India's fuel consumption has hit a seven month high in December to about 20.054 million metric tons. As per Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry, total consumption &nbsp;in December rose by 6.2% from 18.89 million tons in November.
Compared with the same period a year earlier, it was up around 2.6%.
<h3>Fuel Consumption</h3>
Sales of diesel which is primarily used by trucks and commercially-run passenger vehicles rose by 0.9% month-on-month to 7.60 million tons while the gasoline sales dropped 4.5% from the previous month to 2.99 million tons.

The sales of bitumen which is used for making roads rose by 12.9% from November, while fuel oil use increased by 9.6% in December. Long queues at petrol pumps were reported from several cities across India due to fuel shortage following protests and strike by truck drivers.&nbsp;
While in some cities people rushed to fill up their tanks in anticipation of a fuel shortage, there were reports of petrol and diesel running out at some some filling stations.&nbsp;
Truck drivers are protesting against a new law on hit and run accidents.&nbsp;
Under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the colonial era Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.
Truckers held protests against the provision in the new penal law on hit-and-run law road accident cases in parts of Rajasthan on Monday and movement of trucks and private bus operators were affected by it.
Operation of roadways buses was also affected which resumed after police intervention.
Truck drivers staged 'rasta roko' protests at many places in Maharashtra on Monday against the provision in the new penal law regarding hit-and-run road accident cases involving motorists.
The protests raised the spectre of a shortage of fuel at some places. Some petrol pumps in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district have already stopped functioning, an office-bearer of the petroleum dealers association said.
In Navi Mumbai, a policeman was injured when a group of truckers attacked him in Nerul in the morning hours, prompting police to use force to disperse the mob gathered on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, an official said.
Truck drivers briefly blocked traffic on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Mira Bhayandar area in Thane district and hurled stones at police personnel, leaving a policeman injured. A police vehicle was damaged in stone pelting.
Stones were also thrown at some passing vehicles, he said.
Road blockade protests were also held in Solapur, Kolhapur, Nagpur and Gondia districts, officials said, adding that the situation in Navi Mumbai and other places is under control.
In Nashik district in north Maharashtra, tanker drivers stopped work and parked more than 1,000 vehicles in Panewadi village, home to fuel depots, on Monday.
Panewadi village in Nandgaon taluka has fuel depots of Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Indian Oil and LPG filling stations, and fuel from these depots is transported to various parts of the state.

In July, India witnessed a rise in petrol consumption by 3.8% compared to last year, while diesel demand fell 4.3% due to monsoon rains impacting agriculture and vehicular movements. Jet fuel demand surged 10.3% with increasing passenger traffic

India's petrol consumption rose in July, but diesel demand fell owing to monsoon rains and floods in some parts of the country, preliminary industry data showed on Tuesday.
Consumption of diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country accounting for about two-fifths of the demand, fell 4.3% to 6.15 million tonne in July compared to the year-ago period.
Consumption had fallen by a steep 15% in first half of July but picked up in the second fortnight.
Diesel sales typically fall in monsoon months as rains lower demand in the agriculture sector which uses the fuel for irrigation, harvesting and transportation. Also, rains slow vehicular movements.
Consumption of diesel had soared 6.7% and 9.3% in April and May, respectively as agriculture demand picked up and cars yanked up air-conditioning to beat the summer heat. It started to taper in the second half of June after the monsoon set in.
Month-on-month sales fell 13.7%, when compared with 7.13 million tonne of diesel consumed in June.
Petrol sales however rose 3.8% to 2.76 million tonne in July when compared with the same period last year. Consumption had dropped 10.5% in the first fortnight of July but picked up in the latter half. Sales were down 4.6% month-on-month, the data showed.
Both the manufacturing and services sectors in India have been in expansion territory to support oil demand for over one year.
This led to petrol and diesel sales rising since the second half of March.
For the year, India's oil demand is forecast at 0.2 million barrels per day year-on-year, according to oil cartel OPEC's monthly oil bulletin.
Consumption of petrol during July was 16.6% more than in COVID-marred July 2021 and 20.8% more than in pre-pandemic July 2019.
Diesel consumption was up 12.8% over July 2021 but almost flat when compared with July 2019.
With the continuing rise in passenger traffic at airports, jet fuel (ATF) demand rose 10.3% to 603,500 tonne during July as compared to the same period last year.
It was more than double that of July 2021, but 2.9% lower than pre-COVID July 2019.
Month-on-month jet fuel sales was up 1.6% when compared with 594,100 tonne in June 2023.
The country's oil demand during the last few months was supported by strong industrial activity, industry officials said.
Cooking gas LPG sales were down 1.7% year-on-year to 2.46 million tonne in July. LPG consumption was 4% higher than in July 2021 and 11.7% more than pre-COVID July 2019.
Month-on-month, LPG demand was up 8% compared to 2.28 million tonne of LPG consumption during June, the data showed.

