A remark which India's foreign minister S. Jaishankar made last year has now been quoted by Germany's Chancellor at the Munich Security Conference.
At the 17th GLOBSEC Forum in Bratislava, Slovakia in June 2022, Jaishankar had accused Europe of staying silent on many important issues. The Indian minister had said that Europe needs to "grow out of the mindset that Europe's problems are the world's problems, but the world's problems are not Europe's problems".
At the recently concluded Munich Security Conference, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Jaishankar's quote has been included in the 2023 report since "he has a point". Scholz said that it "wouldn't be Europe's problems alone if the law of the strong were to assert itself in international relations".

Heavily criticized European Super League back with 80-team competition

According to the organisers, they have consulted with nearly 50 European clubs since October last year and developed 10 principles that will help in creating the new league.

After receiving massive backlash from the football fraternity back in April 2021, the European Super League is back with another idea of an 80-team multi-divisional competition.
"The foundations of European football are in danger of collapsing," the League's Chief Executive Reichart told German newspaper Die Welt.
"It's time for a change. It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football.
"But when important decisions are at stake, they are too often forced to sit idly by on the sidelines as the sporting and financial foundations crumble around them." He further added.
According to the organisers, the ESL will be an open competition with up to 80 teams. Each team will play a minimum of 14 matches per season while they continue to play in their domestic competitions.
Big European clubs were previously the founding members, but Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham backed out following widespread condemnation. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, however, are still hoping for the ESL to become a reality.
Both FIFA and UEFA had stood up against the idea of the breakaway league and also warned the clubs with possible sanctions if they took part in it.

The aircraft and passengers were searched, and no bomb was found, authorities said. The Boeing 737-800 plane arrived in Athens at 5:40 pm after departing from Katowice around 2 hours late.
It was escorted through Greek airspace by two Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighters.
The flight was operated by Buzz airlines, a Polish subsidiary of low-cost carrier Ryanair.
The search for an explosive device, which lasted over an hour, turned up nothing. The airline has not made a statement and airport authorities did not respond to inquiries, according to news agency AP.

Around 1,000 km away from Ukraine, yet another historical territorial dispute is threatening to overwhelm Europe, and further shake the world - the Serbia-Kosovo conflict.

Weapons ready to attack at the border. Soldiers at highest combat alertness. Across the border, roads blocked with trucks and tractors by angry civilians. This are scenes in Europe, but not Ukraine.
Around 1,000 km away from Ukraine, yet another historical territorial dispute is threatening to overwhelm Europe, and further shake the world - the Serbia-Kosovo conflict.
To understand what's happening in Kosovo now, let's first take a look at the events of the past few decades.
 THE HISTORY
Kosovo, an Albanian-majority region, was a province of Serbia. Kosovo fought a guerrilla war against Serbian "repression". This led to a war in 1998-99 in which NATO intervened to protect ethnic Albanians. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Serbia doesn't recognise Kosovo as a separate nation.

Ethnic Serbs, which form 5% of the Kosovar population, reject Pristina's authority. They defy the Kosovo government by not paying power bills, and even fighting the police. The Serbs in Kosovo want an association of autonomous municipalities where the community is in majority. Serbia and Kosovo have agreed to negotiations sponsored by the European Union but there has been no headway.
Now, after days of rising tension, the situation in Kosovo and Serbia appears to be relaxing.
 THE CURRENT TENSION
One of the major sparks behind the recent flare-up was the arrest of a former policeman from the Serb community in Kosovo. He was held for allegedly assaulting police personnel. To resolve the tension, the ex-cop was released from jail on 29 December, and put under house arrest.
To protest the ex-cop's arrest, Serbs erected multiple roadblocks in north Kosovo, including on a key road from Serbia. On 28 December, the President of Serbia brokered the removal of the roadblocks.
Another point of dispute simmering recently was a two-month deadline for Serbs to switch to vehicle license plates issued by the Kosovar government. After a protest in which many Serb mayors, judges, and policemen quit, Pristina extended the deadline.
 WHY WORLD IS WARY
The reason why this tension is so alarming for the entire world is that NATO, the military alliance led by USA, and Russia have gotten involved in the conflict.
While NATO supports and recognises Kosovo's independence, Russia helps Serbia block Kosovo getting membership in the United Nations, and other international bodies. NATO has deployed around 3,700 troops in Kosovo as peace-keepers. Russia sees NATO action in the region as transgression in its backyard. Also, the European Union has placed 200 EULEX special police officers in Kosovo. Meanwhile, other adversaries of the US, like China, also support Serbia and call Kosovo an autonomous province under Belgrade.
The US and the European Union have appealed to Kosovo and Serbia to maintain peace. But what if the situation deteriorates? Europe is already reeling badly from the Russia-Ukraine war. Can it handle another active military conflict?
 CAN EUROPE HANDLE ANOTHER WAR?
One possibility is that if war breaks out, NATO may get involved like it did in 1998-99. Then, Serbia's ally Russia may jump in to counter NATO. This direct confrontation between superpowers has the potential to turn into a wider, possibly nuclear, war. On the economic front, a fresh Serbia-Kosovo war may drive up inflation, making food and energy costlier. It may also cause a major economic recession.
On 28 December, when Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that Serbs in Kosovo will remove roadblocks, he added that the "distrust" is yet to be removed. The statement encapsulated the fact that even decades later, the core issues which started the conflict have not been addressed. Without this resolution, peace in the region will continue to be fragile.

