In a significant legal development, Google has agreed to a $28 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in pay and career advancement opportunities. The lawsuit accused the tech giant of favoring white and Asian employees over minority workers in terms of salary and career positioning.
The legal action was spearheaded by Ana Cantu, identified as a Mexican racially indigenous individual, who represented a diverse group of minority communities, including Hispanic, Latino, and Native American employees at the corporation.
The settlement was given the green light by Judge Charles Adams of California's Santa Clara County Superior Court last week. Judge Adams described the agreement as "fair and reasonable," declaring it a positive outcome for the class of 6,632 Google employees who worked in California between February 15, 2018, and December 31, 2024.
Despite reaching a settlement, Google maintained its stance against the claims. A company spokesperson stated, "We continue to disagree with the allegations that we treated anyone differently and remain committed to paying, hiring, and leveling all employees fairly."
Cantu, who resigned from Google in September 2021, argued that despite her seven years of exemplary service, she remained stagnant in her role while white and Asian colleagues received promotions and higher pay. She also claimed that minority employees performing equivalently were assigned lower job "levels," and that those who raised concerns faced obstacles in career advancement.
She contended that these actions violated the California Equal Pay Act, prompting her to leave the company.
The final settlement amount allocates $20.4 million to affected employees after accounting for $7 million in legal fees, penalties related to Cantu's claim under California's Private Attorneys General Act, and other associated costs.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai when questioned about the massive layoffs that has been going on in the company since last year said that Google is "taking the time to do it correctly and well." According to a report from CNBC, Google's Pichai faced questioning from employees during an all-hands meeting.

While criticised for his leadership &nbsp;and the culture around layoffs, the Google top boss said that as a leader of such a large company, he makes "fewer consequential decisions, but they need to be clear."
He further mentioned that the majority of the layoffs would happen in the first six months of 2024. "Assuming current conditions, the second half of the year will be much smaller in scale," Pichai told the employees present in the meeting. He added that Google must be "very, very disciplined" about hiring more employees throughout the year.
As per Bloomberg, he told that Google is simplifying teams and moving people to focus on new areas while in a few cases, the company is also removing some teams entirely to &ldquo;improve velocity&rdquo;

In 2023, Google had laid off about 12,000 people while many have been laid off from core engineering and hardware teams in 2024. Last month, in a restructuring effort tech giant Google has cut some jobs and announced that a small part of the impacted jobs will move to hubs the company is investing in, including India, Chicago, Atlanta and Dublin
Sundar Pichai had said that Google is "reallocating people" to its "highest priorities."
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of demand to do new things and, in the past, we would have just done it reflexively by growing headcount. We can&rsquo;t do it now through the transition we are in", adding, "We see opportunities where we can re-allocate people and get things done", he said.
Last year, in a memo, Sundar Pichai expressed apologies for layoffs and said that the firm hired for a different economic perspective.
"Over the past two years we've seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today," he had said.

A LinkedIn post by a Google laid off employee who has described the night of layoff has gone viral. This comes amid media reports of Google sacking its entire Python team for cheaper labour.&nbsp;
In the post Matt Hu describes the night he came to know about his Layoff along with his Manager and other members of the team. Hu who hails from China has been working as a software engineer at Google for the past two years and holds an H-1B visa.&nbsp;
<h3>Layoffs Experience</h3>
In the post, he said that he sensed a problem as soon as he opened his laptop.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I went downstairs and opened up my laptop. That was 21:00. I got a weird email saying 'Your Cloudtop StopInstance operation has begun' and I suddenly recalled I just had the cloudtop maintenance a few days back, it couldn't be a scheduled task, there is definitely something bad happening. I even 'Momaed' (Google's internal search engine) 'what stopinstance means' and I did get the results from the website, so I chose not to believe I was leaving the company," said Hu.&nbsp;

While drafting a farewell mail for his coworkers, he received another email from his direct manager initimating that he too got laid off.
&ldquo;While I was drafting a farewell (basically an advertising) email to people under my skip manager, I received another email from my direct manager. He got laid off too, together with the TL at our neighbor team," he wrote in the post.
&ldquo;As he wrote, 'my hands are shaking as I write this email', my hands were shaking too while reading. He's been at Google for almost 13 years, he founded our team from the first line of code, built everything from scratches, now he had to say goodbye to his baby, with limited corp access except Gmail. I replied to the email instantly, and suddenly the whole team showed up, people were around at night, surprised by this sudden but devastating change. We all know what it means to our team," the former employee added.

