National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday took his maiden ride in the recently inaugurated Vande Bharat train from Srinagar to Katra township and said he was overwhelmed to see Kashmir finally getting connected to the country's rail network.
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said he hopes the intended Amarnath pilgrims will use the train and come in large numbers to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine.
The annual yatra is scheduled to commence in the Kashmir Himalayas on July 3. On June 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat trains from Katra to Srinagar and Srinagar to Katra, marking the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.
Abdullah, wearing a round sun-visor hat, boarded the train at Nowgam Railway Station in Srinagar this morning and was received by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Jammu NC president, Rattan Lal Gupta, in Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.
"My heart is overwhelmed and my eyes filled with tears on seeing Kashmir finally getting connected with the country's rail network. I congratulate the engineers and the workers for making it happen," Abdullah told reporters after deboarding.
He called the train the biggest victory for the people as it will ease travel, boost trade and tourism, and also strengthen "love and friendship" between the two regions.
"We hope that the yatris from across the country will use the facility to turn up in large numbers for darshan at Amarnath cave shrine during the upcoming pilgrimage," Abdullah said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's sons, Zamir and Zahir, J-K minister Satish Sharma, chief minister's advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and National Conference chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq also accompanied Abdulah on his train ride.
"Took our first train ride from Srinagar to Katra truly impressed! The journey crosses the iconic Anji bridge and weaves through stunning tunnels. A remarkable experience," Sadiq wrote on X, also sharing some pictures of the trip.
Abdullah said the train will help transport horticulture produce from Kashmir to different markets in the country, including the far-off Kanyakumari, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bihar.
Earlier, in Srinagar, the NC chief said, "I am very happy that I am travelling by this train to Katra today. It has been the biggest benefit for us." He said the train would be a reliable transport link for the people of the valley.
"The road (between Srinagar and Jammu) gets closed sometimes and the airlines start fleecing the people by jacking up the prices. With this train, people will be saved from that," he said.
Abdullah said the railway link will also prove to be beneficial to the horticulture sector in Kashmir as the produce will reach the markets faster.
"It will also benefit tourists visiting Kashmir," he added.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday asserted that the atmosphere of fear in Kashmir has significantly reduced and urged the tourists to visit the valley again to enjoy its beauty.
The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir also urged the External Affairs Ministry to make efforts for getting revoked the negative travel advisories issued by some countries against visiting J-K.
Tourism in Kashmir has been hit after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that left 26 people dead.
"What happened here (Pahalgam attack) was very sad, it should not have happened. People were coming here happily. People were busy with their work, they were not asking for government jobs. The situation was such in Pahalgam that there were no rooms available here," Abdullah told PTI Videos here.
The NC chief visited the tourist resort and played golf at the Pahalgam Golf Course along with some friends.
He said while the attack created an atmosphere of fear, the government has taken some steps to improve the security situation in the valley.
"There was an atmosphere for fear, but I feel now the atmosphere of fear has reduced to a large extent. You can see how many people are coming to Pahlagam. I was in Gulmarg, there were 400-500 tourists," he observed.
"Thank God, the fear is now leaving. The government has also taken some steps to make the security system stronger. I think the people should come," he added.
The former Union minister appealed to the Centre to make efforts to withdraw travel advisories issued by several countries against visiting J-K.
"I also request the Central government, the Foreign Minister, that the time has come to remove the block placed by foreign countries on visiting India. Peace has come to both the countries and we are hopeful that peace will continue in the future as well. They should also be given permission to come here as they also want to see this place. Many of them are golfers and I hope they will come," he said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan.
Abdullah said many people play golf and the game has now got a place in Khelo India games as well.
"It is played in Olympics, Common Wealth games and Asian Games, so, now there is a need to have it everywhere. I think our people should come here in large numbers, play this sport so that India gets medals in these games," he said.
Praising Kashmir's natural beauty, he said, "Look at this weather and beauty, I have travelled to various places across the world, but I have not seen such beauty anywhere. I hope the people who watch your channel come here in large numbers, see this beauty and make the country stronger. We should not be afraid, if we are afraid, then we are dead".
On the annual Amarnath Yatra scheduled to begin on July 3, Abdullah said the pilgrimage is very important for us.
"It has been going on for many years. I hope more and pilgrims will come here to have a glimpse of Shankar Bhagvan, Bhole Nath comfortably, and then tell people back home how beautiful this place is," he said.
To a question about J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah holding a meeting of his council of ministers, as well as a meeting with tourism stakeholders at Pahalgam later in the day, the NC president said it is important and will send out a message that there is peace.
"One the people will get to know that the whole cabinet is here and there is peace. They will also meet the stakeholders. That will also have an impact because the people here, whether it is the ponywalla, palki wallah, hotelliers, taxiwallah, are bearing the most brunt "These people have taken loans, some have taken it for renovation of houses and hotels, cabs, for horses. I hope that more and more people from our country come here and we show them that we have exhibited hospitality in the past and we will do that in future as well," he said.
Asked about reports of differences in the party especially with its Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Abdullah said attempts were always made to break his party but the leadership was not worried.
"This is not something new for us. It has been happening. They will continue their attempts. They did it in my time, in my father's time. It is not new for us, we are not worried. Why should we be worried? "We are here to resolve the problems of the people and we will do that Insha Allah (God willing). You see how much change will come to this state in five years," he said.

