Germany may not invite PM Modi as G7 guest over Russian stance

Given that India is maintaining neutrality on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a Bloomberg report on Wednesday noted that Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of Seven or G7 summit that it will host June.

People familiar with the development told Bloomberg that Germany is set to include Senegal, South Africa and Indonesia as guests, but India, which was on the list drawn before the Ukraine war, remains under consideration.

India was among the more than 50 nations that abstained from a United Nations vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow. India has said it will continue to buy Russian oil that has been offered at significantly discounted rate. Earlier reports had said that the Modi govt also plans to boost exports to Russia by an additional $2 billion as the two nations work out a payment system in local currencies to continue trade.

Germany itself has come under criticism from Ukraine and Poland for its continuing reliance on Russian energy imports.
