Apple has responded to claims by Opposition leaders that received an alert warning them of state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise" their iPhones.&nbsp;
&nbsp;NDTV reported that Apple in its statement has said that it does not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker.&nbsp;
According to the report, Apple said "Detecting such attacks relies on threat intelligence signals that are often imperfect and incomplete. It's possible that some Apple threat notifications may be false alarms, or that some attacks are not detected."
Apple added that it is unable to provide information about what causes them to issue threat notifications, as it may help state-sponsored attackers adapt their behavior to evade detection.&nbsp;

October alone saw &pound;629m stolen- the most recorded in a single month

2022 was indeed a challenging year for crypto industry after bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX had around $1.4 billion in cash as of the end of 2022. But this is not all, a new report &nbsp;by US-based blockchain analytics firm, Chainalysis says that 2022 was the biggest year ever for the Crypto hacking.&nbsp;

 According to reports, October 2022 alone saw &pound;629m stolen- the most recorded in a single month. It further said that North Korea-backed hackers stole $1.7bn (&pound;1.4bn) of crypto in 2022, says blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.&nbsp; The annual report by Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis firm which sees its data used by governments, banks, and businesses worldwide, says the activity was largely driven by hackers based in North Korea. Experts have said the country, facing heavy sanctions, is turning to crypto theft to fund its nuclear arsenal.

Major Australian healthcare company alleges data breach by Russian hackers

Australian Federal Police commissioner Reece Kershaw blamed the attack on Russia-based "cyber criminals".

Russian hackers carried out a cyberattack on a major Australian healthcare company that breached the data of 9.7 million people, including the country's prime minister, police said Friday.
The hackers started leaking the data this week after Medibank, the country's largest health insurer, refused to pay a $9.7 million (Aus$15 million) ransom.
Australian Federal Police commissioner Reece Kershaw blamed the attack on Russia-based "cyber criminals".
"We believe those responsible for the breach are in Russia," he told reporters.
"Our intelligence points to a group of loosely affiliated cyber criminals who are likely responsible for past significant breaches across the world."
The hackers have been drip-feeding the stolen data to a dark web forum.
The first leaks appeared to have been selected to cause maximum harm: targeting those who received treatment related to drug abuse, sexually transmitted infections, or pregnancy terminations.

Kershaw said the hackers also appeared to be supported by people living outside Russia.
"These cyber criminals are operating like a business with affiliates and associates who are supporting the business.
"We also believe that some affiliates may be in other countries."
He added that Australian police would be working with Interpol and seeking the cooperation of their counterparts in Russia.
"We'll be holding talks with Russian law enforcement about these individuals," he said.
"Russia benefits from the intelligence sharing and data shared through Interpol and with that comes responsibilities and accountability."

Former UK PM Liz Truss' phone hacked by Russian agents: report

The article did not make clear on what basis Russia was suspected to be behind the alleged attack.

UK opposition politicians called for an investigation Saturday after a newspaper reported that suspected Kremlin agents had hacked ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss's cell phone when she was foreign minister.
In an unconfirmed report, The Mail on Sunday cited unnamed security sources as saying that Truss's personal mobile phone had been hacked "by agents suspected of working for the Kremlin".
They are believed to have gained access to "top-secret exchanges with international partners".
A government spokesperson said: "We do not comment on individuals' security arrangements" but added that there are "robust systems in place to protect against cyber threats".
The hackers also gained access to Truss's conversations with her ally Kwasi Kwarteng criticising then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the report claimed.
Labour's Yvette Cooper, who focuses on homeland security, said the report raises "immensely important national security issues" including why and how the information was leaked.
"It is essential that all of these security issues are being investigated and addressed at the very highest level," she said.
Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesperson Layla Moran said: "We need an urgent independent investigation to uncover the truth."
The BBC and Sky News said they had not been able to verify the report.

A source told the paper the "compromised" phone has been placed inside a locked safe in a secure government location after up to a year's messages were hacked including "highly sensitive discussions" on the war in Ukraine.
The hacking was discovered in the summer when Truss was foreign minister and campaigning to become party leader and the next prime minister, the paper reported.
It claimed that "details were suppressed" by Johnson when prime minister and Simon Case, his most senior policy adviser.
The reported incident comes after interior minister Suella Braverman was reappointed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak following her resignation over a security breach, in which she reportedly sent a top-secret document to an MP via her personal email.
The article did not make clear on what basis Russia was suspected to be behind the alleged attack.
But it quoted a security source as saying: "It takes a while to track who is behind attacks like these, but Russia tends to top the list."
Former Tory leader, MP Iain Duncan Smith told the newspaper: "Russia does this all the time."

The Pegasus snooping row has again thrown into spotlight the issue of how safe our phones are. While most people do not need to worry about Pegasus, there are several other hacking and spying software and apps that you need to be cautious of.
While some apps try to access financial information from your phone like bank account details or passwords, others can take complete control over your phone including photo gallery, calls, messages and more.
But there are signs that you can look for, which tell you if your phone has been hacked.
#1 Phone's battery is draining faster than usualIf your phone's battery is draining faster than usual, malware and fraudulent apps may be using malicious code that tends to drain a lot of power. But before we scare you, check the number of apps running in the background. First close them and then monitor.
#2 You spot apps that you didn't downloadYour phone may be vulnerabe to hacks if you notice apps on your smartphone that you are sure you didn't download.
#3 Your phone is crashing too many timesKeep an eye out if you find your smartphone is acting weird. Apps crash unexpectedly or fail to load. Many sites look different than they usually do, is a telltale sign.

