The protesters demanded authorities drop the bill on "transparency of foreign funding," which critics said mirrors a law used in Russia to force media and dissenting groups to shut down.

Georgia's ruling party announced on March 9, 2023, that it was halting plans to introduce a controversial "foreign agent" bill after mass rallies against the legislation seen as reminiscent of Russian legislation used to silence critics.
The announcement came after two days of large-scale protests, including a rally on Women's Day that saw Georgian police fire water cannon and tear gas at thousands of demonstrators and issue a dispersal order. Massive crowds had gathered in front of the parliament building in central Tbilisi on Wednesday, holding EU and Georgian flags, and chanting "no to the Russian law".

Ruling party Georgian Dream said in a statement the bill had been "represented in a bad light and in a misleading way," adding that it would launch public consultations to "better explain" the law's purpose after announcing its withdrawal.

Concern has been growing that the ex-Soviet nation, which aspires to join the EU and NATO, is taking an authoritarian turn and maintaining links with Moscow.

Scuffles broke out in the Georgian parliament on Thursday, while protesters gathered outside as lawmakers debated a new controversial law regarding funding of media outlets.
The law initiated by a "People's Power" faction requires media outlets and nongovernmental organisations that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from foreign sources to register as "agents of foreign influence."
International organisations have voiced concern over the draft law saying it is against Georgia's democratic development.

Arrests of 36 demonstrators took place during the rally outside the Parliament building.
Inside the Parliament, the start of the discussion was postponed for several hours when a fight broke out among lawmakers.

Three masked men with guns attacked the Indian-American family when it arrived home from work, police said. Shots were fired when Pinal Patel confronted the masked men.

After deputies arrived, they found Pinal, his wife Rupalben Patel, and daughter Bhakti Patel, suffering from gunshot wounds in the driveway of their home, a police statement said. All three were transported to Atrium Health where Pinal was later pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Luann Stone, it said.
Rupalben and her daughter are stated to be in stable condition.
The three masked individuals then ran to a dark in colour vehicle waiting across the street occupied by a fourth person, the statement said. The individuals then fled the scene and no items were reported to have been taken from the family, it said.
Meanwhile, on 22 January, a 23-year-old Indian student named Devsish Nandepu was shot dead during a robbery in Chicago.
