Gig employment in India is expanding as it witnessed a whopping 184% rise in white-collar gig jobs this year compared to the previous year. Hiring platform Foundit also revealed that the number of gig workers has expanded by 21% over the same period. At the centre of this gig boom is the Information Technology sector, said the report.
<h3>Hiring in gig economy</h3>
As per the hiring agency, the share of IT software in the gig economy has nearly doubled, jumping from 22% in March 2023 to a dominant 46% in March 2024. On a month on month basis, the overall hiring activity picked up with a 3% increase compared to the last month. However, the hiring declined by 4% compared to the previous year.

The demand for Coder and IT consultant positions rose 18% while the demand for content creators rose 8% and Trainer position saw 4% rise. Sector wise after IT sector which saw a 7% rise, BPO/ITES saw a rise of 2% in March 2024 from -2% in February 2024 in BPO/ITES. This was followed by Manufacturing and Production at 6%, Telecom/ISP at 2% and Healthcare at -3%.
Citywise, Bengaluru and Chennai saw 0.02% while Hyderabad and Kolkatta saw 0.5% rise. Meanwhile, hiring went down by 3% in Ahmedabad and it remained stagnant Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

Aditya Sharma, a resident of Rajasthan, was handed his food delivery by a gig workers who was making the deliveries on his bicycle worker. Curious, Sharma asked more about him.  Durga Meena told Sharma that he was working as a gig worker for Zomato after losing his job as a teacher. Meena who holds a degree in BCom was teaching for 12-years when he lost his job due to the Covid-19 pandemic layoffs. Making the rounds on his bicycle, Meena hardly has any time to rest. He earns around Rs 10,000 rupees a month.  
When Sharma offered Meena help, the latter said he needs just enough for the down payment and world return all the money.  
Sharma appealed to the Twitter community to help raise funds for a motorbike for meena which will ease his work. The Twitter community came through for Meena. Within 24-hours enough money had been raised for him to buy a bike.

This is a ten minute-long gamble with a gig workers life tweeted Congress MP Karti Chidambaram as he reacted to Zomato's newest delivery offering of 10 minute food at your doorstep. This is not the first time the Sivagangai MP has raised concerns over safety , need for regulation and insurance requirements for gig workers. In Parliament on Monday, Karti P Chidambaram stated that gig economy-based companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Uber and OLA are valued in millions and that their valuation was based on the ‘Turn Around Time’ principle, which is basically the shortest time taken to deliver.
“We have delivery companies which promise delivery of food or other products within 10min or 30 min, but the delivery is done by workers who are not employees of the company, who are driving a personal two-wheeler to do a commercial delivery while carrying a huge weight with them," said the MP.
Karti wrote to Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari as well as app-based companies. He raised the possibility of gig workers being deprived of insurance coverage as they use personal vehicles for commercial purposes.In his letter to Yadav, the Congress MP said it was a matter of concern that many companies that employ gig workers refuse to accord them the status of ‘employee’ and “instead utilise a ridiculous thesaurus of words to abdicate responsibilities towards these workers."