Data from Oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell has showed that India's fuel consumption has risen 5% year on year in March. This indicates the rise in demand for oil by India, which happens to be the world's third biggest oil consumer.
As per the data, consumption rose to 4.83 million barrels per day. This is the highest recorded in data going back to 1998. The sales of gasoline, or petrol, rose 6.8% to 3.1 million tonnes while cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), sales fell 2.7% year-on-year to 2.41 million tonnes. The report also mentioned that the sales of bitumen, used for making roads, jumped 16.5% month-on-month, and fuel oil use increased more than 2% in March, compared with February. Jet fuel sales rose more than 10.4% to 0.69 million tonnes and diesel sales were up 11.4% to 7.80 million tonnes.
As per Business Standard, the rise in consumption is driven by robust economic activities. India outlined plans in March to invest billions of dollars in airports, aircraft and recruitment as the world's fastest-growing economy seeks to meet booming air travel demand.

India&rsquo;s retail inflation rate rose to 6.52% in January from 5.72% in December, which is well above the upper end of RBI's comfort zone of 6%.&nbsp; &ldquo;Food inflation is likely to stay high, prices of milk, maize and soy oil are adding to inflation worries in the near term,&rdquo; a senior source familiar with the central bank&rsquo;s and government&rsquo;s thinking on the matter was also quoted by Reuters.&nbsp; India imports more than two-thirds of its oil requirements. A cut in taxes by the central government could push pump operators to pass on the benefits to retail consumers and help bring down inflation.

While jet fuel prices are revised on the 1st and 16th of every month, petrol and diesel rates are revised daily based on equivalent rates in the international market. The increase in ATF price comes on the back of the steepest ever hike of 18.3 per cent (Rs 17,135.63 per kl) effected on March 16 and a 2 per cent (Rs 2,258.54 per kl) increase on April 1. Prices were increased by a marginal 0.2 per cent on April 16.
ATF in Mumbai now costs Rs 1,15,617.24 per kl, while it is priced at Rs 1,21,430.48 in Kolkata and Rs 1,20,728.03 in Chennai.
Rates differ from State to State, depending on the incidence of local taxation.
Jet fuel, which makes up for almost 40 per cent of the running cost of an airline, has this year surged to new highs. ATF prices have increased every fortnight since the start of 2022. Dismissing Opposition criticism that the increase in petrol and diesel prices in the country was linked to the end of the election season, the govt has said that the international situation due to the war in Ukraine has led to the hike in fuel prices. 
Union Minister Piyush Goyal has said that prices of oil, food and other essential commodities have increased across the world because of the Russian offensive in Ukraine and inspite of that the govt has tried to keep inflation under control. 
He added that opposition parties were blaming the BJP govt for the hike in fuel prices because they were frustrated after their loss in the recently ended assembly elections.

Dismissing Opposition criticism that the increase in petrol and diesel prices in the country was linked to the end of the election season, the govt has said that the international situation due to the war in Ukraine has led to the hike in fuel prices.&nbsp;
Union Minister Piyush&nbsp;Goyal&nbsp;has said that prices of oil, food and other essential commodities have increased across the world because of the Russian offensive in Ukraine and inspite of that the govt has tried to keep inflation under control.&nbsp;
He added that opposition parties were blaming the BJP&nbsp;govt for the hike in fuel prices because they were&nbsp;frustrated after their loss in the recently ended assembly elections.&nbsp;

800 medicines to get costlier
Prices of nearly 800 scheduled medicines which are used to treat the majority of common ailments, will rise by 10.7% beginning April 1.&nbsp;Now the prices of medicines used to treat fever, infections, heart diseases, high blood pressure, skin diseases and anaemia will increase. This includes drugs like Paracetamol, Phenobarbitone, Phenytoin Sodium, Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride and Metronidazole.

All the four increases since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22, have been of 80 paise a litre. These  increases are the steepest single-day rise since the daily price revision was started in June 2017.
In four increases, petrol and diesel prices have gone up by Rs 3.20 a litre.
Prices had been on a freeze since November 4 ahead of the assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab -- a period during which the cost of raw material (crude oil) soared by about USD 30 per barrel.

Reliance is gearing up to come to the rescue of a fuel starved Europe as Mukesh Ambani's flagship refinery at Jamnagar gears to boost diesel supply to EU as per reports. Bloomberg reports Reliance Industries is deferring planned maintenance to ensure added supply is available as demand for diesel surges. Unnamed sources were quoted as saying the refinery that already supplies to Europe is gearing to ramp that up significantly. The Gujarat based refinery complex can process 1.36 million barrels of crude a day and is able to export most of the fuel.
