Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday said that in the coming years, the medium of instruction in educational institutions will primarily be Indian and local languages.
The minister made the remarks while chairing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament on the theme of promotion of education in Indian languages, officials said.
"In the coming years, the medium of instruction will be primarily Indian and local languages. Higher education institutes such as IITs are introducing courses in local languages, including technical courses such as engineering. The priority remains to provide books in Indian languages," Pradhan said.
The minister also emphasised the use of technology in translating content and leveraging artificial intelligence for language translation.
"For students coming from rural areas or economically weaker sections, technology can help in understanding the content in their preferred language," he added.
Members of Parliament, who attended the meeting, appreciated the material prepared by the Ministry of Education on Bhasha Sangam, which will help students learn 100 sentences in 22 languages.
School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar informed the panel about the details of 1,369 mother tongues identified in the country, which were classified into 121 languages.
He also noted that these are spoken by more than 10,000 people in the country.
"Out of these 121 languages, 22 are written in the 8th edition of the Constitution, and 99 other languages are unidentified but spoken by more than 10,000 people," he said.

Chhattisgarh will absorb 2,621 BEd teachers into state school science lab roles after court invalidation.

More than 2,600 assistant teachers with BEd (Bachelor of Education) degrees, whose services were terminated by the Chhattisgarh government following a court order, will be absorbed in vacant posts in science laboratories of state-run schools, an official said on Wednesday.
A decision in this regard was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai here at Mantralaya (state secretariat), he said.
Sai, in a post on 'X', said, "Known for good governance, our government has done justice to 2,621 BEd-qualified assistant teachers whose services were terminated after appointment through Direct Recruitment 2023.
"We have decided to accommodate all these assistant teachers in the posts of Assistant Teacher Science (Laboratory). The School Education Department has been authorized for this (the absorption process)." The absorption will be done on non-advertised posts. Assistant teachers who have passed 12th from the arts/science faculty will be given three years to complete the prescribed qualification (12th maths/science). These candidates will be given two months of special training through the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) regarding laboratory work, the official informed.
Under the process, the vacant posts in scheduled area districts will be filled first followed by positions lying vacant in border districts. Other districts will be preferred later, he said.
The state government had terminated the services of these assistant teachers of primary schools in compliance with a Chhattisgarh High Court order dated April 2, 2024.
Notably, the issue of their termination stemmed from a notification of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) which was quashed by the Rajasthan High Court in 2021.
On June 28, 2018, the NCTE, a statutory body of the Centre, had issued a notification stating BEd degree holders were eligible for appointment to the post of primary school teachers (Classes I to V) earlier, for which only DEd (Diploma in Education) or D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) holders were considered qualified.
Based on this notification, the Chhattisgarh school education department had issued a notification including BEd as a qualification for appointment to the post of assistant teachers in the state.
While hearing a case pertaining to the appointment of primary teachers in Rajasthan, the Rajasthan High Court quashed the 2018 NCTE notification in 2021, holding BEd candidates to be unqualified for the posts of primary school teachers.
The matter later went to the Supreme Court, which on August 11, 2023, upheld the Rajasthan HC order quashing the 2018 NCTE notification. The apex court, however, noted BEd-qualified teachers appointed prior to this judgement will not be affected by its ruling.
Meanwhile, on May 4, 2023, the Chhattisgarh government published an advertisement for the vacant posts of primary school teachers in which both BEd and DEd holders were invited in the selection process.
On June 10, 2023, recruitment examinations were conducted, and results were declared in July the same year. The appointment process of the selected teachers started in September 2023. However, DEd-qualified candidates approached the Chhattisgarh HC, challenging the appointments of BEd holders as primary school teachers.
On April 2 last year, the Chhattisgarh HC held the notification of qualification of BEd as eligible for the post of assistant teacher (Classes I to V) as illegal and quashed their appointments.
On December 10 last year, the High Court, in a contempt case for not implementing its order dated April 2, 2024, granted the Chhattisgarh government "two weeks" for complying with its order.
Subsequently, the state government sacked the assistant teachers with BEd degrees, triggering state-wide protests by them.
However, on January 3, the government formed an inter-departmental committee headed by the chief secretary to look into the demands of the terminated teachers, which includes their absorption in vacant posts in the education department.