Beware! Behind that WhatsApp message from a new number with your friend's profile picture could be a fraudster. WhatsApp scams have started cropping up in alarming numbers recently. And they're growing more and more audacious.
Recently, a senior IAS officer in Jammu and Kashmir claimed that he had become a victim of cyber fraud. Shahid Choudhary accused scamsters of impersonating him on WhatsApp by using his photograph. The criminals allegedly contacted Choudhary's friends and colleagues and sought financial help.
Days earlier, Chandigarh's police chief was targeted in a similar way. Fraudsters posed as Praveer Ranjan on WhatsApp and asked the DGP's acquintances to send Amazon gift cards.

In March, a similar scam took place in Kerala. A teacher in Kollam was duped of ₹14 lakh after fraudsters sent WhatsApp messages posing as Kerala's police chief. The teacher was told that she had won the lottery and would be booked if tax was not paid on the winnings. The number used to send the messages was reportedly registered in an Assam native's name.
Recent cases have highlighted at least 3 types of common scams which are perpetrated through WhatsApp and Facebook.
The first is WhatsApp hijacking. Scamsters try to log into their target's WhatsApp account by using that person's phone number. Then, to get the verification pin, the criminals pose as WhatsApp technicians. If the target shares the PIN, then scamsters gain access to the person's WhatsApp account. Subsequently, they send messages to the target's friends and family seeking money, or further OTPs.

The second type is the WhatsApp DP scam which we told you about earlier. For this, a WhatsApp account is created using a fake or virtual SIM. Then a government official's photograph is set as the profile picture. Subsequently, messages are sent to unsuspecting people seeking money or other favours.
Another type of scam involves fake Facebook accounts. In this, scamsters create fake accounts of their targets and then contact the target's friends and family. Covid troubles, and financial crisis are common excuses used by scamsters to seek money in this type of con.
With such cases emerging in various parts of the country, authorities have been spreading awareness and telling people how to stay safe.
Some of the basic precautions include not replying to messages from unknown numbers even if the profile picture is of a person whom you know. Do not transfer money without verifying the request offline with the person asking for help.
Do not share OTPs, passwords, bank details, and credit and debit card information under any circumstances. Do not install remote access apps, and do not click on suspicious links. Also, secure your social media accounts by enabling two-factor authentication.
Cyber criminals prey on people's lack of awareness to carry out their cons. So share this information as widely as possible to make such scams virtually impossible.

DragonForce has been associated with Pakistani hacking groups in the past.
Another group whose name has emerged is 1877. It is apparently a grouping of Iraqi hackers who seem to have partnered with DragonForce for OpsPatuk. 1877 group attacked the ICAR website, among others.
Then there is One Hat Cyber Team, a group of hackers who apparently belong to Indonesia. The One Hat Cyber Team hacked the website of Thane Police, and demanded an apology over the Mohammad controversy.
The targets of these cyber criminals have been varied. Some of the websites which were attacked include those of the Indian embassy in Israel, the Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Thane Police, National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and Institute of Science, Nagpur.
Cyber crime is turning out to be a major threat for India. The country saw 1.8 crore cyber attacks and threats in the first three months of 2022, as per US-based cyber security firm Norton. Between January and March, India saw almost 60,000 phishing attempts, and over 30,000 tech support scams, according to the Norton study.
To fight off hacking attempts, website owners must examine vulnerabilities and plug loopholes. This would include fixing issues like default passwords, and unpatched or outdated servers.

Some of the websites which were attacked include those of the Indian embassy in Israel, the Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Thane Police, National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and Institute of Science, Nagpur.
Cyber crime is turning out to be a major threat for India. The country saw 1.8 crore cyber attacks and threats in the first three months of 2022, as per US-based cyber security firm Norton. Between January and March, India saw almost 60,000 phishing attempts, and over 30,000 tech support scams, according to the Norton study.
To fight off hacking attempts, website owners must examine vulnerabilities and plug loopholes. This would include fixing issues like default passwords, and unpatched or outdated servers.

The statement adds, investigative journalists and media outlets have made clear from the outset, in very clear language, that this is a list of numbers marked as numbers of interest to NSO customers, meaning they are the kind of people NSO clients might like to spy on.

"In 2019, WhatsApp discovered and defeated an attack from NSO. They rely on unknown vulnerabilities in mobile OSes, which is one of the reasons why we felt it was so important to raise awareness of what we'd found," he tweeted.
He added that in 2019, WhatsApp worked with CitizenLab, which identified over 100 cases of abusive targeting of human rights defenders and journalists in more than 20 countries. "But today's reporting shows that the true scale of abuse is even larger, and with terrifying national security implications," Cathcart added.
He suggested that companies and governments, especially, hold NSO Group accountable for this unwanted tracking. "Once again, we urge a global moratorium on the use of unaccountable surveillance technology now. It's past time," he added.
Cathcart claimed that this should be seen as a wake-up call for security on the Internet as smartphones are the primary device for many people. Governments and companies should do everything to secure it as much as possible. "Our security and freedom depend on it," he added.

He added that in 2019, WhatsApp worked with CitizenLab, which identified over 100 cases of abusive targeting of human rights defenders and journalists in more than 20 countries. "But today's reporting shows that the true scale of abuse is even larger, and with terrifying national security implications," Cathcart added.
He suggested that companies and governments, especially, hold NSO Group accountable for this unwanted tracking. "Once again, we urge a global moratorium on the use of unaccountable surveillance technology now. It's past time," he added.
Cathcart claimed that this should be seen as a wake-up call for security on the Internet as smartphones are the primary device for many people. Governments and companies should do everything to secure it as much as possible. "Our security and freedom depend on it," he added.
"That's why we continue to defend end-to-end encryption so tirelessly. To those who have proposed weakening end-to-end encryption: deliberately weakening security will have terrifying consequences for us all," Cathcart said.
