the surge in cross-border and domestic spending by fans on travel, food, and hotels. During some of the key matches featuring team India, in-person restaurant spends increased by a whopping 400 per cent", said Gautam Aggarwal, division president of South Asia at Mastercard

More than 6,000 security personnel will be deployed in Ahmedabad city and the Narendra Modi stadium during the World Cup final between India and Australia on November 19.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Deputy PM Richard Marles will be among the key personalities who are expected to attend the final in the Motera.
Of these 6,000 personnel, nearly 3,000 will be stationed inside the stadium, while others will be deployed to guard other key locations, such as hotels where players and other dignitaries are staying.

Asked if the police have received any inputs regarding a possible threat, Ahmedabad police chief Malik said the media should not highlight such threats issued by unknown persons sitting outside India.

After two back-to-back wins, India is riding on high confidence and is ready to face traditional rival Pakistan. India began their World Cup campaign with a victory over Australia, while Pakistan has two victories in two matches to build momentum.
The golden ticket holders like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth are also expected to be present to watch the game.
A lot of VIPs are expected to be coming for the India vs Pakistan game. Arijit Singh&rsquo;s event will start at 12:40 PM on the day and will end by 1:10 PM. Kids will be acting as mascots for the game and will escort teams to the ground.

The ongoing ICC Men&rsquo;s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India has ignited a hiring frenzy across various sectors, with e-commerce firms, food delivery platforms, and hospitality companies leading the charge.
Staffing firm TeamLease anticipates that over 100,000 temporary jobs will be created as businesses gear up for increased consumption during the tournament, which features 48 matches and runs until November 19.
&ldquo;Large events like the World Cup lead to hiring in both core and ancillary sectors," explained Vijay Sivaram, CEO of Quess Staffing. Hospitality, restaurants, and cab-sharing platforms have all witnessed a spike in hiring, as well as food delivery, quick commerce, alcohol, soft drinks, media, and online gaming companies. Analysts at Jefferies predict a boost in consumption, prompting companies to roll out World Cup-specific promotions on match days.
Quick commerce firm Zepto and same-day delivery platform Zippee have increased their workforce to manage the expected surge in demand. However, the hiring spree has presented challenges, especially in southern Indian cities, where the tournament coincides with the festive season and ongoing promotional offers by large e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.
Despite these hurdles, companies are actively recruiting to capitalize on the consumption uptick driven by the World Cup, showcasing the dynamic economic impact of major sporting events.
&ldquo;This will be led by food aggregators for sure. Secondly, in cities where matches are taking place, hospitality as a whole will see a spike in demand for staff. On all match days nationally, you will see a spike in food ordering; that aside, a lot of food establishments are using this World Cup to attract footfalls at their restaurants, and that will lead to additional hiring too. In fact, we expect a spike in mobility services too with a demand for drivers etc. as people move around to watch the matches," said Balasubramanian A., Vice President and business Head at TeamLease Services.
Despite the challenges, the proactive approach of businesses highlights the transformative economic influence of major sporting events, not only on the field but also in the job market, as companies scramble to meet the demands of enthusiastic consumers during this thrilling cricket season. The ICC World Cup which begins today 5th October and runs through mid-November, guarantees sponsors more than a billion viewers across the world from Europe to Oceania. Bloomberg quoted the chief economist at Bank of Baroda Madan Sabnavis said that it's the consumers in the world's most populous nation who are the biggest prize, particularly for foreign brands.

<h3>ICC World Cup 2023: Advertisement Spending</h3>
A partner in Deloitte India Jehil Thakkar told Bloomberg that brands are likely to spend about ₹ 2,000 crore ($240 million) in advertisement spots on streaming platforms during the tournament. He further added that a 10-second advertising slot during matches costs up to ₹ 30 lakh, a 40% increase compared to the last World Cup in 2019.
The brands that are spending for airtime during the World Cup includes, Coca-Cola Co., Google Pay and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. Meanwhile, ICC's &nbsp;list of official partners includes Saudi Aramco, Emirates and Nissan Motor Co.
Thakkar also told Bloomberg that education technology and online betting companies that were once major sponsors has cut back on spending amid debt and regulatory concerns. The trend has now shifted back to more traditional sectors such as consumer goods, automobiles and phones.
<h3>Cricket Sponsorship in India</h3>
Jefferies in a report mentioned that Cricket which is by far the favourite sport in India attracts more than $1.5 billion in sponsorship and media spend a year. Cricket represents 85% of all such sports-related spending.
"Cricket has less fanfare globally as compared to other sports like soccer," Sabnavis told Bloomberg, "but the kind of frenzy you witness in India around cricket is not present elsewhere."
India is also growing as a favourite consumer market for global firms that are looking for growth amid an economic slowdown in China and its geopolitical tensions with Western economies. As per some estimates, India is expected to drive a fifth of world economic expansion in the next decade and become a $10 trillion economy by 2035.
<h3>ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Boost to Indian economy</h3>
A Jefferies analyst &nbsp;Prateek Kumar told Bloomberg that the Indian economy will also be getting a major boost in household spending during the World Cup, as fans travel for matches, watch them in venues like restaurants and bars or order takeout at home. Hotel fares have increased by 150% on average on days India is scheduled to play.
India's festive season has also instilled hope in the brands looking to capture the sub-continent's market. This, as the World Cup is coinciding with India's festive season, which runs from September to January.
"The Cricket World Cup is the biggest sporting event of the year for fans across the country," Yannick Colaco, co-founder of FanCode, the International Cricket Council's official retail partner in India for the event told Bloomberg.
"No other sports tournament captures the hearts and minds of Indian fans like a World Cup. That's why you see brands and companies making a beeline to be associated with the tournament."

A total of 48 World Cup matches will be held across 10 venues.
India will be playing their matches in Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Dharamsala, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
