Speaking to reporters in Dharamshala on Saturday, Tibetan spritual leader Dalai Lama reitered that he was not seeking independence from China, but meaningful autonomy and preservation of the Tibetan Buddhist culture. He added that he was open to negotiations with the Chinese government.&nbsp;
"I am always open to talk. Now China also realises that the spirit of the Tibetan people is very strong. So, in order to deal with Tibetan problems, they want to contact me. I am also ready. We are not seeking independence. We have decided since many years that we remain part of the People's Republic of China...Now China is changing. The Chinese, officially or unofficially, want to contact me," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called up His Holiness the Dalai Lama to wish him a long and healthy life on his 86th birthday. PM Modi shared on Twitter that he has conveyed his greetings to His Holiness.
The Prime Minister had skipped wishing His Holiness in 2020 after India was drawn into a border standoff along the LAC with China. In 2019, the Prime Minister had sent a private birthday greeting to the Dalai Lama.
China does not accept the Dalai Lama's government-in-exile in India. The Tibetan religious leader, the Dalai Lama has been living in exile in Dharamsala for over sixty years.
