With the BJP losing the Delhi civic polls on Wednesday, the saffron party's top leader from northeast and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the party could have devoted more attention to the contest, had it not coincided with Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections.
He also asserted that the BJP would perform well in Gujarat, where counting of votes will be taken up on Thursday.
The chief minister, however, did not comment on the party's prospects in Himachal Pradesh.
The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday bagged 134 out of 250 wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to emerge as the winner, thereby ending BJP's 15-year-long tenure at the civic body.

The saffron camp managed to finish with 104 wards in its kitty.
The Congress clinched nine wards and Independents three.
"In Delhi, we were being given 60-70 seats (exit poll prediction), but we have done much better," Sarma said on the sidelines of a programme.
"Had the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh not happened alongside, we could have focused more on Delhi," he added, indicating that the results might have swayed in favour of the BJP.
Sarma had campaigned for his party both in Gujarat and Delhi.
The BJP leader further said, "A very good result is expected from Gujarat tomorrow." The chief minister also maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity is on the rise.
"Several elections are held within a five-year period. One thing we can understand is that Modiji&rsquo;s popularity has only been increasing over time," Sarma added.

The others were leading in five seats, including a candidate of the Samajwadi Party in Kutiyana seat of Porbandar district and four independents in Dhanera, Vaghodia, Santrampur and Deesa.

As counting of votes for Gujarat assembly polls is underway, a look at the performance of some of the heavyweights who contested the elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and Patidar leader Hardik Patel was locked in a neck-and-neck contest with Amarsinh Thakor of the Aam Aadmi Party in urban Viramgram assembly, early trends showed.
After trailing for a while, Patel had taken slender lead of 2,371 votes over Thakor at the end of four rounds of counting. Vote count in favour of Patel stood at 14,304 votes, compared to 11,933 votes for Thakor. The sitting MLA of Viramgram, who hails from Congress party, was seen coming a distant third, with 3,921 votes in his bag.
A native of Chandranagar village in Viramgam taluka, Hardik Patel was born and brought up in Viramgam town. He shot into prominence following the 2015 Patidar agitation for reservation in jobs, which he led. That agitation was widely credited for an impressive performance by the Congress party in 2017.
Meanwhile, Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday headed for a second straight win from the urban constituency of Ghatlodia, where he had taken a comfortable lead of almost 20,000 votes over his nearest rival after five rounds of vote counting.
As per the latest update from the Election Commission, Patel had polled 23,713 votes, compared to 3,840 votes polled by his Congress rival Amiben Yagnik. AAP candidate Vijay Patel was running third with 2,168 votes.
Isudan Gadhvi, the Aam Aadmi Party&rsquo;s CM face in Gujarat, on Thursday took an early lead over Congress party&rsquo;s sitting MLA from Khambhalia, Vikram Madam, while BJP&rsquo;s Mulubhai Bera was seen finishing third.

After four rounds of voting in the assembly polls, Gadhvi had polled 13,658 votes, compared to 9,889 votes polled by incumbent Madam. BJP&rsquo;s Bera had picked up 5,703 votes, according to the latest update available from the Election Commission.

According to the News X-Jan Ki Baat exit poll on Gujarat elections, the BJP was likely to get 117-140 seats, Congress-NCP 34-51, AAP 6-13 and others 1-2.
Republic TV P-MARQ predicted 128-148 seats for the BJP, 30-42 for the Congress-NCP, AAP 2-10 and others 0-3.

An average 59.24 per cent voter turn-out was recorded as of 5 pm on Thursday across 89 Assembly seats in the first phase of Gujarat elections, election officials said.
While voting began at 8 in the morning and ended at 5 pm, the final turn-out would be higher as the process continued at the polling stations where voters had arrived before 5 pm and were standing in queues.
The fate of 788 candidates will be decided in the first phase.
Barring a few incidents, polling was largely peaceful across all 89 seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions which went to polls in the first phase.
The voter turn-out figure was provisional as data from some polling stations had not been received and it also did not include postal ballots, the Election Commission said.
Voting was halted in a few places due to malfunctioning of Electronic Voting Machines as well as control units and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) but the faulty units were replaced and the process resumed, it added.
