India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up about his struggles with mental health issues following his divorce from Dhanashree Verma, revealing that he was wrongly labelled as a "cheater" and battled suicidal thoughts during the tumultuous period.
Speaking on the Raj Shamani Podcast, Chahal addressed the public scrutiny surrounding his personal life and emphasised that the decision to separate was not sudden but had been under consideration for some time.
"After my divorce, I was called a cheater. But I have never cheated in my life. I'm extremely loyal - probably more than most. For my loved ones, I've always thought from the heart," he said.
The 34-year-old cricketer said he was emotionally distressed following the separation.
"I had suicidal thoughts. I was tired of my life. I would cry for two hours a day, sleep just two hours. This went on for over 40 days. I had anxiety attacks, depression. Only those close to me knew what I was going through," Chahal said.
Chahal also shared that he considered taking a break from cricket, as he found it difficult to focus amid the mental strain.
Reflecting on his marriage, Chahal said the growing professional commitments on both sides played a role in the eventual separation.
"It was going on for a while. We decided we wouldn't go public until we were sure. On social media, we looked like a normal couple, but the issues had started to build up. A relationship requires compromise - if both people are always busy, there's bound to be distance," he added.
Chahal denied rumors that emerged during that period and said the negativity affected him deeply.
"Just because you are seen with someone, people link you up. I have two sisters. I know how to respect women," he said.
The leg-spinner also addressed the viral moment when he wore a T-shirt that read "Be your own sugar daddy" during a court appearance, suggesting it was a symbolic response to events on the other side.
"I didn't want drama, but something happened from the other side. So, I gave my message through the T-shirt. I didn't abuse anyone," he clarified.
Despite the challenges, Chahal said the separation was handled maturely and mutually.
"If things happen between two people, they can still happen peacefully," he said.
Chahal is currently playing county cricket for Northamptonshire. He has taken a six-wicket haul (6/118 in 33.2 overs) in the first innings against Derbyshire in the ongoing County Championship Division Two.

A division bench of Calcutta High Court came down heavily on a trial court judge for ex parte dismissal of a suit for divorce on the grounds of cruelty and desertion sought by the appellant-husband.
The bench comprising Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya and Justice Uday Kumar, in an order passed on May 22, observed that the trial court judge, by the impugned judgment, overlooked the fact that the wife (respondent) did not adduce any evidence of her own despite having filed a written statement and also did not cross-examine the husband.
That apart, it transpires even on a cursory perusal of the impugned judgment that the learned judge proceeded entirely on a tangential perception of his own, without adverting at all to the materials on record.
The trial court passed an ex parte decree in February 2018 against a matrimonial suit filed in 2015.
The Calcutta High Court bench said that a decree of divorce on the grounds of cruelty is hereby granted to the husband against the wife.
The bench said it is just stopping short of making any serious adverse comment against the learned trial court judge, merely because such a comment could have an adverse effect on the judge's service career.
However, the division bench expects that the learned trial judge concerned shall, in future, be aware of copy-pasting his previous judgments and going on his tangential curve of wishful imagination instead of adverting to the facts and materials on record in the particular case before him.
If any future instance of such an act on the part of the learned trial judge is noticed, the same may be directed to enter into his service book, the bench warned.

