Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Monday reflected on the Emergency, calling it a "dark period" in post-Independence India's history when constitutional rights were crushed.
Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency's imposition in 1975, Dattatreya, who was an RSS functionary at that time, shared his personal experiences of evading arrest and his imprisonment.
Upon declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975, he had received instructions to avoid arrest as many activists were already rounded up.
"The rules of the Constitution that safeguard democracy were all crushed (during Emergency)," he told PTI Videos here.
To evade authorities, he said he went underground and adopted a new appearance by wearing a suit and tie and even changed his name to 'Dharmendra'.
His primary role while underground was to organise activists across various locations against the Emergency, and also ensuring their safety and providing support to the families of leaders who were arrested.
In one instance, Dattatreya and fellow activists attempted to hold a covert political meeting under the guise of a Satyanarayana Puja near a temple.
As police converged on the location, Dattatreya said he and present Tripura Governor N Indrasena Reddy managed to escape by scaling a 20-foot wall.
While Reddy escaped unharmed, Dattatreya hurt his leg in the process.
Eventually, he was arrested and imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). and lodged in Chanchalguda Jail in Hyderabad, where he was held alongside several political prisoners.
During his incarceration, he learned of his elder brother's demise. He was granted parole to attend the funeral, during which he was advised by a relative to secure his release through a deal by giving in writing to the government that he would not be part of such activities again.
However, encouragement from his mother strengthened his resolve to stay committed to the cause.

Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Friday said the future monetary policy actions will be decided by the trajectory of growth and inflation.
If the RBI's expectation of 6.5 per cent real GDP growth and inflation cooling to 3.7 per cent in FY26 plays out, there is "little space" for interest rate cut.
Speaking to reporters here, he also spelled out that the aspirational growth rate for India is 7-8 per cent per annum.
Earlier in the day, the six-member monetary policy committee voted 5:1 in favour of a surprising 50 basis points cut in repo rate. Malhotra also announced a 1 percentage point decrease in cash reserve ratio, or the share of deposits parked with RBI by banks. He also announced a shift in the stance of the monetary policy from 'accommodative' to 'neutral'.
"Neutral will mean that it (rate calls) can go either ways. It will depend on how the data comes in. If the growth is weaker, it can mean that it will go down. If the growth is good, inflation is going up, it can mean that the repo rate can go up. It will depend on how the data both on inflation and growth turns out," Malhotra said.
He said the monetary policy will surely help accelerate the credit growth and help in the broader economic growth.
When asked if he expects the government to shoulder the GDP growth responsibility from here on, the RBI Governor made it clear that there is not much of firepower available with the RBI and it is for other stakeholders to do their bit to push growth.
Malhotra said there is a need for the transmission to get faster in the economy, underlining that the process has been better this time than in the past instances.
He said as against two rate cuts of 0.25 per cent each, the bank deposit rates have come down by 0.27 per cent, outstanding credit by 0.17 per cent. He however conceded that the growth rate of fresh loans is a little slow at 0.06 per cent.
One of the motives of frontloading the rate cuts and coupling it with a CRR reduction is to hasten the transmission, he said.
Malhotra said there was no voting on the stance, but the matter was discussed over the three days of deliberations and all the six members of the rate setting panel were for it.
He said the reason for changing the stance to 'neutral' now is because it was felt that there is no further room to cut rates, and the same had to be conveyed to all stakeholders and provide a certainty.
"Certainty will strengthen the economy," Malhotra said.
On the CRR cut, he said past experience suggests that "we do not need the liquidity buffer at 4 per cent and 3 per cent in the current circumstances is comfortable." He said the call rate is going to stay at 5.25 per cent and will go down if the RBI undertakes Variable Rate Reverse Repo rate (VRRR) auctions.

Former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das and Telangana BJP leader Indra Sena Reddy Nallu have been appointed as the governors of Odisha and Tripura, respectively, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on Wednesday.
Das, currently a national vice president of the BJP, was the first non-tribal chief minister of Jharkhand from 2014 to 2019.
He has been appointed to the gubernatorial post in place of Prof. Ganeshi Lal, who has completed his tenure.
Das was part of the Janata Party in 1977 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a founding member in 1980, according to his biodata.
In 2004, Das was appointed as Jharkhand state president of the BJP.
Das, a grassroots leader of the BJP, is a former employee of Tata Steel.
Indra Sena Reddy Nallu is a BJP leader from Telangana.
Nallu is a BJP national executive member and he succeeds Satyadeo Narain Arya as the Tripura governor.
President Droupadi Murmu is pleased to appoint Das as the governor of Odisha and Nallu as the governor of Tripura, according to a late-night statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices, it added.

&nbsp;The Telangana government has approached the Supreme Court over the Governor allegedly keeping some bills, passed by the legislature, pending, without taking a decision on them.
The State government's plea, filed through the Chief Secretary, is expected to come up for hearing after the Holi vacation, official sources said here on Friday.
In response to the State government moving the Supreme Court over the alleged delay in taking a decision with regard to the bills, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan today said friendly interactions would have been more helpful.
"Dear @TelanganaCS Rajbhavan is nearer than Delhi. Assuming office as CS you didn't find time to visit Rahbhavan officially. No protocol!No courtesy even for courtesy call. Friendly official visits &amp; interactions would have been more helpfull which you Don't even intend," she tweeted.
"Again i remind you Rajbhavan is nearer than Delhi @TelanganaCS," she said.
Relations between Raj Bhavan and the BRS government have not been on the best of terms and Soundararajan had earlier complained of protocol not being followed with regard to her office.
In an open face-off with the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led government, Soundararajan in November last year expressed doubts that her phones were being tapped.
In a dramatic turn of events in January this year, the Telangana Government had moved a Lunch Motion before the High Court seeking a direction to the Governor to approve the file pertaining to budget presentation.
However, following an advice from the court, advocates of the State government and the Raj Bhavan held discussions and informed the court that they both came to an understanding and hence the court can dispose of the petition.
During the discussions, it was agreed that there will be an address by the Governor during the Budget Session and the speech copy would be furnished by the State government.
