Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Bangladesh after the government announced a steep increase in fuel prices. The 52 percent hike, according to Bangladeshi media, is the "highest" since the country gained independence.

The increase was announced by the Sheikh Hasina government on Friday, after which the cost of petrol has increased by 51.2 percent to 130 taka (roughly ₹108) per litre, the cost of 95-octane petrol has increased by 51.7 percent to 135 taka (roughly ₹113), and the cost of diesel and kerosene has increased by 42.5 percent.
According to a statement from the power, energy, and mineral resources ministry, the hike in fuel prices was unavoidable given current global market conditions. It also pointed out that the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation had lost more than 8 billion taka (about ₹667 crore) on oil sales in the six months leading up to July.

Several videos surfaced on social media showing people queuing up at fuel stations late at night to fill up their tanks.
Although Bangladesh's $416 billion economy has been one of the fastest-growing in the world for years, soaring energy and food prices have increased its import bill, forcing the government to seek loans from global lending agencies such the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"The new prices will not seem tolerable to everyone. But we had no other choice. People have to be patient," Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources told reporters on Saturday. He said prices would be adjusted if global prices fall.

Bangladesh has been taking measures in recent weeks to ease pressure on its declining foreign currency reserves. Last month, fuel prices were raised by more than 50%.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Schools in Bangladesh will close an additional day each week and government offices and banks will shorten their work days by an hour to reduce electricity usage amid concerns over rising fuel prices and the impact of the Ukraine war.
The reduced hours take effect Wednesday.
In Bangladesh, most schools are closed on Fridays, but now will also close on Saturdays, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said Monday.
He said government offices and banks will cut their workdays to seven hours from the previous eight hours, but private offices will be allowed to set their own schedules.
Supply disruptions caused by the Ukraine war have led to soaring world prices for energy and food.
Bangladesh has been taking measures in recent weeks to ease pressure on its declining foreign currency reserves. Last month, fuel prices were raised by more than 50%.
The government says it is exploring options to get cheaper fuel from Russia under a special arrangement.
The decision has drawn criticism, but the government said it is necessary to cut losses amid rising international fuel prices.
Small street protests against the higher prices have taken place in recent weeks, and the government said domestic prices will be adjusted after international prices ease.
The country has been suffering more frequent power cuts after the government suspended operations of all diesel-run power plants, reducing daily electricity production by 1,000 megawatts.
But authorities have promised to continue supplying power to industrial zones to help support the country's $416 billion economy, which has been growing rapidly over the last decade.
The country's opposition has accused the government of failing to control corruption and eliminate losses in the energy sector.
In July, Bangladesh sought an unspecified loan from the International Monetary Fund, becoming the third country in South Asia to do so recently after Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Rahul Anand, division chief in the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, said in a recent consultation that Bangladesh was not in a crisis situation and its external position was &ldquo;very different from several countries in the region.&rdquo; &ldquo;Bangladesh has a low risk of debt distress and is very different from Sri Lanka,&rdquo; he was quoted as saying by the Dhaka-based The Business Standard Daily.
Bangladesh's foreign currency reserves have dwindled to around $40 billion.

"Though there was an agreement between oil companies and dealer associations that the dealer margins will be revised every six months, it has not been revised since 2017. The prices of fuel have almost doubled since 2017, hence the working capital in business has doubled leading to additional loans and bank interests thereupon," the association said in a statement.
The protest is unlikely to disrupt supplies as industry officials said that petrol pumps don't need daily refills and their storage tanks store enough supplies to last couple of days. 
"Evaporation losses have increased proportionately. Also, the overhead expenses like bank charges, electricity bills, salaries etc. have increased manifold during the last five years. Our constant demand to revise dealer commission has been overlooked by the OMCs (Oil Marketing Companies). By doing so, OMCs are making their own network financially unviable," the statement said.
The 22 states where the dealers will be on protest are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim and North Bengal.

