The United States unveiled trade restrictions Tuesday on eight companies, including two Chinese firms and several from Russia, alleging human rights violations.

The United States unveiled trade restrictions Tuesday on eight companies, including two Chinese firms and several from Russia, alleging human rights violations.
The China-based companies identified include Zhejiang Uniview Technologies, which US officials accuse of enabling human rights violations such as surveillance of Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups.
The other firm named by the US Commerce Department was Beijing Zhongdun Security Technology Group, which is said to develop and sell products allowing public security authorities to carry out rights violations.
The businesses were added to an "entity list," which requires US companies to have a license before exporting to them.
"Human rights abuses are contrary to the foreign policy interests of the United States," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Estevez in a statement.
Adding these companies to the entity list aims to "ensure that US technology is not used to enable human rights violations and abuses," he added.
A man who answered a call to a cellphone number associated with Beijing Zhongdun hung up after an AFP reporter identified himself.
Calls to two numbers associated with Zhejiang Uniview went unanswered.
The US government and lawmakers in several other Western countries have taken aim at China's treatment of the Uyghur minority in the northwestern Xinjiang region.
Rights groups have said at least one million people, mostly members of Muslim minorities, have been incarcerated in the region and face various abuses -- while Beijing vehemently denies the accusations.
Among other firms targeted on Tuesday were two in Myanmar and two others in Russia over their roles in supplying Myanmar's military with components allowing them to carry out acts like aerial attacks against civilians, the Commerce Department said.
Two other Russian entities were included for providing facial recognition technology to Moscow "to target peaceful protesters, an integral component of Russia's mass surveillance apparatus."

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf leader and Human Rights minister, Shireen Mazari, has alleged that her daughter was abducted by the police and individuals dressed in plain clothes during an overnight raid on August 20, Pakistan's Geo News reported.&nbsp;
In a social media post, Mazari, who was forced to quit politics in the wake of the May 9 violence and has faced multiple arrests since then, alleged that the police forcibly entered her house by breaking down the front door.
They apprehended her daughter without presenting an arrest warrant. Security cameras, a laptop, and mobile phones were also taken away. Strongly condemning the incident, Mazari termed it an act of 'abduction' and 'state fascism.'

Sri Lanka is facing a &ldquo;devastating&rdquo; economic crisis, a UN report has said, noting that &ldquo;impunity&rdquo; for past and present human rights abuses, economic crimes and corruption were the underlying causes for the island nation&rsquo;s collapse.
The report, prepared by the UN Rights High Commissioner Michele Bachelet, was released on Tuesday, also suggested fundamental changes to address the current challenges and to avoid repetition of the human rights violations of the past.
Interestingly, it comes ahead of the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council Session, to be held in Geneva from September 12 to October 7, where a resolution on Sri Lanka is expected to be tabled.
This is also the first time that the top UN body has linked the economic crisis with Sri Lanka&rsquo;s gross human rights violations.
&ldquo;For sustainable improvement, it is vital to recognise and assist Sri Lanka to address the underlying factors, which have contributed to this crisis, including embedded impunity for past and present human rights abuses, economic crimes and corruption,&rdquo; the report said.
The broad-based demands by Sri Lankans from all communities for accountability and democratic reforms presented &ldquo;an important starting point for a new and common vision for the future,&rdquo; it said.
&ldquo;Fundamental changes will be required to address the current challenges and to avoid repetition of the human rights violations of the past,&rdquo; the report said.
Sri Lanka is going through its worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948 which was triggered by a severe paucity of foreign exchange reserves.
Last week, the IMF announced that it will provide Sri Lanka a loan of about USD 2.9 billion over four years under a preliminary agreement to help the bankrupt island nation tide over its worst economic crisis and protect the livelihoods of the people.
The UN report called on the Ranil Wickremesinghe-led government to immediately end the reliance on draconian security laws and crackdowns on peaceful protests, reverse the drift towards militarisation and show renewed commitment to, and deliver on, security sector reform and ending impunity.
In July, Wickremesinghe imposed a state of emergency after his predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country and resigned from his post following massive anti-government protests over the government's mishandling of the economy.
Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said earlier this week that Sri Lanka will oppose a new resolution on its human rights accountability, especially an external investigation mechanism, at the UN Human Rights Council session.
Sabry said Sri Lanka was adopting a policy of engagement on rights accountability bilaterally and multilaterally and was looking for a lasting solution.
A possible draft resolution on Sri Lanka is expected to be presented on September 23.
This would be followed by a vote among the member states on the new draft resolution on October 6.
The UN rights body since 2013 has adopted resolutions calling for rights accountability for war crimes blamed both on the government troops and the LTTE group that ran a violent campaign to create a separate state for the Tamil minority in the north and east regions.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the now ousted former president, at that time ruthlessly ended Sri Lanka's nearly 30-year civil war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) with the death of its supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran in 2009.
The former defence secretary, who stands accused of violating human rights, vehemently denies the charge.
Then-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, the elder brother of Gotabaya, on May 18, 2009 declared the end of the 26-year war in which over 1,00,000 people were killed and millions of Sri Lankans, mainly minority Tamils, displaced as refugees inside the country and abroad.
Another resolution initiated in 2015, co-sponsored by Sri Lanka, called upon the country to establish a credible judicial process with the participation of Commonwealth and other foreign judges, defence lawyers, and authorised prosecutors and investigators.
Sri Lanka, however, consistently opposed the idea.
In a 2021 resolution, the UN rights body rejected the domestic mechanism proposed by the then Gotabaya Rajapaksa government.
The 2021 resolution was adopted with 22 votes for and 11 siding with Sri Lanka, including China.
There were 14 abstentions including India.&nbsp;