In a significant development in the divorce proceedings between Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife Dhanashree Verma, the Bombay High Court has granted the couple's request to waive the mandatory six-month cooling-off period typically required after filing for divorce.
This decision allows the family court to fast-track the divorce proceedings, ensuring a resolution by March 20, ahead of Chahal&rsquo;s commitments with the Punjab Kings in the upcoming IPL 2025 season, which kicks off on March 22.
The legal update emerged from a ruling by a bench led by Justice Madhav Jamdar, who overturned an earlier decision from the Family Court.
The initial ruling had denied the couple&rsquo;s application to bypass the cooling period mandated under the Hindu Marriage Act. The couple, who wed in December 2020 and have been separated since June 2022, filed for divorce by mutual consent in February 2025, alongside a request to expedite the process.
Per Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, a cooling-off period is intended to allow couples time for potential reconciliation.
However, the court found this provision unnecessary given Chahal and Dhanashree's prolonged separation of over two years, deeming the prerequisite fulfilled in spirit.
Complications arose when the Family Court initially refused to waive the cooling period due to partial compliance with financial terms agreed upon by the couple.
According to the terms, Chahal was to provide Dhanashree a permanent alimony totaling Rs 4.75 crore; however, only Rs 2.37 crore had been transferred at that point. This non-compliance led to the initial rejection of the waiver request.
Despite these setbacks, the Bombay High Court acknowledged the considerable duration spent apart by Chahal and Dhanashree, and their mutual consent for divorce, which inclined the court&rsquo;s decision towards allowing the waiver.
Consequently, the Family Court has been directed to reach a decision on the divorce petition promptly, ensuring no interference with Chahal&rsquo;s participation in the IPL season.
As the cricket season approaches, this legal resolution provides a timely relief for Chahal, allowing him to focus on his professional commitments with the Punjab Kings.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a crucial reminder that laws designed to protect women should not be misused to harass or extort husbands.
The court emphasized that alimony is meant to provide the dependent spouse with a reasonable standard of living, not to equalize financial disparities between former partners.
The judgment came in the context of a high-profile case involving tech professional Atul Subhas, who claimed that his estranged wife and her family had demanded a monthly maintenance of Rs 2 lakh, later increasing it to Rs 3 crore annually.
A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Pankaj Mitha, while dissolving the marriage on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown, directed the husband to pay Rs 12 crore as a full and final alimony settlement. The court stressed that maintenance should not be used as a tool for coercion or exploitation.
"The women need to be careful about the fact that these strict provisions of law in their hands are beneficial legislation for their welfare and not means to chastise, threaten, domineer or extort from their husbands," the bench remarked.
The wife had claimed her husband&rsquo;s net worth exceeded Rs 5,000 crore, with businesses and properties in both the US and India, and that he had paid his first wife at least Rs 500 crore during their separation, excluding a house in Virginia.
The court highlighted the importance of a balanced approach, considering not just the income of the husband, but also the wife&rsquo;s income, reasonable needs, and residential rights.
"We have serious reservations with the tendency of parties seeking maintenance or alimony as an equalisation of wealth with the other party. It is often seen that parties in their application for maintenance or alimony highlight the assets, status and income of their spouse, and then ask for an amount that can equal their wealth to that of the spouse," the court stated.
The bench further asked, "We wonder, would the wife be willing to seek equalisation of wealth with the husband if due to some unfortunate events post-separation, he has been rendered a pauper?"
The court also addressed concerns over the misuse of criminal complaints, noting instances where wives and their families use such complaints as leverage to pressure husbands and their families for financial demands.
The Supreme Court quashed the criminal cases filed by the wife against her estranged husband, sending a clear message about the need for fair and just use of legal provisions.

In a bizarre case, a man was allowed by a court to give Rs 55,000 in one and two rupee coins to his wife as maintenance dues for 11 months after his family brought the money filled in seven sacks to the court following his arrest for non-payment.
While the counsel for his wife objected to it, terming it &ldquo;mental harassment&rdquo;, the judge allowed the payment but asked the man to count the coins in court to make packets of Rs 1000 each and hand them over to her at the next hearing on June 26, according to lawyers from both sides. &nbsp;The couple's divorce case is being heard in a family court. The court had directed the husband, Dashrath Kumawat, to give the maintenance amount of Rs 5000 per month but he was not paying it for the last 11 months.
Dashrath, a resident of Harmada area in Jaipur, was arrested on June 17 after family court number 1 issued a recovery warrant against him for non-payment of maintenance.
&ldquo;Since the husband refused to give the amount, the police arrested him. The family court was closed due to holidays so he was produced in the link court of Additional District Judge (ADG)-number 8.
"In the court, the family members of Dashrath reached with coins worth Rs 55000 to give to his wife,&rdquo; Raman Gupta, the advocate of the husband, told PTI on Tuesday.
He said that the coins were in the denomination Re 1 and Rs 2 and were stuffed in seven sacks.
The advocate of his wife objected to this, but it was argued on behalf of the husband that these coins are legal tender and no one can refuse to accept them.
&ldquo;The court then allowed the husband to give the coins after counting them on the next hearing in the family court on June 26. Till then, the coins will remain in the custody of the court. The husband will have to count the coins and make packets of Rs 1000 each before handing them over to the wife in the court,&rdquo; he said.
Wife Seema Kumawat's advocate Ramprakash Kumawat said that giving coins to the woman was &ldquo;equal to mental harassment&rdquo;.
&ldquo;It was done in a preplanned manner just to harass the woman. However, the court has permitted him to give the coins,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

Private bodies cannot pronounce or certify dissolution of marriage by Khula.
"They are not courts or arbitrators of disputes. The courts have also frowned upon such practice...," the court held.
Such Khula certificates issued by private entities are hence invalid. "Khula is the form of divorce conferred upon wife similar to talaq conferred upon the husband." In his judgement on a writ petition by a man who prayed for quashing the Khula certificate issued to his wife, Justice C Saravanan quashed the impugned certificate issued in 2017 by Shariat Council, Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamath
The Madras High Court granted an interim stay in Bader Sayeed Vs Union of India, 2017 and restrained bodies such as the respondents in that matter (Kazis) from issuing certificates certifying dissolution of marriage by Khula, the judgment said.
