As the Israel-Hamas conflict intensifies, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday described the situation as "very complex" even as he strongly justified India's recent decision to abstain on a UN General Assembly resolution calling for a humanitarian truce between the two sides.
Jaishankar described the October 7 strikes on Israeli cities by Hamas as "terrorism" but at the same time asserted India's long-standing support for a negotiated two-state solution to the Palestine issue.
"I clearly conclude that it is a very complex situation with a lot of possibilities which are not fully apparent -- possibilities not in a good way," he said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.
Asked if the current crisis will impact initiatives under the I2U2 grouping and implementation of the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project, Jaishankar said it is too early to make any "definitive or even semi-definite conclusion". &nbsp; "Certainly unanticipated problems, even of a serious nature can happen and we are seeing one right now. But I do not think because something has happened and that if you have a larger goal and a larger plan that you immediately start rethinking and revising that," he said.
"I think you keep your master plan going. You do the work. You also side-by-side respond to whatever else has happened out there," he said.
The external affairs minister also justified New Delhi's decision to abstain on the UN General Assembly resolution on the Hamas-Israel conflict.
"We have a very clear policy on terrorism. We have no doubt and we have said this very very clearly that what happened on October 7 was terrorism. It is not just a government view," he said.
"If you ask the average Indian, terrorism is an issue which is very close to people's heart because very few countries or societies suffer as much as we have from terrorism," he added.
"When further developments happened and Israelis moved on to Gaza, I think we also recognised as a matter of principle that whatever action is taken, international humanitarian law must be observed," he said.
The UN General Assembly last week adopted the resolution for an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce between Israeli forces and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
"When it comes to the issue of Palestine, again we have been very clear that the only solution that we see is a two-state solution. (That) is of an independent viable Palestine state. That state can only be arrived at through direct dialogue between Palestinians and Israel," he said.
"So you have really now three sets of issues. From a policy perspective, you cannot say I believe strongly on issue number three and that I am willing to disregard issue number one and two, or I believe two, so will disregard one," he said.&nbsp;

&ldquo;We share in the grief of the parents, Ronit and Mordechai, and the sisters: Yasmin, Hila, Vered, and Shaked .... Halel aspired to do a meaningful service and enlisted in the Givati (Brigade). Halel was a devoted son and had respect for his parents always in his eyes. Possessing immense good qualities he believed in endless giving, modesty, and humility. The whole city of Dimona is grieving his passing,&rdquo; Bitton wrote.
Dimona is a town in the south of Israel identified with Israel&rsquo;s nuclear reactor but some also describe it as &ldquo;little India&rdquo; given the large concentration of Jews from India in the township.
Indian community members told PTI that he was &ldquo;a young man with pleasant manners and a very bright future ahead.&rdquo; They expressed huge sorrow at his passing away and at the loss of lives of other young Israelis &ldquo;fighting a just war for Israel&rsquo;s existence.&rdquo; At least 11 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the battle in Gaza in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as a &ldquo;difficult war&rdquo; with &ldquo;painful losses,&rdquo; but vowed to continue &ldquo;until victory.&rdquo; &ldquo;We are in a difficult war. This will be a long war. We have so many important achievements but also painful losses,&rdquo; Netanyahu said.
&ldquo;We know that every soldier of ours is an entire world. The entire people of Israel embrace you, the families, from the depth of our hearts. We are all with you during your heavy sorrow. Our soldiers have fallen in the most just of wars, the war for our home,&rdquo; the Israeli Prime Minister said.
&ldquo;I promise the citizens of Israel: We will complete the work &ndash; we will continue until victory,&rdquo; he stressed.

Israel, backed by the United States and some other Western nations, declared war against Hamas which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 with two stated goals - elimination of the terror organisation and freeing the hostages.
More than 8,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel launched a counter-offensive by first carrying out widespread air strikes and then slowly launching ground incursions that have been intensifying over the last three days.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces were attacking Hamas militants and infrastructure in northern Gaza.

Video released by the military wing of Hamas on Tuesday claimed to show attacks against Israeli positions in the border town of Erez.
The footage from the al-Qassam Brigades shows fighters climbing out of a tunnel and firing weapons towards the town.
The Associated Press is unable to independently verify the video.

The Russians told us that what happened on October 7 would be taught in military academies. The Chinese are thinking of carrying out a plan in Taiwan, doing what the Al-Qassam Brigades did on October 7. The Arabs are giving the world a masterclass."&nbsp; Mashal is a founding member of Hamas politburo and was the chairman until 2017. A delegation from Hamas visited Moscow on Thursday for talks on the release of foreign hostages including Russian citizens that the militant group is currently holding in Gaza, TASS reported. Israel has reacted angrily to the development and has called on the government of President Vladimir Putin to expel Hamas members. The Hamas group meanwhile has lauded Putin and his administration for their efforts to end the war.&nbsp;

As the death toll rises to 7000 in Gaza, including 3,000 children Priyanka Gandhi says all international laws have been violated by Israel.

Slamming the cycle of violence in Gaza, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said there is no international law that has not been violated there and asked when will humanity wake up.
According to media reports, the rising death toll in Gaza is unprecedented in the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. &nbsp;The Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza said Thursday that more than 7,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict.
In a post in Hindi on X, Priyanka Gandhi said that even after the killing of 7,000 people in Gaza, the cycle of bloodshed and violence has not stopped. &nbsp;Out of these 7,000 people, 3,000 were innocent children, she noted.
"There is no international law that has not been trampled upon. There is no such limit which has not been crossed. There is no such rule which has not been flouted," Priyanka Gandhi said.
"When will humanity wake up? After losing how many lives. After sacrificing how many children. Does the consciousness of being human remain? Did it ever exist?" she said.
Over 1,400 people were killed in the unprecedented attacks on Israel by Hamas on October 7. Hamas has held more than 220 people hostage in Gaza.