Ambedkar's vision and it is historic that for the first time, the Mann Government has included six ministers from Scheduled Castes in the Cabinet, implemented reservations in the Advocate General office and ensured smooth distribution of scholarships", said the Cabinet Minister, adding that to realize the great visionary leader's dreams, the Punjab Government is making substantial efforts to revitalize the state's health and education systems.
He said that sending children to government schools was once considered a necessity for common people, but now the education system is being reshaped, resulting in people willingly enrolling their children in government schools.
He said that Schools of Eminence have been established throughout the state to provide quality education to students and similarly, the government healthcare system is also being upgraded.

Delhi LG V K Saxena on Friday said the growing participation of women in higher education is a reflection of the changing educational and political landscape of the country as he cited the example of Delhi having women as both the chief minister and the leader of opposition (LoP).
Addressing the 17th convocation ceremony of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Saxena remarked, &ldquo;The time has passed when teachers used to give exams and teach you. Now, time itself will be your teacher. The larger share of women receiving degrees, particularly doctorate degrees, is a sheer indicator of the shifting educational landscape. It is special in the context of Delhi when we have a woman as the chief minister as well as the LoP.&rdquo; A total of 24,446 degrees were conferred at the ceremony, including 3,112 postgraduate, 21,222 undergraduate, 12 MPhil and over 100 PhD degrees.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta urged the students to think beyond personal goals and contribute to nation-building. &ldquo;The development of the country is not just the responsibility of governments but also of its citizens. Each of us should identify a role, big or small, that we can play in the service of the nation,&rdquo; she said.
Gupta also praised Saxena for his leadership during challenging times in the capital. &ldquo;He held Delhi when it was struggling and stood up for the rights of the city. He has worked not only for a good education system, but also for a clean and beautiful Delhi,&rdquo; she said.
Education Minister Ashish Sood emphasised the need for socially responsible youths. &ldquo;Whether you become a doctor, engineer or lawyer, your first duty is to be a responsible citizen. We need a generation that not only questions but also offers solutions,&rdquo; he said.
Vice-Chancellor Mahesh Verma noted the university&rsquo;s progress over the past 25 years. &ldquo;GGSIPU has become more than just an academic institution&mdash;it is now a movement of empowerment and inspiration,&rdquo; he said.
Also present at the ceremony were Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra, Higher Education Secretary Nandini Paliwal, and Indian National Science Academy President Ashutosh Sharma.

Harjot Singh Bains today inaugurated development projects worth Rs 4.25 crore in the border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran under the &ldquo;Sikhya Kranti&rdquo; initiative.
During his visit to border-area schools, S. Bains inaugurated works worth Rs 32.02 lakh, including seven renovated classrooms and a toilet block worth Rs 23.38 lakh at Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), Tapiala, and a new classroom and toilet block worth Rs 8.64 lakh at Government Primary School, Tapiala in the Rajasansi assembly constituency. Additionally, he dedicated three classrooms, constructed with the cost of Rs 48.7 lakh, at Government Senior Secondary School, Jheeta Kalan, and a boundary wall with a toilet block established with the cost of Rs 8.14 lakh at Government Elementary School, Jheeta Kalan under the Attari assembly constituency.&nbsp;
The Education Minister also announced grant of Rs 29.32 lakh for the construction of two classrooms, a basketball court, and a toilet block at Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), Mahan Singh Gate, in the Amritsar East assembly constituency.
Earlier, S. Bains visited schools near the international border in Khemkaran (Tarn Taran), inaugurating Rs 3.07 crore worth of infrastructure projects, including smart classrooms, science labs, and boundary walls. After inaugurating facilities in villages like Kals, Mastgarh, Mehndipur, Khemkaran, and Wantaara Singh&mdash;located just 20 meters from the border&mdash;he emphasised that the Punjab Government&rsquo;s ambitious &ldquo;Punjab Sikhya Kranti&rdquo; was launched from revolutionary land of Khatkar Kalan on April 7. He also announced a Rs 20 lakh grant for Government School Mehndipur.

