He asked Australia to stop thinking about pitches in India and just concentrate on their job.
"The first Test has exposed Australia's weakness against good spin bowling on turning pitches," the former Australian captain wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
"If they can ensure this setback doesn't mean their mental capacity to cope in India is not dented, it will keep them in the series. If they waver, they are in big trouble," Chappell added.
Spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bamboozled Australia on a typical red-soil wicket as the visitors crumbled to their lowest total in India (91) to suffer an innings defeat inside three days in Nagpur on Saturday.

Pant met with a horrific car accident in December last year and is yet to be discharged from the hospital after undergoing multiple surgeries on his knee and heel.

 Meanwhile, Smith, who was Australia's stand-in captain against the West Indies, said that banning someone for life from leadership is just fundamentally wrong.

 He also expressed that there is also a lack of partnership between players and administrators which is visible as future schedules are decided without any input from international players.
 Notably, many international players had opted out of their central contracts to play in domestic T20 leagues across the globe. While the emergence of South Africa's T20 league and UAE's ILT20 give plenty of options for cricketers with better remunerations.