India backs UN resolution to recognise human right to clean, healthy environment; raises concern over text

India said that the terms &lsquo;clean&rsquo;, &lsquo;healthy&rsquo; and &lsquo;sustainable&rsquo; remain open to subjective interpretations and that the resolution fails to have a &ldquo;clear reference&rdquo; to the foundational principle of equity in international environmental law.&nbsp;

India has voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that recognises the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right, but dissociated itself from an operative paragraph of the text and voiced its concerns over the procedure and substance of the resolution.
The 193-member General Assembly adopted the resolution on Thursday with 161 votes in favour and abstentions by Belarus, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Syria.
While India voted in favour of the resolution, it voiced its concerns over the procedure and substance of the resolution.
The resolution &ldquo;recognises the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right&rdquo; and "affirms that the promotion of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment requires the full implementation of the multilateral environmental agreements under the principles of international environmental law.&rdquo; &ldquo;India stands ready to support any effort for a better environment and to further international cooperation for environmental protection. In this context, India voted in favour of this resolution,&rdquo; Counsellor in India&rsquo;s Permanent Mission to the UN Ashish Sharma said, delivering the explanation of the vote in the UNGA.
&ldquo;However, considering that our concerns remain outstanding, we are, therefore, constrained to dissociate ourselves with the operative paragraph 1 of the resolution,&rdquo; he said.
The operative paragraph 1 of the resolution reads that the UNGA &ldquo;Recognises the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right.&rdquo; He requested that this statement be included in the official records in the meeting. He asserted that the UNGA resolutions do not in themselves create binding obligations, and it is only through conventions and treaties that State parties commit to a &ldquo;new human right and undertake appropriate obligations for the realisation of such a right.

&ldquo;Further, there is no clear understanding and agreed definition of terms &lsquo;clean&rsquo;, &lsquo;healthy&rsquo; and &lsquo;sustainable&rsquo;. Currently, these terms remain open to subjective interpretations and thereby dilutes the very objective of the recognition proclaimed in the present resolution,&rdquo; Sharma said.
He voiced regret that the text of the resolution fails to have a &ldquo;clear reference&rdquo; to the foundational principle of equity in international environmental law.
Noting that India attaches great importance to the promotion and protection of human rights, including in the context of environment, Sharma said New Delhi had expressed its concerns on the resolution both in terms of procedure and substance.
India had also expressed its concerns clearly and repeatedly, and made constructive proposals to achieve common ground.
&ldquo;We sincerely believe that some of these proposals could have helped in bringing us closer to the consensus.&rdquo; He said India also remains concerned that even after strong support by many member states for the inclusion of preambular paragraph 8 of the Human Rights Council resolution 48/13, which forms the basis of the current resolution, the decision of the core group was otherwise.
&ldquo;It is an important paragraph that reaffirms the importance of international cooperation, on the basis of mutual respect, in full compliance with the principles and purposes of the Charter, with full respect for the sovereignty of States while taking into account national priorities,&rdquo; Sharma said.
Sharma referred to the preambular paragraph 8 of the Human Rights Council resolution that pertained to &lsquo;The human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.&rsquo; He also noted that throughout the negotiations, India engaged constructively with an aim to reach a consensual outcome.
While appreciating the efforts of the core group - Costa Rica, the Maldives, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland - he said India believes that providing more time to discussions could have helped in bridging the differences and addressing the concerns of various delegations.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the adoption of the &ldquo;historic resolution&rdquo;, saying it demonstrates that the member states can come together in &ldquo;our collective fight against the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The international community has given universal recognition to this right and brought us closer to making it a reality for all.&rdquo; He however noted that adoption of the resolution is only the beginning and urged states to make the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment a reality for everyone, everywhere.
"The resolution will help reduce environmental injustices, close protection gaps and empower people, especially those that are in vulnerable situations, including environmental human rights defenders, children, youth, women and indigenous peoples. The resolution will also help states accelerate the implementation of their environmental and human rights obligations and commitments.&rdquo; President of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said in a tweet that the UNGA adopted a historic resolution that &ldquo;recognised for the first time, that everyone, everywhere, has a human right to live in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.&rdquo; Sharma stressed that environmental protection is part of India&rsquo;s cultural values and &ldquo;our traditions have for long stressed the importance of living in harmony with nature.&rdquo; He pointed out that at COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed a one-word movement, LIFE, a mass movement that influences lifestyle for the environment, promoting mindful and deliberate utilisation of resources instead of mindless and destructive consumption.
&ldquo;India is making rapid strides towards inclusive and overall sustainable development. This is being done both at the national level and globally through international partnerships,&rdquo; he said.
He said that India has worked with partners for significant global initiatives for environmental protection that include the International Solar Alliance, the focus on One Sun, One World, One Grid, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and Leadership Group for Industry Transition.&nbsp;

