Industralisation and urbanisation have their boons and banes. While they have profited us in many ways, they also pose a significant threat to our health. One of the many things that are affected by pollution and environmental changes is fertility.
Environmental factors can play a role in influencing fertility in both men and women. These factors can have direct or indirect effects on reproductive health. It's important to note that individual responses to environmental factors may vary, and fertility is influenced by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.&nbsp;
We at Editorji, spoke to Dr Hima Deepti, senior fertility specialist from Hyderabad, who gave us insights into how the environmental changes are affecting fertility.
<h3>How does the environment affect fertility?</h3>
Talking about the environment affects fertility, the doctor said, "Environmental factors have a lot of chemicals in them, both natural and synthetic. Now these chemicals are called endocrine disruptors. Now what do these endocrine disruptors do? Basically, they mimic the natural hormones which are produced in the body and they alter the production of these hormones, their alter the production of these hormones, their transportation and their function. So these hormones which are very important to maintain the reproductive potential both in female and male. So they are getting altered."
The doctor explains that men lose their sperm count and motility, "Coming to a man, it leads to decrease in the sperm quality, the sperm counts, the sperm motility. In fact, some of the endocrine disruptors have been found to alter the DNA fragmentation of sperms. That means the genes in the sperms are getting altered."
<h3>How are we exposed to these endocrine disruptors?</h3>
The doctor further explained that we are getting these endocrine disruptors from mineral water bottles, food packagng and smoking. She said, "Our everyday exposure to mineral water bottles, the plastic mineral water bottles which we use, the food packaging that is done for packed foods and exposure to smoking, alcohol, other kinds of occupational hazards where you're exposed to a lot of smoke and pollution. Now all of this is responsible for our increased exposure to endocrine disruptors. And this exposure to the environment, pollution without our knowledge, is leading to a decline in the fertility."

New research shows women who have had a miscarriage or stillbirth, have an increased risk of stroke in later life.&nbsp;

Women with a history of miscarriage or stillbirth have a higher risk of stroke in later life, a Queensland-led study has found.&nbsp;
For the study, the team analysed data of 6,20,000 women aged between 32 and 73 for a period of 11 years. Researchers found that the risk increased with each miscarriage or stillbirth.
As per the findings, more than 13,000 participants experienced a stroke, including 4,000 who died, during the study. Women who had miscarried once had a 7 per cent higher risk of strokes compared to those who had never experienced a miscarriage in pregnancy.
The risk was 26 per cent higher for a deadly stroke after two miscarriages. And after three or more miscarriages, the risk spiked by 82 per cent for a deadly stroke.

Women who are obese and struggling to become pregnant are often advised to lose weight, but a new study finds no fertility benefits from weight loss.

According to a recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, weight loss does not improve fertility in women but confers other benefits such as metabolic health.

For the study, researchers examined 379 women with obesity and unexplained infertility for a period of three years. Participants were into two groups; the first group dieted intensely using meal replacements and increased physical activity. The other group simply increased their physical activity without trying to lose weight.
In total, 23 of the 188 women who completed the weight-loss program ended up giving birth and among the 191 who completed the exercise-only program, 29 gave birth. Based on their findings, researchers concluded that weight-loss programs did not increase fertility or enhance birth outcomes in women.

A recent study indicates that COVID-19 infection can reduce male fertility.&nbsp;

According to a study led by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, even a mild or moderate COVID-19 illness could change the level of proteins that are related to the male reproductive function which may impair fertility. The study was published in the &lsquo;ACS Omega&rsquo; journal.

For the study, researchers analysed semen samples of 10 healthy men and 17 men who had recently recovered from COVID-19. None of them, who ranged in age from 20 to 45, had a prior history of infertility.
The team found that the recovered men had significantly reduced sperm count and motility than those who were not affected by COVID-19. Although SARS-CoV-2 mainly affects the respiratory system, the virus also damages other tissues, the study authors concluded.
