An avalanche struck Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg region, leaving one foreigner dead and another missing.

One foreigner died, while another is reportedly missing after an avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg region on February 22. The deceased was later identified as Hanten from Moscow in Russia. A plice officer told PTI news agency that his body has been taken to the Tangmarg sub-district hospital for post-mortem.
The avalanche struck the Kongdoori slopes, trapping several skiers. Officials told PTI news agency that the foreigners had gone to the ski slopes without local residents, they said.
According to police, the group of seven Russians and a local guide ventured into a non-ski zone in the Army Ridge area, which is avalanche prone.
"There was an avalanche warning but they still ventured into that zone and unfortunately one skier died," Gulmarg police station SHO Haroon Kar said.
Besides the Army and police, choppers also have been roped in for the rescue operation.&nbsp;
The rescued persons were treated at a local hospital and one foreigner was being shifted to Srinagar for special treatment.
A government spokesperson said the ongoing 4th Khelo India Winter Games remain unaffected by the incident.
Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council secretary Nuzhat Gull said all athletes participating in the ongoing 4th Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg were safe.
"All Khelo India athletes are safe after the avalanche hit Khilanmarg area of Gulmarg... All the fixtures are being run as per schedule," Gull posted on X.
The Winter Games began on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday.
A spokesman of the Sports Council said all precautionary measures were in place to ensure safety of the players.

A daring rescue operation in Kashmir's hill station saved many trapped skiers on February 5.
Gulmarg witnessed two avalanches burying the skiers, mostly foreigners. &nbsp;
Soon after the incident, the locals identified the spot of the incident and started rescue work. As per reports, all tourists were rescued to safety.
The incident reportedly took place at Apharwat Gandola phase 2. Pertinently, J&amp;K received moderate to heavy snowfall after a long dry spell.&nbsp;

On cam: massive avalanche hits popular ski resort in Gulmarg, several skiers feared trapped  

The bodies of the two Polish nationals have been recovered and moved to the hospital for medico-legal procedures.

Two Polish tourists died in a massive avalanche that hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday, police said.
Skiers, both foreigners and locals, were at the slopes when the avalanche hit. At least 19 foreigners have so far been rescued successfully, police said.
The bodies of the two Polish nationals have been recovered and moved to the hospital for medico-legal procedures.
Rescue operations are still in progress in the tourist town, in Baramulla district, with police teams on the job.
The number of those missing is not known.
"Avalanche hit the Afarwat peak #HapathKhud at famous ski resort in #Gulmarg. #Rescue operation has been launched by #Baramulla Police along with other agencies. Reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated. More details shall follow," a spokesperson of the Baramulla district police said on Twitter soon after the incident. Videos of the avalanche, showing people running for their lives, circulated widely on social media.&nbsp;
