The West Bengal government on Saturday evacuated thousands of people in South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts and urged tourists in popular sea resorts to stay away from beaches, as cyclone ‘Jawad’ loomed large over the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast.
The administration evacuated around 11,000 people from the coastal areas to safer locations, while boats with fishermen returned to the shore in Kakdwip, Digha, Shankarpur and other coastal belts, an official said. A total of 19 teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in the state in the wake of the cyclone.
Several places in the metropolis, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah and Hooghly districts received light rainfall since morning, the weather office said. It has predicted heavy rain in the next two days. 
The cyclone is expected to make landfall around noon on Sunday near Puri but it is likely to weaken into a deep depression by then.

Heavy showers and high-speed winds lashed vast swathes of coastal Odisha on Saturday as Cyclone Jawad moved along the coast. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is also predicted in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The cyclone, which is expected to make landfall near Puri on Sunday noon, is likely to weaken gradually and move nearly northwards during the next 12 hours and then north-northeastwards along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around 5th December noon as a Deep Depression.Schools across 19 districts in Odisha will remain closed due to heavy rainfall, ANI reported.An ongoing classical dance festival and a sand art event in Puri district were called off on Friday following the formation of a cyclonic storm.Meanwhile in Andhra Pradesh, over 54,008 people from the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam have been evacuated. As many as 11 NDRF, 5 SDRF, 6 Coast Guard, and 10 Marine Police teams have been deployed in three districts of Andhra Pradesh as a precautionary measure.

The IMD said the weather system was moving at a speed of 32 kmph and lay 580 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 670 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, and 760 km south-southeast of Paradip at 5.30 am on Friday.
The storm, once developed, will be called Jawad (pronounced Jowad), as named by Saudi Arabia. After Yaas in May and Gulab in September, this will be the third cyclone headed towards the east coast this year.
The weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal Odisha. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh. An orange alert has been issued in the two states today.