National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah on Monday called for relocation and rehabilitation of the families affected by the flash floods triggered by heavy rain and cloudbursts that caused widespread devastation in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district.
Calling it a "national disaster", he urged the Centre to step in and provide immediate assistance to the affected people.
The landslide-hit Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for a second consecutive day, with a senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official saying the road clearance operation, underway at 20 locations, was likely to take about six days.
Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on the strategic 250-kilometre highway after Sunday's heavy rainfall and cloudbursts triggered flash floods, landslides and mudslides in the district.
Three persons, including two minor siblings, were killed and more than 100 people were rescued as the natural calamity caused massive damage to infrastructure, including roads and residential buildings. A number of vehicles were also buried under the debris.
"This is a very big disaster -- it is actually a national disaster. Entire villages have been affected. Three people have died and we are still uncertain about the full extent of the damage. I hope the government of India and the prime minister will provide maximum assistance and support to these people," Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of a function.
The former chief minister of the erstwhile state said another cloudburst had occurred at a separate location, claiming two more lives.
"These are major natural disasters. We need to act urgently and put measures in place to prevent their recurrence," he said.
Calling for better water management systems, Abdullah laid stress on the need for repairing 'nullahs (canals)' to ensure proper flow and reduce the risk of future disasters.
"We need to fix the canals so that their water flows directly and doesn't scatter. The entire mountain has collapsed. People can no longer live there, they must be relocated and resettled in safer areas," Abdullah said.
He also emphasised "everyone needs to step in -- whether it is the central or the state government" and added, "This is the time to act and save lives." Abdullah highlighted the fragile condition of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway -- the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.
"It has been badly affected. If the train had been operational, people could have used it and been safe. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad that even the prime minister could not come (for its inauguration)," he said.
Underscoring the urgent need for alternative connectivity, Abdullah said, "The burden on Mughal Road has increased and people are being stopped at Sundarbani (Rajouri) and released in phases. We have only one road -- it has become a path of destruction." The Mughal Road connects the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district.
Pitching for more tunnels to avoid disasters, he said a tunnel from Doda must be expedited.
"A tunnel on the Mughal Road is also essential. We need multiple alternative routes to connect the region," Abdullah said.