We'll keep working alongside other governments, multilateral organisations, civil society to do so, including next month at the United Kingdom's ministerial to advance religious freedom,” Blinken told media persons at the release of the annual International Religious Freedom report on Thursday.
“At its core, our work is about ensuring that all people have the freedom to pursue the spiritual tradition that most has meaning to their time on earth,” he said, noting that the report documents how religious freedom and the rights of religious minorities are under threat in communities around the world.
“For example, in India, the world's largest democracy and home to a great diversity of faiths, we've seen rising attacks on people and places of worship; in Vietnam, where authorities harassed members of unregistered religious communities; in Nigeria, where several state governments are using anti-defamation and blasphemy laws to punish people for expressing their beliefs,” Blinken said.
China, he said, continues to harass adherents of other religions that it deems out of line with the Chinese Communist Party doctrine, including by destroying Buddhist, Christian, Islamic and Taoist houses of worship and by erecting barriers to employment and housing for Christians, Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists and Falun Gong practitioners.
In Afghanistan, conditions for religious freedom have deteriorated dramatically under the Taliban, particularly as they crack down on the basic rights of women and girls to get an education, to work, to engage in society, often under the banner of religion, he said.
Meanwhile, ISIS-K is conducting increasingly violent attacks against religious minorities, particularly Shia Hazaras, he added.
“In Pakistan, at least 16 individuals accused of blasphemy were sentenced to death by Pakistani courts in 2021 though none of these sentences has yet to be carried out,” Blinken said.

The decision was made in the General Assembly on Thursday, where 193 members voted to accept a resolution by the US. The US claims that civilians were killed by the Russian military while pulling back from the towns near Kyiv.

'If India has chosen any side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence,' India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in the Explanation of Vote after the voting.
Following the resolution, Russia became the second country whose Human rights have been suspended, Libya was the first in 2011.

Amid the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Russia has been suspended from UN Human Rights Council. The decision was made in the General Assembly on Thursday, where 193 members voted to accept a resolution by the US. The US claims that civilians were killed by the Russian military while withdrawing from the towns near Kyiv, Ukraine.
Antony Blinken, US State Secretary trained guns on Russia and said that a&nbsp;'country that is perpetrating gross and systematic violations of human rights should not sit on a body whose job it is to protect those rights'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed those who he said engaged in 'selective interpretation' of human rights and looked at its violation with an eye on political loss and gains.Speaking at the 28th foundation day of the National Human Rights Commission, Modi said similar incidents are seen differently by some people as they describe human rights keeping their own interests in mind.
He said some even try to dent the country's image in the name of human rights violation, and people should beware of them.
Though Modi did not name any person or organisation, the ruling BJP has been critical of a section of human rights groups, including those with a global presence, for allegedly highlighting cases of HR violations selectively and in a one-sided manner to target the government.
In his speech, the prime minister cited a number of measures taken by his government to deliver basic needs like toilets, cooking gas, electricity and homes to the poor and said this give rise to their aspirations and make them more aware of their rights.
He said by making a law against 'triple talaq', his government has bestowed new rights on Muslim women.
The prime minister also spoke of the measures like 26-week maternity leave and more stringent law for rape to highlight his dispensation's empowerment of women.

In a homage to deceased Human Rights activists of Colombia, Doris along with volunteers are writing their names on Bolivar Plaza with shards of glass. Community leaders were harassed, threatened and slain in alarming numbers  in the aftermath of Colombia's peace agreement signed in late 2016. Doris uses glass as her medium because it symbolises the fragility of life - which once broken can never be mended.
