The India-Japan global partnership is based on shared democratic values and respect for the rule of law and promotes peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday after holding wide-ranging talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida.
The two prime ministers largely focused on significantly boosting cooperation in areas of clean energy, semiconductors and co-development of military hardware besides exploring ways to deal with regional security challenges amidst the increasing assertiveness of China.
During the talks, Modi conveyed to Kishida that one of the areas of very strong cooperation between India and Japan could be co-innovation, co-design co-creation in the defence manufacturing sector, officials said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the country's ban on same-sex marriage is not discriminatory, insisting that constitutional freedom of marriage only envisions heterosexual unions, a comment that triggered criticism he is backtracking despite his recent apology and meeting with LGBTQ people.
Kishida's governing Liberal Democratic Party, known for its conservative family values and reluctance to promote gender equality and sexual diversity, is virtually the main opposition to legalisation of same-sex marriage and other measures of equality for LGBTQ people.
Asked by an opposition lawmaker at Tuesday's parliamentary budget committee if he thinks a same-sex marriage ban constitutes discrimination, Kishida said &ldquo;I don't think disallowing same-sex couples to marry is unjust discrimination by the state." His comment sparked criticism from opposition lawmakers and LGBTQ activists, who questioned whether Kishida was backpedalling to show consideration to ultra-conservatives in his party who oppose sexual diversity.
Kishida said after meeting with LGBTQ representatives in mid-February that he &ldquo;strongly felt the need for discussion" and would consider the voices of the people and in parliament, as well as rulings in several ongoing lawsuits and measures in local municipalities.
Kishida on Wednesday repeated his position that a same-sex marriage ban &ldquo;is not unconstitutional&rdquo; and denied that he is prejudiced. &ldquo;I believe I do not have a sense of discrimination (on the issue),&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;And I have never stated I'm against it.&rdquo; Former Kishida aide Masayoshi Arai's discriminatory remarks last month about LGBTQ people ignited nationwide outrage and prompted a renewed push for the Kishida government to enact an anti-discrimination law even after the official was sacked.
Arai told reporters in early February that he wouldn't want to live next to LGBTQ people and that citizens would flee Japan if same-sex marriages were allowed.
Toru Miyamoto, a Japanese Communist Party lawmaker, asked Kishida on Wednesday about his meeting with LGBTQ representatives and whether he really meant his apology.
Miyamoto also noted recent media surveys and local government initiatives introducing non-binding same-sex partnerships, and told Kishida that support for same-sex marriage now represents the majority of public opinion.
Since the controversy erupted, Kishida appointed a special aide for LGBTQ issues and instructed his party to prepare legislation to promote understanding for LGBTQ rights.
Activists are now urging the government to enact anti-discrimination legislation before Japan hosts a summit of the Group of Seven industrialised nations in May in Hiroshima. Japan is the only G-7 member that has not recognized same-sex marriage or enacted an anti-discrimination law for LGBTQ people.
But his own previous comments &mdash; including that allowing same-sex marriage would change society and family values and must be carefully considered &mdash; were also seen as an indication of his reluctance to promote equal rights for LGBTQ people despite his pledge to create an inclusive and diverse society.
Campaigns for equal rights for LGBTQ people have been stonewalled especially by conservatives in Kishida's governing Liberal Democratic Party. An attempt to enact an equality awareness promotion law ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics was quashed by the party.
While surveys show growing public support for same-sex unions, government efforts to support sexual diversity have been slow in Japan and legal protections are still lacking for LGBTQ people. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people often face discrimination at school, work and home in Japan, causing many to hide their sexual identities

Seiji Kihara, an official who works as an aide to the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida has apologised after being scolded by his mother for standing with his hands in his pockets during an official trip to the USA.
A video of Kihara surfaced online where he can be seen standing in the background as PM Kishida briefs the media in Washington D.C.
Kihara faced backlash from social media users for his supposedly casual posture during a formal briefing.
The aide revealed in a YouTube political commentary video appearance that his mother scolded him over the phone after reading comments about how he was "disgracing his parents" by standing with his hands in his pockets.&nbsp; According to Kihara, his mother was "ashamed" of him and suggested that he "sew up his pockets".

In the video, Kihara is seen standing with his hands in his pockets, looking on as the prime minister speaks. Then realising that he is on camera, Kihara adjusts his pants and then folds his hands in front of him.
Defending his actions, Kihara in his YouTube appearance said that he is someone who walks with his hands in his pockets and during that particular instance he was actually listening intently to the prime minister so that he could come up with the best way to convey the US-Japan summit.
Kihara would not have been scolded by his mother nor would he have faced backlash online if newspaper Asahi Shimbun had not posted the clip of the PM's briefing on its Twitter.
In Japan, it is considered rude or impolite in certain social or professional situations to stand in a casual manner as Kihara was.
The incident in question occurred on January 13, 2023 during the Japanese Prime Minister's visit to USA as part of a five-country trip to Europe and North America.&nbsp;

Kenya Akiba, minister in charge of reconstruction of Fukushima and other disaster-hit areas, has faced allegations of mishandling political and election funds and of having murky ties to the Unification Church, whose cozy political ties and practices surrounding followers' huge donations have raised controversy.
&ldquo;I have made a heavy decision and submitted my resignation," Akiba told reporters after meeting with Kishida. He repeated that he has never violated any law in relation to the issues for which he has been criticised.