"If the defence minister is saying it, then go ahead. Who are we to stop? But remember, they (Pakistan) are also not wearing bangles. It has atom bombs, and unfortunately, that atom bomb will fall on us," he said.
Earlier in April, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that considering the development taking place in India, the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) will themselves demand to be with India.
"Don't worry. PoK was, is and will remain ours," Mr Singh said, addressing a rally at West Bengal's Darjeeling, where the BJP had nominated sitting MP Raju Bista.
"India's power is increasing. India's prestige is increasing around the world, and our economy is fast progressing. Now our brothers and sisters in PoK will themselves demand to come with India," Mr Singh further said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is part of India and added that there is a resolution of the Indian Parliament which states that PoK is part of the country.
He noted that people were made to forget about PoK, however, it is now back in the consciousness of the people of India.

Abdullah, a former chief minister, said the BJP government's claim that Article 370 was responsible for terrorism now stands exposed, reiterating his stand that only dialogue between India and Pakistan can end the threat in the region.
One IAF soldier died and four others were injured when terrorists attacked a security convoy in the Surankote area of Poonch district Saturday evening.
Talking to PTI videos in an exclusive interview here, the NC leader said terror attacks like the one on the IAF convoy have been afflicting the region for the past many months.
"That area has been disturbed for many months. Incidents have taken place in Rajouri, Surankote and other adjacent areas," he said and paid his tributes to the dead and prayed for early recovery of the injured.
As far as terrorism is concerned, he said, the BJP government will claim that Article 370 was responsible for it, but even after its abrogation on August 5, 2019, the terrorism is still there.
"I believe the Cold War between India and Pakistan is responsible for it. Till the two countries do not start a dialogue process and find a solution to this issue, it won't stop," Abdullah said.
He said both countries are nuclear nations and it will lead to destruction if there is no dialogue.
"It is very important to consider the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. But they kept playing with the emotions of our people," he said.
Expressing confidence in the India bloc that it will win all six Lok Sabha seats in J-K and Ladakh, he said, "If India alliance wins, we will not only initiate a dialogue process with our neighbour but will also try to save the Constitution of India, the Constitution that was framed by B R Ambedkar." "Many things will change. Our election commission will be independent once again. Our judiciary will be independent. They won't work as per the whims and fancies of BJP. Things will be done in the interest of people because they are the authority," he asserted.
Talking about his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2021 in New Delhi, Abdullah said he requested the PM to lessen the distance between 'Dilli ki doori aur dil ki doori' "but despite being assured about the release of those arrested on August 5, 2019, they are still behind the bars." "I had just recovered from COVID and I was weak but I still went to meet him. I said the people who were arrested after August 5 needed to be released. They said they would form a committee. Home Minister (Amit Shah) and Lt Governor (Manoj Sinha) were also present in that meeting.
"They said those who were not involved in any anti-national activity would be released but nothing happened. It has been more than four years now," he said. "This is not the way to build relationships." On Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's statement that India is the land of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, Abdullah said, "It not only alienates Muslims but also Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Zoroastrians, who belong to this nation." Abdullah said the BJP knows that it is on the verge of losing the election and that's why it is using religion to divide the people.
"You must have heard PM Modi's recent statements about 'mangalsutra'. Does he only represent Hindus of this country?" he asked.
"He (Modi) must talk about unity but the only thing he talks about is how to divide communities in the name of religion. It does not suit him at all," the Kashmiri leader added.&nbsp;

The 86-year-old politician is understood to have been called in connection with the federal agency's investigation into alleged irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).
The MP from Srinagar Lok Sabha seat was charge-sheeted by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the case in 2022.
The case relates to siphoning off the funds of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association by way of transfer to various personal bank accounts of unrelated parties, including those of JKCA office bearers, and by way of unexplained cash withdrawals from JKCA bank accounts, the ED had said.
The agency's case is based on a 2018 charge-sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against the same accused.
The summons have asked Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, to depose at the ED office in Srinagar.&nbsp;