As per a post by Social.coop on Mastodon (via Hacker News), a former Google Python team member stated that he is deeply saddened by the decision and called it &ldquo;by far the best job&rdquo; in his 20-year career.&nbsp;
Another Google employee said, "it's a tough day when everyone you work with directly, including your manager, is laid off -- excuse me, &lsquo;had their roles reduced&rsquo;, and you're asked to onboard their replacements, people told to take those very same roles just in a different country who are not any happier about it. (It's almost like capitalism isn't actually good and you shouldn't want to live in the US.)&rdquo;.
As per Free Press Journal, Google is building a new team from scratch in Munich, Germany. The US Python team that reportedly has less than 10 members oversaw a large part of the Python ecosystem at Google. The responsibilities of the team included maintaining a stable version of Python at Google, updating thousands of third-party packages, and developing a typechecker.
As per Business Insider, Google has also made job cuts across its real estate and finance departments. The report mentioned that the finance teams affected include Google's treasury, business services, and revenue cash operations. Google's finance chief, Ruth Porat, sent an email to staff saying the restructuring includes expanding growth to Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin.
Since January the firm had let go of hundreds of workers across multiple teams including its engineering, hardware and assistance departments as Google is looking to ramp up investment and build its artificial intelligence offerings.

Several Google employees are arrested for protesting against the company for working with Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, reported The Washington Post. As per the report, a total of 9 employees in Google&rsquo;s New York and Sunnyvale, California office were arrested after sit-in protests.

The Washington Post quoted a Google Spokesperson and said that the arrested employees had been put on administrative leave and their access to the company&rsquo;s systems was also cut.
&ldquo;Physically impeding other employees&rsquo; work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and we will investigate and take action,&rdquo; Bailey Tomson, a Google spokesperson told The Washington Post. He further added that the law enforcement agencies were engaged to remove them to ensure after safety as even after multiple requests, the protestors refused to leave the company premises.
The employees were protesting the $1.2 billion contract Google has with Israel to provide cloud services and data centres. As per the Washington Post, the protestors said that they would only leave when Google pulls out of the deal. The contract &mdash; known as Nimbus &mdash; was signed by Google in 2021.

Uploading a nude childhood photo on Google Drive cost a man access to his email account for nearly a year and forced him to knock on the doors of the Gujarat High Court.
The high court has issued a notice to Google India Pvt Limited for blocking the email account of the petitioner for "explicit child abuse" after he uploaded on Google Drive a photo of his grandmother bathing him when he was two years old.
The court of Justice Vaibhavi D Nanavati on March 15 issued notices to Google, the Central and state governments returnable on March 26.
The petitioner, Neel Shukla, a computer engineer, uploaded childhood photographs on Google Drive, including a picture of him being bathed by his grandmother as a toddler.
The tech giant blocked Shukla's account in April last year for violating its policy regarding such contents showing "explicit child abuse", his counsel Dipen Desai told the court.
Shukla moved the high court on March 12 after the company failed to resolve the issue through its grievance redressal mechanism, he said.
Desai informed the court that since Google blocked the email account, Shukla has been unable to access his emails and this has caused losses to his business.
The petitioner, in his plea, said, "Google says this amounts to 'explicit child abuse,' and they have blocked everything. I have not been able to access my email and my business (is affected) as everything is blocked." Shukla had approached the Gujarat police and the Centre's Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency for such matters in India, but they also failed to act, and he was forced to seek judicial remedy.
The petitioner also requested an urgent hearing, as he received a notice from Google stating that the data linked to his account would be deleted in April, a year after it was rendered inoperative.&nbsp;