Highlighting the government&rsquo;s commitment, S. Bains stated that over Rs 2,000 crore is being invested to transform the government schools, with 12 percent of &nbsp;the total expenditure in Punjab&rsquo;s 2025-26 budget allocated to education&mdash;the highest in history. He assured that all border-area schools would receive modern infrastructure and additional teachers, with over 300 new teachers have already been deployed in the last two years.
S. Harjot Singh Bains said that a war-level campaign is underway under the "War Against Drugs" campaign to curb the supply of drugs from across the border. He also highlighted that special attention is being given to the spread of education, emphasising its importance in drug prevention. &nbsp; Taking on political opponents who questioned the Sikhya Kranti, &nbsp;S. Harjot Bains stated, "When they had power, they did nothing for educational reform, but now they cannot see children from ordinary homes becoming doctors and engineers through good education." &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

He revealed that Rs 35 crore has been spent on infrastructure development in government schools in the Khemkaran assembly constituency alone. &nbsp; Meanwhile, Khemkaran MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun thanked the Education minister for his fourth visit to border schools, noting that improved facilities will uplift students&rsquo; futures.

Under the transformative initiative &lsquo;Punjab Sikhya Kranti&rsquo; spearheaded by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab government, Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday inaugurated significant development works in government schools across Dirba constituency.
The inauguration took place in the high school of Kamalpur village, the Government Senior Secondary Smart School of Mauran village, and the Comrade Bhim Singh School of Eminence in Dirba. These development projects represent a combined investment of Rs 108.61 lakh, with Rs 41.19 lakh allocated to Kamalpur, Rs 13.65 lakh to Mauran, and Rs 53.77 lakh to Dirba.
During the event, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema highlighted the Mann Government&rsquo;s commitment to revolutionizing the education sector. He said that the &lsquo;Punjab Sikhya Kranti&rsquo; aims to transform all 20,000 government schools in the state, with approximately 12,000 schools already undergoing significant improvements.
He said that previous governments had neglected the education sector, but the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government has increased the education budget by 57 percent in its very first year.
Finance Minister Cheema also underscored the Government&rsquo;s efforts to enhance school infrastructure and teacher training. He said that for the first time in Punjab&rsquo;s history, teachers were being sent abroad for advanced training.
&ldquo;Additionally, the government has also recruited around 20,000 teachers, providing employment opportunities to individuals from ordinary households&rdquo;, he added.
&ldquo;These initiatives have yielded remarkable results, with approximately 200 government school students successfully passing the JEE test. To further nurture academic excellence, the Punjab Government has established Schools of Eminence equipped with subject-specific labs, educational parks, separate toilets for boys and girls, transportation facilities, and essential staff such as security guards and sanitation workers&rdquo;, said Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
In addition to educational reforms, the Cabinet Minister, who is also Chairman of Yodh Nashian Virudh Cabinet Sub-Committee, highlighted the state&rsquo;s efforts to combat drug abuse under the &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo; campaign.
He said that the Government is taking strict action against drug traffickers while ensuring proper treatment and rehabilitation of drug victims. &ldquo;Measures such as anti-drone systems and new recruitment in the Punjab Home Guard are being implemented to curb drug trafficking along the Pakistan border&rdquo;, said Cabinet Minister Cheema while adding that these efforts aim to restore Punjab&rsquo;s vibrant spirit and make it &lsquo;Rangla Punjab&rsquo; once again.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Monday announced that Punjab is undergoing a significant and historic transformation in education as he inaugurated infrastructure development projects worth ₹79.85 lakhs in six government schools in Khanna.
Sond emphasized that education is the foundation of society and highlighted that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has allocated ₹17,975 crores to the education sector in the 2025-26 budget.
This funding will be used to ensure modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure in government schools.
The Cabinet Minister detailed that the Government Middle School in Rahon village, a boundary wall was constructed at a cost of ₹19 lakhs, and an additional ₹1 lakh was spent on completing bathrooms and repair work.
At the Government Senior Secondary School in Lalheri, two large classrooms and two modern labs were built, each costing ₹15.02 lakhs. New girls' bathrooms were also added at a cost of ₹1.5 lakhs. &nbsp;The Government Primary School in Malkpur village received ₹1.66 lakhs for bathroom construction. &nbsp;
At the Government Middle School in Ratanheri, three large classrooms were built for ₹18.50 lakhs.
The Government Middle School in Goh village had a new boundary wall constructed for ₹4.75 lakhs and bathrooms built at a cost of ₹1.40 lakhs. The Government Primary School in Goh village also received a boundary wall at a cost of ₹2 lakhs.
Sond noted that government schools are now outperforming private convent schools and have become the preferred choice for parents.
He also spoke that the government has regularized 12,500 temporary teachers and initiated the recruitment of 20,000 new teachers. Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's leadership, the Punjab Government has given 56,000 jobs for the youth, averaging 18,000 jobs per year.
The Cabinet Minister highlighted that the needs of these schools are being prioritized. Students are excelling not only in academics but also in sports and cultural competitions.
He mentioned that by establishing Schools of Eminence, the Punjab Government is taking significant steps to support the student community, providing relief to both students and their parents.
Sond also emphasized that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, a new phase of development has begun with a series of inaugurations across Punjab, which will continue in the coming days.

