According to health experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the early onset of hypertension among children and adolescents is becoming an alarming concern.
<h3>Hypertension among children is alarming</h3>
Dr Sumit Malhotra, Professor Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS, said surveys which are being done in different parts of the country, looked into the hypertension levels, and found that 15 -20 per cent of the children and teenagers aged between 10-19 have hypertension more than what is normal at their age. The doctor also mentioned that one of the critical challenges identified during the survey is the lack of awareness about blood pressure.
Dr Kiran Goswami, Professor, Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS said that hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor, and accounts for most premature deaths in the country, especially in the younger population.
"If you can control your systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 10 millimetres of mercury, you can bring down about 20 per cent early risk of death by cardiovascular deaths. Stroke risks can be reduced by one-third," she said.
The experts said that besides genetic risks, early age tobacco intake, excess weight, physical inactivity, and sedentary lifestyle, are the major risk factors for high BP.

Lead researcher in the study says that dairy foods, especially yoghurt, may be capable of reducing blood pressure. This is because dairy foods contain a range of micronutrients, including calcium, magnesium and potassium, all of which are involved in the regulation of blood pressure.

The study was conducted on 915 community-dwelling adults. Habitual yogurt consumption was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. High blood pressure was defined as being greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg.
This study showed for people with elevated blood pressure, even small amounts of yoghurt&nbsp;were associated with lower blood pressure. And for those who consumed yoghurt regularly, the results were even stronger, with blood pressure readings nearly seven points lower than those who did not consume yoghurt.

Researchers led by the Boston University School of Medicine in the United States conducted a study investigating the link between vascular risk factors and the onset of epilepsy. Researchers used data from the Framingham Heart Study and tracked the health report of 2,986 people who were at least 45 years old. Researchers screened for several risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, smoking habits, BMI and history of stroke to underpin a prominent cause of epilepsy.
The researchers found that hypertension had links to an almost 2-fold higher risk of epilepsy. However, the other risk factors had no links to epilepsy. They also found that every 10 mm Hg change in systolic blood pressure was associated with a 17% higher risk of developing epilepsy.
The study concludes to point that this work is observational, so does not confirm that there is a definite direct link. However, it builds on the knowledge base and highlights the importance of lifestyle, regular exercise, and a low salt intake to control blood pressure as an important way of reducing morbidity.

In the last 30 years, the number of adults, aged 30 to 79 years, living with hypertension has doubled globally.&nbsp;
From around 331 million (33.1 crore) women and 317&nbsp;million&nbsp;(31.7 crore) men in 1990, the number rose to&nbsp;626 million (62.6 crores) women and 652 million (65.2 crores) men by 2019. Most of this increase was observed in low to middle-income countries, informs a study recently published in the journal Lancet.
In India, the prevalence of hypertension, also called high blood pressure,&nbsp;grew&nbsp;from&nbsp;28% in women and 29% in men in 1990 to 32% in women and 38% in men in 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp; The study analysed blood pressure measurements of over 100 million adults across 184 countries.&nbsp;
Even though hypertension is easy to diagnose and treat, nearly half of the people&nbsp;living&nbsp;with high BP were unaware and more than half were not treated, found the study.&nbsp;&nbsp;
As a result,&nbsp;8.5 million&nbsp;(85 lakh)&nbsp;people died of hypertension in 2015. The condition is also a leading risk factor for&nbsp;heart attack, heart failure, other vascular diseases and renal disease.&nbsp;