Flagging higher fuel prices in many opposition-ruled states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged oppn-ruled states to reduce VAT in "national interest" to benefit the common man and work in the spirit of cooperative federalism in this time of global crisis.
During his interaction with chief ministers through video conferencing, Modi said that the Centre had reduced excise duty to reduce the burden of prices of petrol and diesel on the people last November. He said the Centre had urged states to reduce taxes and transfer the benefit to the citizens.
PM listed the fuel prices in cities across the country and flagged higher rates in states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu.

The price of fuel has skyrocketed since the results of the 5 state assembly elections in the country.
On Wednesday, petrol in the national capital retails at Rs 105.41 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 96.67. In Mumbai, one litre of petrol is being retailed for Rs 120.51 and a litre of diesel is being retailed for at Rs 104.77.
India imports 85 per cent of its oil needs and the Russia-Ukraine invasion and escalating sanctions have hampered the oil flow across the globe.

"Amazon now controls access to such a huge share of the online market that any business really that makes or sells anything, they have to go through Amazon in order to reach consumers, and that means that Amazon effectively is like a big tollbooth for these businesses. Amazon's third-party marketplace, where independent merchants list millions of their products, is a huge part of its business. It has about 2 million sellers, and more than half the goods sold on Amazon.com come from these sellers.

With the prices of petrol and diesel along with LPG, CNG continue to surge, state units of several parties across the country are taking to the streets.
The states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, J&K and Punjab saw protests against rising fuel prices on Thursday.
More than a thousand DMK protestors were arrested in Puducherry when they tried to blockade the assembly against the hike. Tamil Nadu Congress also took to the streets to protest fuel prices.
Meanwhile, the Kerala unit of Congress held a protest march against fuel price hike in Trivandrum.
The Punjab Congress also protested against the skyrocketing fuel rates in the presence of Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Congress workers protested in Jammu & Kashmir as well over fuel price hike.

Fuel prices have been hiked across the country with over ₹10 hike in the last 17 days.

The pain of rising prices is continuing to intensify as petrol and diesel rates were hiked for the 13th time in the last 15 days.
Petrol and diesel prices went up by 80 paise per litre each in Delhi on April 5. In Mumbai, the increase was 85 paise per litre.
After the latest hike, petrol prices have reached Rs 104.61/l in Delhi, and Rs 119.67/l in Mumbai. Diesel prices have hit Rs 95.87/l in Delhi, and Rs 103.92/l in Mumbai.
With the latest increase, the total price hike in 15 days amounts to Rs 9.2 per litre.

Opposition members, including those from the Congress and Trinamool Congress, on Thursday walked out from the Lok Sabha to protest against the continuous hike in fuel prices.
Petrol and diesel prices were on Thursday hiked by 80 paise a litre each, taking the total increase in rates in the last 10 days to Rs 6.40 per litre.
As soon as the House assembled, opposition members started the protest against the hike in fuel prices and demanded that it should be withdrawn.
Raising slogans and carrying placards, the members shouted slogans against the Modi government for its alleged “anti-people” policies.
However, Speaker Om Birla said he had given them opportunities on four occasions in the past in this session to raise the issue and hence they should go back to their seats and take part in the proceedings.
The opposition members ignored the Speaker's plea and continued their protest.
Apart from Congress and Trinamool Congress, those who took part in the protests include DMK, CPI, CPI-M and TRS members.
TRS members were raising some placards seeking justice for Scheduled Castes communities.
After nearly 30 minutes, some members, including Congress and Trinamool Congress, staged a walk out in protest.
Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 101.81 per litre as against Rs 101.01 previously while diesel rates have gone up from Rs 92.27 per litre to Rs 93.07, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers.
Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending upon the incidence of local taxation.
This is the ninth increase in prices since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22.
In all, petrol and diesel prices have gone up by Rs 6.40 per litre each.