The incident on Sunday evening took place in Zubin Potok, a town where local ethnic Serbs have been manning road barricades for the past two weeks and where tensions have been running high.
The peacekeepers, known as KFOR, said the incident happened near one of their patrols, involving unknown people. A statement said no one was injured and &ldquo;we are working to establish all the facts.&rdquo;
Serbia's defence minister and the army's chief of staff travelled to the border with Kosovo, praising the combat readiness of Serbian troops and their firepower, including howitzers and other military hardware. Serbia, which has been armed through Russian donations and military purchases, has been sabre rattling and threatening force against its former province for a long time.
Kosovo remains a potential flashpoint in the Balkans years after the 1998-99 war that ended with NATO intervention. Serbia doesn't recognize the 2008 declaration of independence of its former province, while Western efforts to mediate a solution so far have failed.

As many as 49 people were arrested in raids. The super-cartel as per EU police agency Europol was operational in various countries including Dubai, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands.&nbsp; EU police agency said that over 30 tonnes of cocaine has been seized in the international drug operation.&nbsp;
The drugpins have been the probe agency's high value targets given their super cartel's control over one-third of Europe's cocaine's trade.
Among the arrested indiviudals, Europol said two suspects held from Dubai raids are linked to The Netherlands while two others are linked to Spain and France each.&nbsp;
Europol sources also told AFP that one of the Dutch suspects was "an extremely big fish". Even in the years 2020 and 2021, the man was held for allegedly importing thousands of kilos of cocaine into the Netherlands.
The Netherlands was the country where most of the arrests were made, with 14 suspects arrested in 2021. Europol said six &ldquo;high-value targets" were arrested in Dubai.
Record amounts of cocaine are being seized in Europe. Its availability on the continent has never been higher, with extremely high purity and low prices.
More than 214 tons of cocaine were seized in the region in 2020, a 6 per cent increase from the previous year, and experts from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction believe that amount could reach 300 tons in 2022.

As a result, Alpine glaciers lost 30 metres (just under 100 feet) in ice thickness between 1997 and 2021, while the Greenland ice sheet is swiftly melting and contributing to accelerating sea level rise.
Last year, Greenland experienced melting and the first-ever recorded rainfall at its highest point.
And the report cautioned that regardless of future levels of global warming, temperatures would likely continue to rise across Europe at a rate exceeding global mean temperature changes.
"Europe presents a live picture of a warming world and reminds us that even well-prepared societies are not safe from impacts of extreme weather events," WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement.
The new report, released ahead of the UN's 27th conference on climate set to open in Egypt on Sunday, examined the situation in Europe up to and including 2021.
It found that last year, high-impact weather and climate events -- mainly floods and storms -- led to hundreds of deaths, directly affected more than half a million people and caused economic damage across Europe exceeding $50 billion.

At the same time, the report highlighted some positives, including the success of many European countries in slashing greenhouse gas emissions.
Across the EU, such emissions decreased by nearly a third between 1990 and 2020, and the bloc has set a net 55-percent reduction target for 2030.
Europe is also one of the most advanced regions when it comes to cross-border cooperation towards climate change adaptation, the report said.
It also hailed Europe's world-leading deployment of early warning systems, providing protection for about 75 percent of the population, and said its heat-health action plans had saved many lives.

At least 16 European nations, including major powers like UK, Germany, and France, have become home to these Chinese police posts.