In a landmark move to revolutionize the state&rsquo;s education system, the Punjab Government is all set to launch 'Sikhya Kranti'&mdash; a 54-day education festival beginning April 7, to inaugurate newly developed infrastructure projects worth ₹2,000 crore in 12,000 government schools across the state.
Punjab School Education Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains announced the initiative during a press conference at Punjab Bhawan on Sunday, emphasizing the government&rsquo;s commitment to creating an equitable and modern learning environment that empowers students to thrive in the modern times.
The massive infrastructure development program includes the construction and renovation of schools, the introduction of modern learning facilities, he added.
"This initiative is a testament to the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government's commitment to providing quality education for all children," the Education Minister said, while adding that the government schools have been provided with all the required basic amenities, including clean drinking water, high-speed WiFi connections, separate toilets for girl and boy students, desks and chairs, and boundary walls, as mandated by the CM Mann.
He said that Punjab is the first state to appoint campus managers and security guards in schools, in addition to starting bus services for students.
Over 10,000 students are currently availing this facility. The Education Minister also highlighted that over Rs 200 crore is spent annually on the upkeep of government schools.
On the first day of the education festival &ldquo;Sikhya Kranti&rdquo;, S. Bains said, various infrastructure development projects would be inaugurated in over 350 government schools by the Cabinet Ministers and other dignitaries.

Inviting the people of Punjab to witness the &ldquo;Sikhya Kranti&rdquo;, S. Bains said that all people should visit their nearby schools to be a part of this festival of education.
Highlighting the ambitious program, S. Harjot Singh Bains said that 6,812 schools now have new or repaired boundary walls, covering nearly 1,000 kilometres, ensuring a safer learning environment. 5,399 new classrooms have been constructed to augment classroom facilities.
Additionally, 2,976 toilets have been built in 2,934 schools, while 7,166 toilets have been repaired across 4,889 schools. To support students' learning needs, 1,16,901 dual desks, tables, and chairs have been provided, ensuring that every student has a designated place to study.
Furthermore, 359 school playgrounds have been developed to promote physical activity. As many as 2,261 smart classrooms have been equipped with Smart Interactive Panels in 1,886 schools, integrating technology into education for a more engaging learning experience.
The Education Minister said that 118 existing Government Senior Secondary Schools are being converted into Schools of Eminence in the first phase, while, 14 SoE schools have already been dedicated to the public.
These schools will be the centers of excellence, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to enable peer learning across institutions, and enhance the learning experiences of our children through contemporary schooling practices in the world of school education. Schools of Eminence will cater to students of classes 9th to 12th.
All educational streams have been introduced in these schools. Free uniforms are being provided to students. Apart from this, Online/offline coaching for different competitive exams like Armed preparatory forces, NEET, JEE, CLAT, NIFT etc are also being provided to students, he added.