As Indians battle with burning high fuel prices, editorji looks at how petrol prices have been in the neighboring countries so far.
While the average price of petrol in the domestic currency (Indian rupee) terms has been 102.86 in the March quarter in India, the same value was INR 63.09 in Pakistan. 
In comparison to this, Nepal had an average petrol price of INR 97.20, Bangladesh INR 78.96 and Sri Lanka INR 77.12 in the same quarter.
China, however, sold petrol on a bit expensive side when compared to India and rest of the South Asian countries. March quarter average petrol price in China was INR 111.49.
We also take a look at the distribution of the petrol cost paid by an individual, how much of it goes to the government as tax and what is the real cost of fuel in the overall price.
As per the latest data available on the Indian Oil Corporation website, which is on the basis of petrol price of Rs 95.41 a litre, the base price or the cost of petrol in the total price is just Rs 47.99. Simply, the actual cost of petrol is just 50% of what we pay. 
Excise duty, which is charged by the central government, stood at Rs 27.90 (around 30% of total petrol price) whereas VAT, which is charged by the state governments was Rs 15.50 (over 16%).
Dealer commission was just Rs 3.77 per litre.
Petrol prices have been on a rise, as they surge seven times in the last eight days. 
Petrol price in the national capital had last crossed Rs 100 a litre mark on July 7, 2021, and went on to touch an all-time high of Rs 110.04 before the Modi government on November 4 reduced excise duty on auto fuels. Most states matched that cut with a reduction in local sales tax or VAT.
Moody's Investors Services last week stated that state retailers together lost around USD 2.25 billion (Rs 19,000 crore) in revenue for keeping petrol and diesel prices on hold during the election period.
CRISIL Research said a Rs 15-20 a litre hike if the average crude oil price rises to USD 110-120. The total increase in the petrol prices since last week is Rs 4.80 per litre. While Brent crude futures were trading at $111 per barrel.

This is the fifth increase in prices since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22. On all the previous four occasions, prices had been increased by 80 paise a litre - the steepest single-day rise since the daily price revision was introduced in June 2017.

Petrol and diesel prices, which have been on a freeze for the past four months in view of assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh, need to be increased by over Rs 12 per litre by March 16 for fuel retailers to break even.
With international oil prices - on which domestic fuel retails are directly benchmarked - spiking in the last two months, state-owned fuel retailers "need a massive price hike of Rs 12.1 per litre on or before March 16, 2022, just to breakeven and a price hike of Rs 15.1 is required" after including margins for oil firms, ICICI Securities said in a report.
The basket of crude oil India buys rose to $117.39 per barrel on March 3, the highest since 2012. This compares to an average of $81.5 per barrel price of the Indian basket of crude oil at the time of freezing of petrol and diesel prices in early November last year.
"With state elections getting over next week, we expect daily fuel price hikes to restart across both gasoline and diesel," JP Morgan said in a report.
The seventh and final phase of polling for the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly is on March 7 and the counting of votes is slated for March 10.Oil prices have been on the boil ever since Russia put its forces on the Ukraine border last month. They spiked after it invaded the central Asian nation on fears that oil and gas supplies from energy giant Russia could be disrupted, either by the conflict in Ukraine or retaliatory western sanctions.

India also buys 2.5 million tonnes of LNG a year from Gazprom of Russia.
While supplies at the moment seem to be of little worry for India, it is the prices that are a cause of concern.
Domestic fuel prices - which are directly linked to international oil prices as India imports 85 per cent of its oil needs - have not been revised for a record 120 days in a row.
Rates are supposed to be revised on a daily basis but state-owned fuel retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL froze rates on sooner did electioneering to elect a new government in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and three other states started.
Petrol costs Rs 95.41 a litre in Delhi and diesel is priced at Rs 86.67. This price is after accounting for the excise duty cut and a reduction in the VAT rate by the state government.

