World Cotton Day, October 7, promotes sustainable cotton's global importance, from agriculture to fashion.

World Cotton Day is observed every year on 7th October dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the importance of cotton as a global commodity.&nbsp; It provides an opportunity to highlight the significance of cotton in agriculture, trade, and the global economy, as well as its impact on various aspects of people's lives, particularly in developing countries.
The 2023 celebration featured a joint event in Vienna, under the theme &ldquo;Making cotton fair and sustainable for all, from farm to fashion&rdquo;.

World Cotton Day, officially recognized in a UN General Assembly resolution in 2021, responded to a proposal submitted by the so-called Cotton-4 countries, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali, which are among the main producers of the crop in sub-Saharan Africa.
Being renewable and biodegradable, cotton is the most environmentally friendly raw material for the textile industry as compared to its synthetic alternatives.

Cotton originates from the natural fibers of cotton plants, primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions. The term "cotton" has its roots in the Arabic word 'quton,' but the earliest cotton production took place in India, which remains the world's leading producer.
Renewable and biodegradable, cotton stands out as the textile industry's most eco-friendly raw material when compared to synthetic alternatives. Cotton plants boast an extensive growth period, which can span up to 200 days, typically beginning between December and March. These plants thrive in warm climates with long growing seasons.
Contrary to common belief, cotton is not a water-intensive crop; it's a xerophyte capable of flourishing in dry, arid environments. Remarkably, only 3 percent of the world's land is dedicated to cotton cultivation, yet it fulfills 27 percent of global textile demands.

Amid high demand and low production output, cotton prices are expected to touch ₹75,000 per candy by the middle of 2023

Cotton prices are likely to touch ₹75,000 per candy by the middle of 2023, as the demand rise and crop output falls. Cotton Association of India's president Atul Ganatra has said that, India&rsquo;s low cotton production with higher consumption will soon change its status from a net exporter to an import country.
As per Business Line, currently, the cotton prices trade around ₹62,500&ndash;63,000 per candy and are expected to rise further steadily with arrivals drying up. The rise in price is anticipated due to the reduction in export quantity this year. While India exported 42 lakh bales last year, this year it is expected to fall between 30-25 lakh bales. Until March, India has exported 12 lakh bales of cotton.
The global cotton prices are trading at a four-month low due to weak demand. However, Indian mills haven't seen a slump in demand due to higher cotton consumption. The global cotton price outlook remains uncertain for the year 2023-24. Planted acreage is expected to decrease due to high input costs and competition from other crops globally.

A kind variety of edible cottonseeds created by Dr. Keerti Rathor, an AgriLife Research plant biotechnologist, could feed millions and help in eradicating protein malnutrition. Cottonseeds are usually not fit for consumption, as they produce a toxin called gossypol, but Dr. Rathore used a new technology to stop the plant from producing this toxic chemical and thereby creating edible cottonseeds. The seeds reportedly taste like hummus. The US Department of Agriculture recently approved these genetically engineered seeds.