The recent video of Ananya fleeing with her books as authorities razed structures in her area has sparked outrage, with many questioning the human cost of such demolition drives.
In March, the girl had to leave her shanty during the demolition drive, as it was allegedly on encroached land.
The Ambedkar Nagar Police defended the demolition.
&ldquo;This action was taken to remove encroachment from the village land, following an ejection order passed by the Jalalpur tehsildar&rsquo;s court&hellip;The demolition was carried out in full compliance with the revenue court&rsquo;s order to reclaim government land,&rdquo; they said.
The SC, which recently took cognisance of the issue, has sought a response from authorities regarding the circumstances of such demolitions in nearby areas. &nbsp;After the video from the demolition drive went viral, she shared with reporters that she wants to be an IAS officer one day.&nbsp;

Revealing the information about the ambitious program, Punjab School Education Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains said that the government schools have been equipped with all the essential amenities including Wi-Fi Internet connections, furniture, clean drinking water, separate toilets for girls and boys.
He also highlighted that under this program, 6,812 schools now have new or repaired boundary walls, covering nearly 1,000 kilometres for enhanced safety for students. Additionally, 5,399 new classrooms have been built to accommodate students better, while sanitation facilities have seen a major upgrade with 2,976 new toilets in as many as 2,934 schools and repaired 7,166 toilets across 4,889 schools.
The program has also focused on student&rsquo;s comfort and well-being, 1,16,901 dual desks, tables, and chairs have been provided to schools ensuring a dedicated learning space for each student, he said, while adding that 359 school playgrounds have been developed to promote sports and physical activity among students. Furthermore, to modernise education, 2,261 smart classrooms with interactive panels have been installed in 1,886 schools, incorporating technology into education for a more engaging learning experience.
To mark the completion of these improvements, the Education Minister said that the Punjab School Education Department will hold inauguration ceremonies to be commenced from April 7 onwards, and continue until May 31st across all schools to showcase infrastructure development works, including additional classrooms, boundary walls, toilet blocks, drinking water facilities, libraries, playgrounds, smart classrooms, and other critical improvements, have been completed.
Meanwhile, this initiative underscores the state government's commitment to providing quality education for all children. The improved learning environment will empower students to excel academically, and this investment in education is expected to have a lasting impact on the future of Punjab.

In a poignant clip released by News18, Kumari shared her frustration over being unable to pursue science due to a challenge set by her parents. "There's a significant disparity between my brother and me at home," she lamented. "Brothers enjoy complete freedom to study, while sisters do not. We're not even provided a phone for studying. My mother declared that I could only take science if I scored over 400 marks. I scored 399," she recounted, breaking down in tears.
Faced with financial difficulties, her parents, including her father Upendra Rai, had opted for an arts education for Kumari. "We enrolled her in the arts stream due to financial constraints. The science stream would have required more money," Rai explained to the IANS news agency.
The video, however, mobilized support from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who promised Kumari assistance for her enrollment in a reputable science college. Through a video call organized by the Patna District Magistrate, Pradhan assured Kumari, "Do not worry, my child. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will ensure your education. Study diligently, and harbor no resentment towards your parents as they did their best given their circumstances."
Kumari, hopeful once more, expressed her desire to gain quality education in a science discipline.
According to Chandrashekhar Singh, the Patna District Magistrate, steps are being taken to ensure Kumari's admission to a Class 11 science program specializing in biology for the 2025-27 academic session.
"Officials are dedicated to facilitating this process," Singh confirmed.

The Pearson Global English Proficiency Report 2024 aggregated and analysed data from approximately 750,000 Versant tests conducted worldwide, offering a detailed snapshot of current skill levels and emerging trends. Versant by Pearson is an English Language assessment tool that accurately and efficiently evaluates candidates' English language proficiency, assisting businesses in hiring the best talent suited for their needs.
The report cited that while India's average English skills score (52) is lower than the global average English skills score (57), the country's average English speaking score (57) is higher (54).
The report also said India's average English writing score (61) is equivalent to the global average writing score (61).
Delhi led with the highest English speaking score (63) followed by Rajasthan (60) and Punjab (58).
"In today's global economy, English proficiency is not just a skill but a strategic asset. The Pearson Global English Proficiency Report 2024 provides business leaders with the data-driven insights they need to make informed decisions about hiring and developing their workforce. By integrating these insights into their talent strategies, organizations can enhance their competitive edge and drive growth," said Giovanni Giovannelli, president of Pearson's English Language Learning division.
According to the report, the Indian market has experienced significant growth in English skills in recent years, which is predicted to continue, with an emphasis on voice-based testing.
"Indian Business leaders know that accurately testing English skills reduces the cost of mis-hires and protects credibility, particularly when hiring at scale. India's average writing score is 61, matching the global average, reflecting steady improvements driven by increased digital communication and the necessity for written English in global business contexts," it said.
In India, the finance and banking sector leads with the highest speaking score of 63, surpassing the global average of 56, it said.
"Conversely, Healthcare has the lowest score (45), influenced by its rapid expansion and the focus on increasing access to jobs... Other sectors like Tech, Consulting and BPO show strong performance, consistently aligning with or exceeding global benchmarks," the report said.

