Website Dictionary.com that provides meanings and definitions of words has updated its list, adding over 300 new words. The online platform has also added new and updated definitions of some existing words.&nbsp;
There are 313 new words while definitions of 1,140 words have been revised and 130 new definitions have been added.
The website stated that the addition of a word to the dictionary is not an endorsement, but rather a documentation of its use in the real world.&nbsp;
'Our mission is to be descriptive&mdash;we work to describe and document language as it is really used (not just how we or others may want it to be used).' Some new words include 'nearlywed', 'tifo', 'hellscape'.&nbsp; 'Nearlywed' which has been modeled on the word 'newlywed', often used in the plural to refer to a recently married couple has been defined by Dictionary.com as a person who lives with 'another in a life partnership, sometimes engaged with no planned wedding date, sometimes with no intention of ever marrying'. A word which has been dated back to the late 1890s, 'hellscape' was added to the list following a massive increase in recent years. The website said that the word can be used to define a 'a place or time that is hopeless, unbearable, or irredeemable'. Words added in the lexicon ranged from identity to pop culture, health, gaming as well as sport jargon.&nbsp; 'The pace with which language adapts to the changes is relentless&mdash;with new and newly prominent ways of referring to a wild variety of very specific things,' the website said.&nbsp; Similar to the widely known term 'southpaw', the word 'northpaw' was instated to define a sportsperson who competes professionally as a right-hander.&nbsp; An Italian term called 'typhus' (fever) also made it to the mix translating figuratively to 'fevered, impassioned support'.
The word was modified to be read as 'tifo' and defined as 'a coordinated display, including large banners, flags, and sometimes signs or cards, executed cooperatively or performed in unison by the most fervent supporters and ultra fans in the stadium.' 'Our lexicographers observe it all, documenting language change wherever it's happening and defining the terms that help us to understand our times. The most recent additions to Dictionary.com come from just about everywhere, spanning the multiverse-like complexity of modern life.' Dictionary.com wrote.&nbsp;

Oxford Dictionaries said Monday that &ldquo;goblin mode&rdquo; has been selected by online vote as its word of the year.
It defines the term as &ldquo;a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.&rdquo; First seen on Twitter in 2009, &ldquo;goblin mode&rdquo; gained popularity in 2022 as people around the world emerged uncertainly from pandemic lockdowns.
&ldquo;Given the year we've just experienced, goblin mode' resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point,&rdquo; said Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl.

The word of the year is intended to reflect &ldquo;the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months.&rdquo; For the first time this year's winning phrase was chosen by public vote, from among three finalists selected by Oxford Languages lexicographers: goblin mode, metaverse and the hashtag IStandWith.
Despite being relatively unknown offline, goblin mode was the overwhelming favourite, winning 93% of the more than 340,000 votes cast.
The choice is more evidence of a world unsettled after years of pandemic turmoil, and by the huge changes in behaviour and politics brought by social media.
Last week Merriam-Webster announced that its word of the year is &ldquo;gaslighting&rdquo; &mdash; psychological manipulation intended to make a person question the validity of their own thoughts.
In 2021 the Oxford word of the year was &ldquo;vax&rdquo; and Merriam-Webster's was &ldquo;vaccine&rdquo;.

According to America's oldest dictionary publisher, searches for the word Gaslighting on its website increased by 1,740% in 2022 "with high interest throughout the year".
The word was in the top 50 words looked up on the Merriam-Webster's website to earn top dog word of the year status.
Merriam-Webster dictionary explains gaslighting as psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator.

'Misinformation' is Dictionary.com's 2018 Word of The Year. The spread of false information like wildfire across the globe, has led to the selection of the word. Misinformation though is not the same as disinformation, the latter is to deliberately mislead. Misinformation has grown in popularity due to social media, especially keeping the recent Facebook controversy in mind.  Representation, self-made and backlash are the runners-up words.

According to the Collins Dictionary, 'Single-use' is the Word of the Year for 2018. The use of 'single-use' has increased since 2013. Collins announces the word of the year based on a specific trend across the world. The word 'single-use' sparked global interest due to various images like BBC’s Blue Planet II, that showed plastic thrown in the middle of oceans and damaging the environment. The steady rise in public awareness on environmental issues led to the naming of 'single-use' as the Word of the Year.

Idiocracy, although a part of our vocabulary since times immemorial, has now officially been recognised as a word by the Oxford English Dictionary. As a part of the new addition, the word stands for a society or a government formed out of people considered ignorant. 1400 other words too were officially recognised along with idiocracy. "Fam", a short for family, made it to the list.