Alphabet Inc-owned Google has joined hands with Election Commission of India (ECI) to prevent spread of false information, promote authorised content and label AI-generated data during the upcoming general elections.
Google India in a blog post on Tuesday said its product features are designed to elevate authoritative information on various election-related topics.
&ldquo;We are collaborating with ECI to enable people to easily discover critical voting information on Google Search - such as how to register and how to vote - in both English and Hindi,&rdquo; Google said.
With more people using artificial intelligence to create content, Google said it is setting up processes to help audiences identify AI-generated content.
&ldquo;As more advertisers leverage the power and opportunity of AI, we want to make sure we continue to provide people with greater transparency and the information they need to make informed decisions. Our ads policies already prohibit the use of manipulated media to mislead people, like deepfakes or doctored content,&rdquo; it said.
Google has already started displaying labels for content created with YouTube generative AI features, like Dream Screen.
&ldquo;Soon, YouTube will begin to require creators to disclose when they&rsquo;ve created realistic altered or synthetic content, and will display a label that indicates for people when they&rsquo;re watching this content,&rdquo; it said.
The blog post further said the company has begun to roll out restrictions on the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses.
It said that for news and information related to the election, YouTube&rsquo;s recommendation system prominently surfaces content from authoritative sources on the YouTube homepage, in search results, and highlights high-quality content from authoritative news sources.
The popular search engine said they have set policies around demonstrably false claims in areas like manipulated content, incitement to violence, hate speech, and harassment, that could undermine democratic processes.
&ldquo;We rely on a combination of human reviewers and machine learning to identify and remove content that violates our policies. Our AI models are enhancing our abuse-fighting efforts, while a dedicated team of local experts across all major Indian languages are working 24X7 to provide relevant context,&rdquo; the blog post said.
Google has set strict policies and restrictions around who can run election-related advertising on its platforms. These include identity verification, certification and authorisation by the ECI, and financier disclosures.
"We take our responsibility for providing high-quality information for these types of queries seriously, and are continuously working to improve our protections," the blog post said.
Google said it has recently joined the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), and pledged to help prevent deceptive AI-generated imagery, audio or video content from interfering with this year&rsquo;s global elections.
Earlier, Google had introduced the Google News Initiative Training Network and the Fact Check Explorer tool to enable newsrooms and journalists deliver reliable, fact-checked updates to debunk misinformation.
Additionally, Google is supporting Shakti, India Election Fact-Checking Collective, which is a consortium of news publishers and fact-checkers in India working together to aid the early detection of online misinformation, including deepfakes, and to create a common repository that news publishers can use to tackle the challenges of misinformation at scale.
&ldquo;Google is committed to working with government, industry, and civil society and surface and connect voters to authoritative and helpful information online,&rdquo; the blog post said.&nbsp;

The Indian Express newspaper, citing government sources, reported that the IT ministry has taken exception to an objectionable response generated by Google's AI after a user asked a question about PM Modi being painted as a fascist.
According to the user who goes by the name Arnab Ray, when Gemini was asked whether PM Modi is a &lsquo;fascist&rsquo;, the platform responded that he has been &ldquo;accused of implementing policies some experts have characterised as fascist,&rdquo; which based on factors like the &ldquo;BJP&rsquo;s Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent, and its use of violence against religious minorities&rdquo;.
However, when it was asked a similar question about former US president Donal Trump, Gemini responded saying, &ldquo;Elections are a complex topic with fast-changing information. To make sure you have the most accurate information, try Google Search.&rdquo;
The user then shared the response on social media X, asking the Indian government to take strict action.
IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar responded to the post saying that it violates the Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT Act and that the response by Gemini also violates multiple sections of Criminal code.
It comes a day after Google announced that it is temporarily halting its Gemini chatbot from generating images of people after users flagged &ldquo;inaccuracies" in historical depictions that it was creating.
Earlier this week, users posted screenshots on social media of Gemini generating historically white-dominated scenes with racially diverse characters.
The users criticised that the AI depicted specific white figures, like the US Founding Fathers, or groups like Nazi-era German soldiers as people of colour.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions,&rdquo; Google said in a statement, posted on X.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately. Gemini&rsquo;s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that&rsquo;s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it&rsquo;s missing the mark here.&rdquo;
