G7 leaders offered their full support for Israel on Sunday following an attack by Iran, and said they were ready to "take further measures" in response to "further destabilising initiatives".
In a statement following a video meeting, the leaders of the Group of Seven powers said they "unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran's direct and unprecedented attack against Israel".
"We express our full solidarity and support to Israel and its people and reaffirm our commitment towards its security," they said, in the statement published by the Italian G7 presidency.
"With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilisation of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided.
"We will continue to work to stabilise the situation and avoid further escalation.
"In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilising initiatives."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a separate statement: "Going forward we will reflect on additional sanctions against Iran in close cooperation with our partners. Specifically on its drone and missile programmes."
Iran launched the attack, its first ever to directly target Israeli territory, in retaliation for a deadly air strike widely blamed on Israel that destroyed its consular building in Syria's capital early this month.
The attack came as the Israel-Hamas war raged in besieged Gaza.
The G7 -- which groups the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada -- also said Sunday they would step up efforts to end that crisis.
"We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need," they said.
The Israel-Hamas war began with an unprecedented October 7 attack by the militant group against Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.
Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,729 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Price cap on Russian oil by G7: Russia welcomes India's decision

Russia has said that it welcomes India's decision to not support the price cap on Russian oil announced by the G7 and their allies. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak made the statement during his meeting with India's Ambassador to Russia, Pavan Kapoor on December 9
"The Deputy Prime Minister welcomed India's decision not to support the price cap on Russian oil, which was imposed on December 5 by the G7 countries and their allies," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Novak stressed that Russia is responsibly fulfilling its contractual obligations for the supply of energy resources, diversifying energy exports to the countries in the east and south amid the energy crisis. Earlier in September, G7 nations agreed to impose a price cap on oil imports from Russia.
According to the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russian oil imports to India rose to 16.35 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2022.
Notably, India continues to import oil from Russia despite the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv. The Ministry of External Affairs has defended the decision of purchasing Russian oil.

A $60 price cap set on Russian oil agreed by the EU, G7 and Australia is not "serious" because it is "quite comfortable" for Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday.
"Russia has already caused huge losses to all countries of the world by deliberately destabilizing the energy market," he argued in his nightly address, describing the decision on the price cap as "a weak position".
It is "only a matter of time when stronger tools will have to be used anyway", Zelenskyy added. "It is a pity that this time will be lost.
"The logic is obvious: if the price limit for Russian oil is $60 instead of, for example, $30, which Poland and the Baltic countries talked about, then the Russian budget will receive about a hundred billion dollars a year...
"This money will also be used to further destabilize precisely those countries that are now trying to avoid big decisions."
During the negotiations on where to set the price cap, Poland in particular tried to hold out for a lower level of $30, before finally agreeing on Friday to the higher ceiling. G7, EU agree oil price cap to reduce Russia war funding

The price cap is designed to make it harder to bypass the sanctions by selling beyond the EU.

The G7 and EU on Friday agreed a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil in an attempt to deny the Kremlin of war resources, as President Vladimir Putin said more strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure were "inevitable".
The price cap, previously negotiated on a political level between the G7 group of wealthy democracies and the European Union, will come into effect with an EU embargo on Russian crude oil from Monday.
The embargo will prevent shipments of Russian crude by tanker vessel to the EU, which account for two thirds of imports, potentially depriving Russia's war chest of billions of euros.
"The G7 and Australia... reached consensus on a maximum price of 60 US dollars per barrel for seaborne Russian origin crude oil in line with" the European Union, the G7 said in a statement.

The G7 said it was delivering on its vow "to prevent Russia from profiting from its war of aggression against Ukraine, to support stability in global energy markets and to minimise negative economic spillovers of Russia's war of aggression".
Poland had refused to back the price cap plan over concerns the ceiling was too high, before its ambassador to the bloc confirmed Warsaw's agreement on Friday evening.
The price cap is designed to make it harder to bypass the sanctions by selling beyond the EU.
Poland's ambassador Andrzej Sados also said Brussels would take into account Polish and Baltic state suggestions for a "painful and expensive" ninth round of sanctions against Moscow.
The White House described the deal as "welcome news", saying a price cap will help limit Putin's ability to fund the Kremlin's "war machine".

Russia followed up the missile launches at the start of the week with further aerial attacks on Tuesday.
Officials in Ukraine's western region of Lviv said at least three Russian missiles fired Tuesday targeted energy infrastructure, forcing Kyiv to ask people to cut their electricity usage and switch off appliances at night.
Russia's defence ministry confirmed Tuesday's renewed attacks, saying it had carried out massive strikes using long-range and high-precision weapons and that "all assigned targets were hit".

Given that India is maintaining neutrality on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a Bloomberg report on Wednesday noted that Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of Seven or G7 summit that it will host June.
People familiar with the development told Bloomberg that Germany is set to include Senegal, South Africa and Indonesia as guests, but India, which was on the list drawn before the Ukraine war, remains under consideration.
India was among the more than 50 nations that abstained from a United Nations vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow. India has said it will continue to buy Russian oil that has been offered at significantly discounted rate.