The aim of these stations is to help the Chinese diaspora present in other countries. Beijing says that these police outposts help Chinese nationals renew their identity papers like driving licences. They also help Chinese nationals procure employment documents by confirming that they do not face police cases. Another job is to help arrange health checks for Chinese nationals.
However, the real task of these police stations is very different, and much more sinister, according to activists.
These police outposts have been set up with the objective of tracking down Chinese persons wanted by authorities back home, including for political opposition to the Communist Party. These persons are then coerced into returning to China to face prosecution. This is done by the station staff forcing the person to speak to police in China. The police then threaten the targets with consequences like their children being denied schooling, and their relatives being made to face employment hurdles, and other problems.
Moreover, these overseas police stations may be involved in attempts to influence the elections in their host countries, according to a report in Investigative Journalism Reportika.
To make matters worse, these informal police stations might actually be illegal, according to Safeguard Defenders, an activist group which prepared a report on this Chinese project.
It said that these Chinese outposts are not properly registered in their host countries. Through this initiative, China is also not following proper extradition procedures for its wanted citizens. This is to prevent scrutiny of its human rights record, which is already poor. This project also eschews bilateral police and judicial cooperation, and possibly violates other countries' territorial integrity by creating a parallel police force with illegal methods.
These allegations seem all the more probable when looking at the addresses of these 'secret' police stations.
In London, England, one such station is reportedly present at the office of a real estate company. In Dublin, Ireland, the police outpost is located between two Asian restaurants on the famous Capel Street. In Glasgow, Scotland, the police station reportedly operates out of a Chinese restaurant. In Markham, Canada, one such outpost is set-up at a private home, while another is at a mall full of Chinese shops and restaurants. In Scarborough, Canada, the police station is present at a property belonging to the Canada Toronto FuQing Business Association.
China has admitted that it has been trying to "persuade" some people to return to the homeland. According to authorities, around 2.3 lakh people have returned to China since April 2021 through such initiatives. However, some incidents highlighted by activists point to the possibility of threats and coercion.
In 2018, in Serbia's Belgrade, a Chinese outpost tracked down a citizen accused of theft back in China. This person was brought to the station, and made to talk to police in China. Initially, the person did not want to go back, but agreed after a week.In 2020, a Chinese outpost in Madrid, Spain identified a man wanted in China for alleged environmental pollution. This person was made to talk to cops sitting next to his family in China, raising the possibility of his relatives being threatened.
Governments in other countries finally seem to be noticing the nefarious nature of these informal Chinese police stations.
Britain's Home Office has reportedly said that "illegal repatriation" efforts will not be tolerated, and extradition requests for suspected criminals must be made in accordance with UK and international law.
If the allegations are true, then China's attempt to undermine the governments of other countries, and set up its own police forces across the world poses a serious threat to the world order.

All this in the backdrop of the protracted Russia-Ukraine war, where Moscow's failure to win the conflict even after so many months is putting Vladimir Putin in a difficult position.
Are all these deaths a coincidence? Or are Russian businessmen, frustrated with Western sanctions, being scared into discipline by the Russian establishment?
Here's a look at the circumstances of the deaths, official stories, and conspiracy theories.
The first case was of Leonid Shulman, the head of transport at Gazprom Invest, which handles oil & gas major Gazprom's investment projects. Shulman was reportedly found dead in Leninsky village near Leningrad in Russia. His body was found in his cottage on 30 January 2022. Investigators said that a suicide note had also been discovered.

The second case was of another Gazprom top executive - Alexander Tyulakov. He was reportedly found dead in the same village as Shulman. Tyulakov's body was found in his garage on 25 February 2022. Russian reports called this death a suicide too.
The next death - that of Mikhail Watford - occurred outside Russia. Watford, a Ukraine-born Russian oil & gas billionaire, was found dead at his home in Surrey, England. His body was discovered on 28 February 2022. UK cops ruled out suspicious angles in the death.
The fourth case was of Vasily Melnikov, the owner of medical supplies firm MedStom. He was found dead along with his wife and children in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod. They reportedly died due to stab wounds on 23 March 2022. Investigators claimed there were no signs of 'unauthorised entry' into the house.
The next businessman to die was Vladislav Avayev, a former vice president of Gazprombank. He was found dead along with his wife and daughter. Their corpses were found at their Moscow house on 18 April 2022. Investigators reportedly called it a murder-suicide.
The sixth case was again outside Russia. Sergey Protosenya, a former executive at gas producer Novatek, and his family were found dead in Lloret de Mar, near Barcelona in Spain. His wife and daughter's bodies reportedly had injuries. The deaths were discovered on 19 April 2022. Catalan cops suspected yet another murder-suicide.
The next death was of Vladimir Lyakishev, former co-owner of the Bratya Karavayevi restaurant chain. He was found dead in Moscow on 4 May 2022 with a gunshot wound to the head. A gun registered in his name was reportedly found near the body. The corpse was discovered on the 16th floor balcony of the building where he lived.
Deceased number 8 was Alexander Subbotin, a senior executive at oil & gas giant Lukoil. He was found dead in Mytishchi on 8 May 2022. He reportedly died during a visit to a shaman in an intoxicated state. Subbotin was found in the basement, after having suffered an apparent heart attack. Authorities opened a criminal investigation in the case.
The next victim was Yury Voronov, founder-CEO of Astra Shipping, a Gazprom contractor. He was found dead in a Leningrad cottage on 4 July 2022. His body was in the swimming pool with a gunshot wound to the head. A pistol was found near the body. Investigators claimed no one was seen on CCTV cameras entering the house.
The most high-profile and mysterious death was of Ravil Maganov, the chairman of Lukoil. He died in Moscow on 1 September 2022 after falling from a hospital window. However, his company's statement cited a serious illness, and did not mention the fall.
While silence surrounds the deaths of most of these top businessmen, in some cases, voices of doubt have been raised, questioning the official stories.