Issac said the name &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; has been mentioned in ancient Hindu texts and scriptures like Vishnu Purana, which is believed to be 7,000 years old.
&ldquo;The term India started being used commonly only after the establishment of the East India Company and the battle of Plassey in 1757,&rdquo; he said, as per Hindustan Times.
Other changes suggested by the NCERT committee included the introduction of &lsquo;classical history&rsquo; and replacing it with &lsquo;ancient history&rsquo; in the textbook. Students will also be taught about &lsquo;Hindu victories.&rsquo;
&ldquo;Our failures are presently mentioned in the textbooks. But our victories over the Mughals and Sultans are not,&rdquo; Issac said, as per Hindustan Times.

Delhi Budget: AAP govt allocates Rs 16,575 crore for education

Providing 20 new computers to each of the 350 schools under the Delhi Government and teaching of French, German, Japanese and Spanish in Schools of Specialised Excellence are the highlights of the Delhi's budget for education sector.
The minister said more branches of the Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Education will come up in 2023. In 2021, there were 20 schools of specialised education, which will be increased to 37 in 2023.

The Gujarat Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill which makes teaching the Gujarati language compulsory in all primary schools in the state, including those affiliated with CBSE, ICSE and IB boards.
If a school is found violating the provisions of the "Gujarat Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Gujarati Language Bill, 2023" for more than a year, the government would "direct the Board or institution" to disaffiliate the school.
The bill, tabled by state Education Minister Kuberbhai Dindor, was passed unanimously by the 182-member House as both the opposition parties - the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party - supported its provisions.
As per the bill document, the schools which are currently not teaching Gujarati will have to introduce Gujarati as an additional language for classes 1 to 8 in phases from the upcoming academic year 2023-24.
"Every school shall follow textbooks prescribed by the Gujarat government for teaching Gujarati as an additional language. The state government will appoint a deputy director-level officer of the Education Department as the competent authority to implement the provisions of this bill," said Dindor.
If a school is found violating the provisions for the first time, it will be liable to pay a penalty of Rs 50,000, as per the bill document. The penalty will be Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh for subsequent violations.
"If a school continues to make contraventions to this act for over one year, the state government may direct the Board or institution to disaffiliate the school, to which such a school is affiliated," as per the provisions in the bill. The penalty will not be imposed without allowing the school concerned to put forward its explanation.