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday visited a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on horseback.
The former chief minister's visit to the picturesque Warwan-Marwah, which usually remains cut off in the winter months owing to heavy snowfall, sent the villagers and especially the National Conference workers into celebration.
The 84-year-old, currently on a four-day tour of the Chenab valley region, was accompanied by party general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, MP (Anantnag) Hasnain Masoodi, senior leader Sajad Kitchloo and party chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq.
Villagers danced and raised slogans in support of Abdullah as he and his party colleagues arrived.
"After a long time, I got an opportunity to visit here. These five last villages (of Kishtwar) lack basic facilities like health, electricity and a round-the-year road connectivity," Abdullah said.
He said the biggest problem for the residents was non-availability of electricity. "We have provided them with a solar system long back but the population in these villages has increased and they are demanding additional solar lights." Abdullah, an MP from Srinagar, said since the winter in the area was very harsh, the villagers had a genuine demand for a helicopter service to evacuate patients for timely medical attention and for deployment of doctors on a rotational basis.
The NC leader said that he, along with his two MPs Masoodi and Mohd Akbar Lone, would take up the issue of construction of a road tunnel to connect the Warwan-Marwah belt with the Kashmir valley with Union minister Nitin Gadkari.

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the government should order an inquiry to ascertain how tents and community kitchens were set up in a highly-vulnerable area close to the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/at-least-13-people-dead-amarnath-yatra-suspended-after-cloudburst-1657333437064" target="_blank">Amarnath cave shrine </a>in the south Kashmir Himalayas, which was hit by flash floods on Friday.
"We are hopeful that the government will form an inquiry commission to know how it happened and why it happened," Abdullah told reporters after meeting Yashwant Sinha, the joint opposition candidate for the July 18 presidential polls, here.
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister questioned the decision to set up tents and "langar" (community kitchen) at such a vulnerable area.

"The location of the tents and langars is such that I do not think these things were done there earlier. Panjtarni is such a nice area for this. This needs to be investigated, may be it is a human error," Abdullah said.
He said the kin of the victims should be given compensation and steps should be taken to ensure that such incidents do not take place again.
The death toll in the flash floods triggered by heavy rain near the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/watch-cloudburst-near-amarnath-cave-rescue-operation-underway-1657288752571" target="_blank">Amarnath</a> cave shrine rose to 16 on Saturday as the search operations continued without a break amid fears that many are still trapped under the debris.

 National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah Saturday withdrew his name for consideration as the joint opposition candidate for the presidential polls, saying he would like to contribute in navigating of Jammu and Kashmir which is "passing through a critical juncture".
He, however, thanked the opposition leaders for proposing his name as their candidate for the polls next month.
In a statement released by his party, the Lok Sabha member said he was honoured that his name was proposed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a possible joint opposition candidate for the office of President of India.
"Subsequent to Mamata didi proposing my name, I have received a number of calls from opposition leaders offering their support for my candidature," Abdullah said in a statement.
He said he had discussions with senior colleagues of his party and family about this "unexpected" development.
"I am deeply touched by the support that I've received and honoured to have been considered for the highest office in the country. I believe that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through a critical juncture and my efforts are required to help navigate these uncertain times," he said.
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said he believed he has a "lot more active politics ahead of me and look forward to making a positive contribution in the service of JK and the country".
"Therefore, I would like to respectfully withdraw my name from consideration and I look forward to supporting the joint opposition consensus candidate," the NC statement said, conveying his gratitude to Banerjee and all the senior leaders who offered their support.

The Gupkar alliance of mainstream political parties in&nbsp;Jammu and Kashmir has accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation for an all-party meeting on June 24.&nbsp;
The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance chaired by&nbsp;Former chief minister Farooq Abdullah&nbsp;in Srinagar.&nbsp;The meeting was convened to formulate a strategy for PM Modi&rsquo;s all-party meeting on the erstwhile state.

The petition had demanded that Abdullah's membership of Parliament be declared null and void and sedition charges be slapped on him under Section 124-A of IPC. The court also directed the petitioners to deposit ₹50,000 for filing the petition.