Most of the BJP-ruled states now have a sub-Rs 100 petrol price tag as they have been further reduced by as much as Rs 8.7 per litre and diesel by Rs 9.52 through a reduction in VAT.
The Union government had on Wednesday cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre. This announcement was matched by 22 states and Union Territories cutting Value-Added Tax rates in different proportions.
However, there are 14 States/UTs which have not undertaken any reduction in VAT. These states include Congress and its allies ruled Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. AAP-ruled Delhi, TMC-governed West Bengal, Left-ruled Kerala, BJD-governed Odisha, TRS-led Telengana and YSR Congress-ruled Andhra Pradesh. 
The costliest petrol is sold in Congress-controlled Rajasthan at Rs 111.10 per litre (Jaipur).
The most reduction in the Petrol prices has been in UT of Ladakh, followed by Karnataka and Puducherry. The prices of Petrol in these UTs/state have come down by Rs 13.43, Rs 13.35 and Rs 12.85 respectively.
For Diesel, the most reduction has been undertaken by UT of Ladakh, leading to price coming down by Rs 19.61 per litre there, followed by Karnataka and Puducherry.

Most of the BJP-ruled states now have a sub-Rs 100 petrol price tag as they have been further reduced by as much as&nbsp;Rs 8.7 per litre and diesel by&nbsp;Rs 9.52 through a reduction in VAT.
The Union government had on Wednesday cut excise duty on petrol by&nbsp;Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by&nbsp;Rs 10 a litre. This announcement was matched by 22 states and Union Territories cutting Value-Added Tax rates in different proportions.
However, there are 14 States/UTs which have not undertaken any reduction in VAT. These states include Congress and its allies ruled Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. AAP-ruled Delhi, TMC-governed West Bengal, Left-ruled Kerala, BJD-governed Odisha, TRS-led Telengana and YSR Congress-ruled Andhra Pradesh.&nbsp;
The costliest petrol is sold in Congress-controlled&nbsp;Rajasthan at Rs 111.10 per litre (Jaipur).
The most reduction in the Petrol prices has been in UT of Ladakh, followed by Karnataka and Puducherry. The prices of Petrol in these UTs/state have come down by Rs 13.43, Rs 13.35 and Rs 12.85 respectively.
For Diesel, the most reduction has been undertaken by UT of Ladakh, leading to price coming down by Rs 19.61 per litre there, followed by Karnataka and Puducherry.

The price of petrol in Delhi rose to its highest-ever level of Rs 109.34 per litre and Rs 115.15 per litre in Mumbai while diesel now costs Rs 98.07 per litre in Delhi and Rs 106.23 in Mumbai.
Depending on the twin factors of local taxes and cost of transportation, petrol prices have even crossed the 120 per litre mark in several districts of Madhya Pradesh and border towns of Ganganagar and Hanumangarh in Rajasthan.

The government on Thursday hiked by 62 per cent the price of natural gas that is used to produce electricity, make fertilisers and turned into CNG to use as fuel in automobiles and cooking gas for household kitchens.
This is the first increase in rates since April 2019 and comes on back of firming benchmark international prices but does not reflect the spurt in spot or current price of liquefied natural gas (LNG) witnessed during the last couple of weeks.
The oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) said the rates paid for gas produced from fields given to state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) will be USD 2.90 per million British thermal unit for the six-month period beginning April 1.
Simultaneously, the price for gas produced from difficult fields such as deepsea, which is based on a different formula, was hiked to USD 6.13 per mmBtu from the current USD 3.62 per mmBtu.
This is the maximum price that Reliance Industries Ltd and its partner BP plc are entitled to for the gas they produce from deepsea blocks such as KG-D6.
The increase in gas price is likely to result in a 10-11 per cent rise in CNG and piped cooking gas rates in cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, industry sources said.
It will also lead a rise in cost of generating electricity but consumers may not feel any major pinch as the share of power produced from gas is very low.
Similarly, the cost of producing fertiliser will also go up but as the government subsidises the crop nutrient, an increase in rates is unlikely.