A special life-size hologram of Gandhi was projected during a panel discussion organised on Friday by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN and UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) at the UN headquarters here to commemorate the International Day of Non-Violence.
The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on October 2, the birthday of Gandhi. According to the General Assembly resolution of June 2007, which established the commemoration, the day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness".
The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".
The panel discussion featured India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj; CEO of The King Centre, Atlanta Bernice King; and youth representative and digital education transformation champion Princess Hayu of Indonesia.
The discussion, moderated by UNESCO MGIEP Director Anantha Duraiappah, was focussed on ‘Education for Human Flourishing’.
It was part of the Ahinsa Lecture Series and kickstarted the 10-year celebration of UNESCO MGIEP. It was for the first time at the UN that a life-size hologram of Mahatma Gandhi led the panel discussion, a statement said.
A voice-over accompanying the Gandhi hologram shared the iconic leader’s thoughts on education.
“Literacy is not the end of education or even the beginning. By education, I mean an all-around drawing out of the best in the child and the man, body, mind and spirit. By spiritual training, I mean education of the heart,” Gandhi said.
Ahead of the panel discussion, a message by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was read out.
In his message, Guterres said Gandhi’s life and example reveal a timeless pathway to a more peaceful and tolerant world, as the UN chief called on the international community to walk this path together, in solidarity, as one human family.
Director of the Mahatma Gandhi Digital Museum in Hyderabad Birad Yajnik told the event’s audience that the hologram was the second edition of the Gandhi hologram in 4k.
He recalled that the making of the hologram was a process that started in 2018 when Ambassador Kamboj was in South Africa.
In 2019, in association with the MGIEP, a dialogue with a hologram of Gandhi was envisioned. Ananda and his team researched the collected works of Gandhi and his thoughts on education.
“At our end, digitally graphic files were further sculpted, merged with motion graphics to produce a high-definition hologram that narrated the script,” Yajnik said, adding that this version led the panel discussion at UNESCO in Paris and later in New Delhi.
“The future of this hologram is to enable it with AI (Artificial Intelligence) voice engine that can engage the people of the world. The message of Mahatma Gandhi is a message of peace and love, a message that the world desperately needs today. And this would be our small effort to bring it to the youth of the world through the language of technology,” Yajnik said.
Guterres said in his message that the International Day of Non-Violence celebrates not only Gandhi’s birthday, but the values he embodied that echo across the decades: peace, mutual respect and the essential dignity shared by every person.
“Sadly, our world is not living up to those values. We see this through growing conflicts and climate chaos. Poverty, hunger and deepening inequalities. Prejudice, racism and rising hate speech. And a morally bankrupt global financial system that entrenches poverty and stymies recovery for developing countries,” he said.
The UN chief emphasised that the world can defeat these challenges by embracing Gandhi’s values and working across cultures and borders to build a better, more peaceful future for all.
“By investing in people’s health, education, decent jobs and social protection to prevent people from falling and catch them when they do. By ensuring access to financing and debt relief for all countries. By supporting developing countries as they build resilient infrastructure and protect populations from the impacts of climate change, while also accelerating the transition from planet-killing fossil fuels to renewable energy.
“By securing and upholding the rights and dignity of all people - especially the most vulnerable, and girls and women who are too often denied their basic rights. By taking concrete action for inclusion, recognising multicultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic societies as a richness, not a threat,” he said.
The Gandhi hologram made three appearances during the panel discussion, showing him both sitting and standing as he spoke about the values of education.
“We assess the value of education in the same manner as we assess the value of land or shares in the stock market. We want to provide only such education as would enable the student to earn more.
"We hardly give any thought to the improvement of the character of the educated. The schools and colleges are really a factory of turning out clerks for the government. On the contrary, real education consists in drawing the best out of yourself. What better book can there be than the book of humanity,” the Gandhi hologram said.
Education should provide access, equity, quality and affordability, Kamboj said, adding that it is very critical to provide holistic development as well as upliftment and dignity for every individual.
Stressing the importance of resilience, Kamboj said while education is imparted in schools and colleges, “I wonder how much we teach our children how to deal with the ups and downs.” “That is also very critical...life doesn't always dish out the best moments, you have to learn to deal with the ups and downs and, therefore, I think education should also be transformative in the sense that you teach youngsters to be able to take setbacks as you also take your successes,” she said.

