Four people died and over 100 were injured as a &ldquo;sudden&rdquo; storm wreaked havoc in parts of Jalpaiguri district in northern West Bengal on Sunday, officials said.
Several hutments and houses were damaged, trees uprooted and electric poles came crashing down as strong winds accompanied by hail struck most parts of the district headquarters town and many areas of neighbouring Mainaguri, they said.
Among the most affected areas were Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga and Saptibari, the officials said, adding that several acres of agricultural land and crops suffered damages.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the storm, and said he had spoken with officials and asked them to ensure proper assistance to those affected by it.
"My thoughts are with those affected by the storms in Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri areas of West Bengal. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones," Modi said on X.
"I would also urge all @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas to assist those affected,&rdquo; the PM added.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who cancelled her scheduled programmes, is currently heading to meet the victims&rsquo; families, TMC sources said.
Governor C V Ananda Bose will also be leaving for Jalpaiguri on Monday to visit the affected areas, Raj Bhavan officials said.
The deceased were identified as Dijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Burman (45), Jagen Roy (72) and Samar Roy (64).
"Many pedestrians were injured by hail. The disaster response team has been deployed and helpdesks set up," a senior official of Jalpaiguri district said.
Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy told PTI that several people have been admitted to hospital with injuries.
An emergency cell has also been opened at the Raj Bhavan to deal with the situation in Jalpaiguri, the officials said.
Banerjee said personnel of the civil administration, police and disaster management have been deployed for relief work.
"Sad to know that sudden heavy rainfall and stormy winds brought disasters today afternoon in some Jalpaiguri-Maynaguri areas, with loss of human lives, injuries, house damages, uprooting of trees and electricity poles etc," she said on X.
"District administration will provide compensation to next of kin in the case of the deaths, and the injured as per rules and following the MCC (model code of conduct)," she added.
According to an official statement, the governor is in touch with the disaster management authority in Delhi, and has requested it to rush more reinforcement by way of manpower and materials to Jalpaiguri.
"He will camp in Jalpaiguri tomorrow and visit ground zero and houses of the victims," it said.&nbsp;

Parts of Assam, Manipur, and West Bengal suffered extensive damage to homes, crops, and livestock after strong winds coupled with heavy rains lashed the northeastern part of India.
In West Bengal's Jalpaiguri, four people lost their lives and more than 100 others were injured. In Assam, Jorhat witnessed widespread destruction of homes and crops.
A similar situation was also reported in Manipur villages.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, a&nbsp;sudden downpour accompanied by a storm wreaked havoc at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here on Sunday, prompting the authorities to briefly halt operations and divert six flights to other destinations, a senior official said.
The storm uprooted a big tree at the Oil India complex outside the Adani Group-controlled facility and blocked a road, Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah told PTI.
"We immediately rushed there and cleared the road for smooth supply of fuel to the terminal. It took us over half-an-hour," he said.
When the rain and storm lashed the area, a portion of the roof was blown away in the forecourt area, Baruah said.
"It was very old and could not withstand the impact. Due to this, the ceiling broke open and water started flowing inside. However, there was no injury and everything is under control," he said.
A purported video of the ceiling falling apart and rainwater gushing has gone viral on different social media platforms.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that due to a severe hailstorm, several houses under Moran and Tingkhong revenue circles have been reportedly damaged.

A severe hailstorm hit several places in Dibrugarh district in Assam, damaging over 500 houses across villages, officials said on Tuesday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a warning that thunderstorms and lightning with hail are very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and other states in the northeastern region during the next 24 hours.
A senior official of the Dibrugarh district administration told PTI that the damage assessment is still on and no report of any casualty has been received.
The hailstorm lashed Moran, Tingkhang, Lahowal, Lekai, Naharkatia and other areas on Monday late night and Tuesday early morning, the official said.
"It has led to widespread damage in the district. As per preliminary assessment in Moran sub-division, 310 houses have been damaged in 37 villages," he said.
In Tingkhang, 202 structures across 21 villages and five houses in two villages of Lekai have also been badly damaged, the official said.
"One government lower primary school under Dibrugarh East revenue circle was affected. Nagachapari LP School in the Lahowal area was badly damaged," he added.
In the neighbouring Tinsukia district, a hailstorm lashed the Khetojan Tea Estate on Tuesday morning but no report of damage has been received, another official said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that due to a severe hailstorm, several houses under Moran and Tingkhong revenue circles have been reportedly damaged.
"Have instructed officials to make a detailed assessment of the damages caused. Government is extending all possible help to all those affected by it," he said on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati in a bulletin said light snow is "very likely" to occur at isolated places in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours.
"Light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at a few places over the rest of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur at isolated pockets over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura," it added.
The RMC has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for the entire Northeastern region and said thunderstorms and lightning with hail are very likely to occur at isolated places over the seven states.
"Dense Fog is very likely at isolated pockets over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura," it added.
The weather report, however, noted that night temperature did not witness a large change over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the last 24 hours.