The Russian energy giant announced Monday that it would slash flows on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that runs to Germany because of equipment repairs.&nbsp;
It's raised new fears that Russia could completely cut off gas that is used to power industry, generate electricity and heat homes to try to gain political leverage over Europe as it tries to bolster its storage levels for winter.&nbsp;
Data on the Nord Stream website and the head of Germany's network regulator, Klaus Mueller, confirmed the reduction.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Gas is now a part of Russian foreign policy and possibly Russian war strategy,&rdquo; Mueller said.&nbsp;
Natural gas prices have surged on Europe's TTF benchmark to levels not seen since early March and are nearly six times higher than they were a year ago.&nbsp;
Soaring energy prices are fuelling record inflation, squeezing people's spending power and heightening concerns that Europe could plunge into recession if it does not save enough gas to get through the cold months.&nbsp;

That fear led EU governments on Tuesday to agree to reduce natural gas use to protect against further Russian supply cuts.&nbsp;
The draft law aims to lower demand for gas by 15% from August through March with voluntary steps.&nbsp;
If there aren't enough savings, mandatory cuts would be triggered in the 27-nation bloc.&nbsp;
Russia, which has reduced or cut off natural gas to 12 EU countries since the war, insists that the new drop-off through Nord Stream 1 is because maintenance is needed on a turbine for a compressor station and another turbine sent for repairs in Canada has been delayed.&nbsp;
It has said the paperwork for the return of the second turbine has raised questions about Western sanctions.&nbsp;
European leaders and analysts say the reductions are a pretext to try to divide EU countries and elevate prices.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The developing situation seems to support our view that recent Russian cuts in flows are a purposeful deterioration in gas trade due to geopolitical escalations," James Huckstepp, manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa gas analytics at S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights, said in a research note Tuesday.&nbsp;
&ldquo;That being the case, it increases our scepticism around Russian imports in the months ahead," Huckstepp said.&nbsp;
Russia recently has accounted for about a third of Germany's gas supplies.&nbsp; The government said last week that the drop in gas flows confirmed that Germany can't rely on Russian deliveries, announcing that it would step up its gas storage requirements and take further measures to conserve supplies.&nbsp;

The World Health Organisation on Thursday reported a decline in monkey pox cases by 21% globally in the last week. The dropped percentage  suggests a reverse in month-long trend of rising infections. 
Signalling a possible decline of the outbreak in Europe, the UN health body  reported 5,907 new weekly cases and said two countries, Iran and Indonesia, reported their first cases. 
The health agency, however, warned against a "continuing steep rise" in Americas. It stated, "Cases in the Americas accounted for 60% of cases in the past month, while cases in Europe comprised about 38%."
British health authorities said last week  that there were “early signs” the country's monkeypox outbreak was slowing.
The UK's Health Security Agency downgraded the country's monkeypox outbreak last month, saying there was no evidence the once rare disease was spreading beyond men who were gay, bisexual or had sex with other men.
In early July, just weeks before the agency declared the international spread of the disease to be a global emergency, WHO's Europe director said countries in the region were responsible for 90% of all laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox.
To date, more than 45,000 cases have been reported in 98 countries since late April.
Since monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and North America were identified in May, WHO and other health agencies have noted that its spread was almost exclusively in men who have sex with men.
Monkeypox has been endemic in parts of Africa for decades and experts suspect the outbreaks in Europe and North America were triggered after the disease started spreading via sex at two raves in Spain and Belgium.
