Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and Baripada in Odisha recorded a maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department.
According to IMD, heatwave conditions are prevailing in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal since the last eight days; coastal Andhra Pradesh since the last six days; Bihar since the last five days; and Punjab and Haryana since the last two days.

Delhi's Safdarjung Observatory recorded the mercury at 40.4 degrees Celsius, which is higher than normal.

Above-normal heatwave days are expected in most parts of central, east, and northwest India during this period.
According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal until Monday (April 17), north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha until Saturday (April 15) and Bihar from April 15 to April 17.
The maximum temperatures in central and north peninsular India are hovering in the range of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius at present.
The weather department said maximum temperatures are three to five notches above normal in many parts of the western Himalayan region and northeast India, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
In an extended-range forecast, the IMD said heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh on some days between April 20 and April 26.
A heatwave is declared if the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, at least 37 degrees in coastal areas and at least 30 degrees in hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 degrees.
In 2023, India experienced its hottest February since record-keeping began in 1901. However, above-normal rainfall in March kept temperatures in check.

March 2022 was the warmest ever and the third driest in 121 years. The year also saw the country's third-warmest April since 1901.
In India, about 75 per cent of workers (around 380 million people) experience heat-related stress.
A report by the McKinsey Global Institute warns that if this continues, by 2030, the country could lose between 2.5 per cent to 4.5 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product per year.&nbsp;

 &ldquo;A significantly higher number of heatwave days are predicted over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana,&rdquo; IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mahapatra said in a virtual press conference.

Heat action plans (HAPs) are the primary policy response to economically damaging and life-threatening heatwaves. They prescribe a number of activities, disaster responses and post-heatwave response measures to reduce the impact of heatwaves.
The weather bureau said India is expected to see normal rainfall in April.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level meeting to review preparedness for the hot weather conditions during the upcoming summer season and called for preparing separate awareness material for different stake-holders like common citizens, medical professionals, local body authorities and disaster response teams.
The PMO, in a statement, said Modi was briefed about the weather forecast for the next few months and on the likelihood of a normal monsoon and their impact on Rabi crops.
He was also briefed about disasters related to heat, mitigation measures and preparedness of medical infrastructure, the PMO said.
The Food Corporation of India was asked take measures to ensure optimal storage of grains in extreme weather conditions, it said.
Modi instructed India Meteorological Department to prepare daily weather forecasts in a manner which makes predictions easy to interpret and disseminate.

Severe heat waves, responsible for thousands of deaths across India over the last few decades, are increasing with alarming frequency and soon the country could become one of the first places in the world to experience heat waves that break the human survivability limit, according to a new report.
The World Bank report titled "Climate Investment Opportunities in India's Cooling Sector" said the country is experiencing higher temperatures that arrive earlier and stay far longer.
"In April 2022, India was plunged into the grip of a punishing early spring heat wave that brought the country to a standstill, with temperatures in the capital, New Delhi, topping 46 degrees Celsius (oC) (114 degrees Fahrenheit). The month of March, which witnessed extraordinary spikes in temperatures, was the hottest ever recorded", it said.

The report will be released during the two-day "India Climate and Development Partners' Meet" being organised by World Bank in partnership with the Kerala government here.
Predicting that heat waves situation in India could break the human survivability limit, it said the recent heat wave supports what many climate scientists have long cautioned about with reference to rising temperatures across South Asia.
"In August 2021, the Sixth Assessment Report of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that the Indian subcontinent would suffer more frequent and intense heat waves over the coming decade.
"The G20 Climate Risk Atlas also warned in 2021 that heat waves across India were likely to last 25 times longer by 2036-65 if carbon emissions remain high, as in the IPCC's worst-case emission scenario," the report said.
It also warned that rising heat across India can jeopardize economic productivity.
"Up to 75 percent of India's workforce, or 380 million people, depend on heat-exposed labor, at times working in potentially life-threatening temperatures. ...By 2030, India may account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress associated productivity decline", the report said.
It further said India showed the largest heat exposure impacts on heavy labor among South Asian countries, with more than 101 billion hours lost a year.
Analysis by global management consulting firm, McKinsey &amp; Company shows that lost labor from rising heat and humidity could put up to 4.5 per cent of India's GDP &ndash;approximately USD 150-250 billion &ndash; at risk by the end of this decade.
It said India's long-term food security and public health security will depend on a reliable cold chain network.
Transporting food and pharmaceutical goods across India requires a system of cold chain refrigeration that works every step of the way.
"A single temperature lapse in the journey can break the cold chain, spoiling fresh produce and weakening the potency of vaccines. With only 4 per cent of fresh produce in India covered by cold chain facilities, annual estimated food losses total USD 13 billion", it said.
It also noted that the third largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the world, pre-COVID-19, India lost approximately 20 percent of temperature-sensitive medical products and 25 percent of vaccines due to broken cold chains, leading to losses of USD 313 million a year.
"As temperatures rise across India, so will the demand for cooling. However, in a country where two-thirds of the population live on less than USD 2 a day, and where the average cost of an air-conditioning unit can vary between USD 260 and USD 500, air-cooling systems are a luxury available only to a few." According to analysis presented in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP), only eight per cent of Indian households own air-conditioning units.
"Indoor and electric fans can help to maintain thermal comfort, but these too are expensive to buy and inefficient. As a result, many poor and marginalized communities across India are more vulnerable to extreme heat, living in inadequately ventilated, hot and crowded homes without proper access to cooling", the report warned.
Staying cool during extreme heat is about more than just comfort &ndash; it can constitute the precarious line between life and death, it added.

The heatwave in Japan has compelled the authorities to shield its children from the daunting stroke of sun. Children living in Japan's hottest city Kumagaya in Saitama will be provided with special umbrellas after a summer that saw record-breaking temperatures in many parts of the country. 
The umbrellas are made of yellow fibreglass and have been made in a way that it is compatible to battle the mercury level up to 35 degree Celsius. The 336 gram umbrellas city-made umbrellas will be disributed to about 9,000 primary school children next week.
Though it's not the first time that the city has been asking its children not to step out in the afternoon. For the past two years, kids have been instructed to stay indoors amid the sweltering heat that recorded highest temperature partly due to downslope winds.
The current measure has been taken in the wake of a premature end to the raininy season in Tokyo. Earlier this year, Japan government had warned millions of people in Tokyo to save energy or reduce energy consumption by turning off their lights not in use.

Parts of Madhya Pradesh and Delhi sizzled under a severe heatwave as mercury touched 47 degrees Celsius on Sunday at Nowgong, while at least sixteen towns and cities recorded temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and above.
“Heatwave conditions also prevailed over some parts of Vidarbha and over isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, west Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh,” an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“Fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning is very likely over Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep and isolated to scattered over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal during next five days,” the IMD said.
It said squally weather with wind speed 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph were very likely over the southwest Arabian Sea during the next three days and advised fishermen not to venture into these areas.
According to the IMD, rainfall over the country as a whole for the month of May was 83.4 mm, which was 34 per cent more than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 62 mm based on the data of 1961-2010.
During May 2022, rainfall over South Interior Karnataka (232.3 mm) was highest since 1901, the IMD said.