Kishida tapped former reconstruction minister Hiromichi Watanabe as a replacement. Watanabe's appointment was to be official after a palace ceremony.

Jun Azumi, a senior lawmaker of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan who has criticized Kishida as making other slow decisions on his staff, said Monday that &ldquo;four (dismissals) are too much and the prime minister should be held responsible over their appointment".

Kishida on Tuesday also replaced parliamentary vice-minister for internal affairs Mio Sugita, who has made past derogatory remarks against sexual and ethnic minorities. Sugita said in 2018 same-sex couples don't produce children and are &ldquo;unproductive&rdquo; and in 2016 scoffed at those wearing traditional ethnic costumes at an United Nations' committee meeting as &ldquo;middle-aged women in costume play&rdquo;.
Kishida said Sugita submitted her resignation saying that she cannot bend her personal beliefs while she retracted some of her earlier comments.
Kishida had been seen as a stable choice as leader after his victory in the July vote, but his popularity has plummeted over the Liberal Democratic Party's widespread church ties that surfaced after the assassination of former leader Shinzo Abe.
The suspected shooter told investigators his mother's donations to the church bankrupted his family and ruined his life. He reportedly targeted Abe as a key figure behind the church's ties to Japan's LDP-led government.
Revelations have since surfaced about many LDP lawmakers having friendly ties to the church, which has been criticised as allegedly brainwashing followers into making huge donations. A new law passed by Parliament earlier this month aims to restrict such activities.
Economic Revitalization Minister Daishiro Yamagiwa quit on Oct 24 after failing to explain his ties to the Unification Church. In early November, Justice Minister Yasuhiro Hanashi resigned after remarking that his job is low profile and only makes news when he signs the death penalty.&nbsp;

The internal affairs minister in Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government was forced into resigning over funding problems on Sunday, in a blow to the scandal-prone Cabinet that has already lost two ministers in one month.
Minoru Terada has been under fire over several accounting and funding irregularities. In one, he acknowledged that one of his support groups submitted accounting records carrying a dead person's signature.
&ldquo;I apologize for the series of resignations," Kishida said. &ldquo;I'm aware of my heavy responsibility for their appointment.&rdquo; On Monday, Kishida pledged to regain public trust. &ldquo;I will fulfill my responsibility by pursuing important policies that are piling up,&rdquo; he said and pledged to ensure clarity on the issue of money and politics.
He appointed Takeaki Matsumoto, a former foreign minister, as Terada's replacement.

Opposition lawmakers said funding problems for the internal affairs minister, one of whose jobs is to oversee political funds, are serious and demanded his resignation.
&ldquo;His credibility was already lost and the resignation came too late, and calls Prime Minister Kishida's judgment and leadership into question," Kenta Izumi, head of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, said in a statement.
Political watchers also said Kishida's lack of decisiveness comes from his weak footing within the governing party. They say Kishida, whose faction ranks fourth-biggest in the party, needs to listen to the voices of three bigger factions including one led by the assassinated leader Shinzo Abe and heavyweights like Taro Aso.
Kishida chose Terada's replacement from Aso's faction.
Recent media surveys showed the majority of respondents supported Terada's resignation, while support ratings for Kishida's government fell to just above 30%, lowest since he took office in October 2021.

"The ballistic missile launched by North Korea is believed to have landed in our EEZ (exclusive economic zone) west of Hokkaido," Kishida told reporters in Bangkok, where he is attending a regional summit.
The EEZ extends up to 200 nautical miles from Japan's coastline, beyond the limits of its territorial waters. The Japanese defence ministry had earlier said the missile was "ICBM-class".

It was North Korea's second launch in two days, as the isolated state continues a record-breaking blitz that has sent fears of a nuclear test soaring.
"We made a stern protest to North Korea. They're repeating provocative actions with unprecedented frequency. We strongly state again that this is absolutely unacceptable," Kishida said.
"Japan, the US and South Korea must coordinate closely to work toward the complete denuclearisation of North Korea," he added.
On Thursday evening, Kishida said he had expressed "serious concerns" to Chinese President Xi Jinping on security issues including North Korea after the two leaders held their first face-to-face talks.
"On North Korea, I expressed our expectation that China will play a role, including in the UN security council," Kishida told reporters after Thursday's talks with Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Thailand.
