India re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for its 6th term

With 184 votes from the 193-member body, India garnered an overwhelming majority in the United Nations General Assembly for a seat at the Humans Rights Council for the 2022-2024 term.

India’s Permanent Mission to the UN expressed gratitude to the member states for ‘reposing their faith in India’.

The election was a non-contest as there were only 18 candidates for the 18 seats.

Some other countries that made to the council this term are Qatar, Somalia, Eritrea, UAE, Finland and the US.

Under Donald Trump’s presidency in 2018, US left the council accusing the global outfit of chronic bias against Israel.

Tasked with overseeing human rights violations worldwide, the 47 members are voted directly and individually through secret ballot by the General Assembly members for a period of 3 years and are not eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms.