In 2019, in association with the MGIEP, a dialogue with a hologram of Gandhi was envisioned. Ananda and his team researched the collected works of Gandhi and his thoughts on education.
&ldquo;At our end, digitally graphic files were further sculpted, merged with motion graphics to produce a high-definition hologram that narrated the script,&rdquo; Yajnik said, adding that this version led the panel discussion at UNESCO in Paris and later in New Delhi.
&ldquo;The future of this hologram is to enable it with AI (Artificial Intelligence) voice engine that can engage the people of the world. The message of Mahatma Gandhi is a message of peace and love, a message that the world desperately needs today. And this would be our small effort to bring it to the youth of the world through the language of technology,&rdquo; Yajnik said.
Guterres said in his message that the International Day of Non-Violence celebrates not only Gandhi&rsquo;s birthday, but the values he embodied that echo across the decades: peace, mutual respect and the essential dignity shared by every person.
&ldquo;Sadly, our world is not living up to those values. We see this through growing conflicts and climate chaos. Poverty, hunger and deepening inequalities. Prejudice, racism and rising hate speech. And a morally bankrupt global financial system that entrenches poverty and stymies recovery for developing countries,&rdquo; he said.
The UN chief emphasised that the world can defeat these challenges by embracing Gandhi&rsquo;s values and working across cultures and borders to build a better, more peaceful future for all.
&ldquo;By investing in people&rsquo;s health, education, decent jobs and social protection to prevent people from falling and catch them when they do. By ensuring access to financing and debt relief for all countries. By supporting developing countries as they build resilient infrastructure and protect populations from the impacts of climate change, while also accelerating the transition from planet-killing fossil fuels to renewable energy.
&ldquo;By securing and upholding the rights and dignity of all people - especially the most vulnerable, and girls and women who are too often denied their basic rights. By taking concrete action for inclusion, recognising multicultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic societies as a richness, not a threat,&rdquo; he said.
The Gandhi hologram made three appearances during the panel discussion, showing him both sitting and standing as he spoke about the values of education.
&ldquo;We assess the value of education in the same manner as we assess the value of land or shares in the stock market. We want to provide only such education as would enable the student to earn more.
"We hardly give any thought to the improvement of the character of the educated. The schools and colleges are really a factory of turning out clerks for the government. On the contrary, real education consists in drawing the best out of yourself. What better book can there be than the book of humanity,&rdquo; the Gandhi hologram said.
Education should provide access, equity, quality and affordability, Kamboj said, adding that it is very critical to provide holistic development as well as upliftment and dignity for every individual.
Stressing the importance of resilience, Kamboj said while education is imparted in schools and colleges, &ldquo;I wonder how much we teach our children how to deal with the ups and downs.&rdquo; &ldquo;That is also very critical...life doesn't always dish out the best moments, you have to learn to deal with the ups and downs and, therefore, I think education should also be transformative in the sense that you teach youngsters to be able to take setbacks as you also take your successes,&rdquo; she said.

Tamil Nadu rolls out Delhi model school plan, Kejriwal launches scheme

As many as 26 Schools of Excellence and 15 Model Schools are covered under the scheme, apparently in the initial phase.

The Tamil Nadu government inaugurated on Monday the Schools of Excellence and Model Schools Scheme, which is broadly based on schools in Delhi with upgraded infrastructure.
In an event held at the state-run Bharathi Women's College, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched the scheme in Chennai in the presence of his Tamil Nadu counterpart M K Stalin.
As many as 26 Schools of Excellence and 15 Model Schools are covered under the scheme, apparently in the initial phase.
'Thagaisal Palligal' and 'Mathiri Palligal' are the official Tamil names for the SoE and Model Schools.
Stalin also launched the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammayar memorial 'Puthumai Penn' (Modern Woman) Scheme, under which a monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 would be provided to girl students, who studied in government schools from classes 6-12, pursuing higher education.
As regards Kejriwal and the AAP, TN's plan provides one more opportunity to project his and his party-led government's 'successful' education/economic model being emulated elsewhere in the country. It would help the AAP to strengthen its narrative that it is no more a 'regional' party.
The upgraded infrastructure in state-run schools plan perfectly suits the DMK regime's "Dravidian model," which encompasses women empowerment and social justice.
The event may help AAP to score brownie points in future when it decides to seriously try its hand at electoral politics in Tamil Nadu. The AAP does not have a presence now in the state.
In April, along with Kejriwal, Stalin had visited government schools in Delhi and had praised the infrastructure in such institutions. He had then said his government would set up similar educational facilities in Tamil Nadu and invited Kejriwal for inauguration following completion of work.
In the Budget 2022-23, the state government had said the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme is being transformed as the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme.
The enrollment ratio of girl students from government schools in higher education is very low and the scheme's revamp was in recognition of that aspect.
Under the scheme, all girl students who studied from classes 6 to 12 in government schools would be paid Rs 1,000 per month directly into their bank account till the uninterrupted completion of their undergraduate degree, diploma and ITI courses.
The students would be eligible for this assistance in addition to other scholarships. Through this programme, approximately 6,00,000 girl students could potentially benefit each year. For this new scheme, an amount of Rs 698 crore was allotted in the budget.&nbsp;
