The University Grants Commission (UGC) sought a report from the Sharda University on Monday about an "objectionable" question asked by it in an exam on similarities between Hindutva and fascism.
The higher education regulator has asked the Greater Noida-based private university to explain in the detailed action-taken report the steps taken by it to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
"It has been noticed that the students objected to the question and filed a complaint with the university. Needless to say that asking students such a question is against the spirit and ethos of our country, which is known for inclusivity and homogeneity and such questions have not been asked," the UGC said in a communication to the Sharda University.
The Political Science (Honours) question in the BA first-year paper asked the students about "Hindutva-Fascism". The question carrying seven marks read, "Do you find any similarities between Fascism/Nazism and Hindu right-wing (Hindutva)? Elaborate with arguments." After the question paper went viral on social media platforms, the university formed a three-member committee to "look into the possibility of bias in the questions".
In a statement issued on Saturday, it said the committee has found the question objectionable and for the purpose of evaluation, it may be ignored by the evaluators.
The university has also issued a show-cause notice to the faculty member who had set the question paper.

The Shiv Sena chief said that anyone is welcome to recite the Hanuman Chalisa at his home but there is a certain way to go about it and people can't resort to bullying. 
Thackeray was referring to the political controversy that broke out following arrest of independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana for saying they would chant the Hanuman Chalisa outside the Maharashtra CM's residence. The couple has now been charged with sedition. 
Uddhav Thackeray also lashed at out at the BJP for questioning Shiv Sena's Hindutva. 
"Shiv Sena's Hindutva is 'Gadadhari' whereas your Hindutva is 'Ghantadhari'. What do you mean when you say Shiv Sena has abandoned Hindutva? Is Hindutva a 'dhotar' (a garment worn by men which is tied around the waist)?" Thackeray asked.

Union Minister Anupriya Patel, whose party Apna Dal is a BJP ally in UP, has distanced herself from the BJP's Hindutva pitch. Just days before the first phase of polling in UP, Patel on on Monday said that her party is ideologically different from the BJP and they had no association with “Hindutva and all those issues”.
Patel also stressed that Muslims candidates are not untouchables for the Apna Dal. The Apna Dal, which has been BJP's ally in the last three elections in Uttar Pradesh – the 2014 and 2019 general elections and the 2017 assembly polls -- has announced its first Muslim candidate this time.
Haider Ali, the grandson of Congress veteran Begum Noor Bano, was the first candidate announced by the Apna Dal. He is contesting against senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam Khan from Suar.
Like the previous polls, BJP has not fielded any Muslim candidate in this election too. The party has been attacking Samajwadi Party for being pro-Muslim. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly made comments such as Abba Jaan, Qabristan and 80 Vs 20 seen as targeted at Muslims.

After widespread outrage over hate speeches and calls to kill Muslim at a dharam sansad in Haridwar, Uttarakhand Police have filed an FIR.
While dozens of Hindu fanatics gave open calls to violence against Muslims at the meet, the FIR has named just one person - a Muslim who recently converted into Hinduism. No arrest has been made in the matter.
The FIR has been Filed four days after the event on the complaint of Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale and it names Jitender Narayan, alias Waseem Rizvi, who was earlier the chairman of Shia Waqf board of Uttar Pradesh.
The FIR says he and others have given "derogatory and inflammatory statement against Islam" at the conclave.
The police had initially claimed that no FIR was filed as there was no complaint.
The religious assembly, being referred to as Haridwar "Hate Assembly", sparked a row after videos of Hindu leaders,  including Yati Narsinghanand, making provocative speeches and inciting violence against minority communities surfaced on social media.
The event, where bone-chilling calls to arms and violence were made was also attended by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, who was earlier arrested in a case of anti-Muslim slogans at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

After Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his 'Hindu versus Hindutvawadi' salvo, the BJP has hit back asking him to apologise.
"On one side is Hindu. On the other is Hindutvawadi. On one side is truth, love and non-violence and on the other is falsehood, hatred and violence," Rahul Gandhi had said in Amethi.
"Hindutvawadi bathes alone in Ganga, but a Hindu will bathe with crores of others," Gandhi said at a public gathering, taking a swipe at the prime minister who recently inaugurated the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi after taking a holy dip.
"Narendra Modi Ji says that he is a Hindu, but when did he protect the truth.... (Is he) Hindu or Hindutvawadi?" Gandhi said at a public gathering, raising the issue of jobs, China's incursions and farm laws. Mahatma Gandhi was a Hindu as he fought against injustice while a Hindutvawadi is like Nathu Ram Godse who used to lie, spread violence and had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress leader said.
Slamming Rahul Gandhi, union minister Smriti Irani tok a swipe saying real Hindus are not those who wear Janeu (sacred thread) over their coats during election season. "Real Hindus are those who make roads and schools for all to benefit," she said.
UP deputy CM Dinesh Sharma hit back at the Congress leader saying: "Rahul Gandhi's remark is condemnable &amp; deserves criticism. Elections will come &amp; go, he should immediately apologize to PM Modi".

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said his party's ideology is like a "beautiful jewel" with an unending power inside it, but it has been overshadowed by the BJP, and maintained Hindu and Hindutva are different concepts.
If crystalized, the Congress ideology which is alive and vibrant will envelope that of the BJP-RSS, he said and emphasised on strengthening his party's ideas within the organisation and spreading them across the country.
Gandhi was addressing online a four-day 'AICC orientation programme' organised at Sevagram Ashram in Wardha. Congress representatives from across the states are participating in the programme.
He said, "We have to accept that there are two ideologies in India - the Congress ideology and the RSS ideology. We have to accept the BJP-RSS has spread hatred in today's India." The former Congress president said there has been "complete capture" of the media by the saffron outfit.
"The BJP has overshadowed the loving, affectionate and nationalistic ideology of the Congress party. Our ideology is alive and vibrant, but it has been overshadowed by the BJP," said the Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad in Kerala.
"It has been overshadowed partly because of complete capture of the media and complete capture of the Indian nation. It has also been overshadowed as we have not propagated our ideology among our own people aggressively," said Gandhi.
Gandhi observed that Hindutva and Hinduism are two different concepts.
&ldquo;These are the types of things we need to explore and understand and develop a group of people...100, 200, 300, 500 people who deeply understand these differences, who can apply these differences to issues, behaviour, to action.
&ldquo;Is Hinduism about beating a Sikh, or a Muslim. Hindutva, of course, is. In which book is it written? I have not seen it. I have read the Upanishads. I have not read it,&rdquo; he said.
"We say there is a difference between Hindutva and Hindu religion. It is a simple logic - if you are a Hindu then why do you need Hindutva? why do you need this new name?" he asked.
The Congress leader said in today's India, ideological fight has become very important.
"The Congress ideology...the ideology it follows has been existing in India for thousands of years. Just like the RSS has its icons, the Congress has its own icons... they are different icons. But, we have them, it is about bringing this ideological ocean and allowing our people to swim in it," he said.
Gandhi admitted the Congress did not propagate its ideas properly in the past.
"Now is the time to strengthen Congress ideology in its own organisation and spread its across India through party workers," he said.
The Congress MP stressed on importance of ideological training, which he said, should be mandatory for all party workers.
"The central way to propagate the party&rsquo;s ideology is by training people in a conversation about what it means to be a Congress person and how is that different from being an RSS person," Gandhi said.
&ldquo;Ideologically training of party workers, in my view, should be made mandatory irrespective of seniority,&rdquo; Gandhi said in his address.
Gandhi said the Congress ideology, if studied and propagated deeply in the organisation, has answers of all questions related to various issues of public concern - ranging from Article 370, terrorism to nationalism, but the party doesn&rsquo;t give necessary &ldquo;tools&rdquo; to its workers to articulate them.
Gandhi said the Congress ideology is like a "beautiful jewel" with an unending power inside it.
"It is our strength...it is why we exist and it is important we discover it. They (BJP) have discovered their ideology and crystalized it. We have to crystalize our ideology and the moment we do that it will envelope their ideology. The hate that is being spread today will vanish and the future which seems uncertain will become certain," he added.
Recalling his conversation with former Uttarakhand minister Yashpal Arya who returned to the party fold last month, Gandhi said Arya told him for a Congressman, it is very suffocating to survive in the BJP.&nbsp;
