A new kind of edible cottonseeds could feed millions

A kind variety of edible cottonseeds created by Dr. Keerti Rathor, an AgriLife Research plant biotechnologist, could feed millions and help in eradicating protein malnutrition. Cottonseeds are usually not fit for consumption, as they produce a toxin called gossypol, but Dr. Rathore used a new technology to stop the plant from producing this toxic chemical and thereby creating edible cottonseeds. The seeds reportedly taste like hummus. The US Department of Agriculture recently approved these genetically engineered seeds.
