Changing alliance to NPP-BJP angered HSPDP member's: burnt its MLA's office

HSPDP MLA Methodius Dkhar's office in Shillong was set on fire allegedly by members of his own party as he supported the NPP-BJP coalition, senior NPP leader Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.
Dkhar along with party MLA Shakliar Warjri on Friday pledged support to the NPP-BJP alliance, which staked claim to form the next government in the state under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma.
Tynsong, the outgoing deputy chief minister, told PTI that angry supporters of Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) went to Dkhar's office in the Laitumkhrah area of the city on Friday night and set it on fire.
"Firefighters reached there on time and doused the flames," he said.
The HSPDP decided to form an alliance with the TMC and Congress, but its two MLAs went ahead and supported the NPP-BJP coalition.
Tynsong said that those indulging in such incidents must respect the people's mandate.
He blamed the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) for it.
"These people are trying to snatch the constitutional rights of the MLAs. We will not allow such activities to happen. This is against the rights of the people," he said.
Angry HSPDP supporters burnt effigies of the two MLAs in the Motphran area here on Saturday.
The gathering was attended by leaders of the HITO and the HYC who are demanding a chief minister from the Khasi community.&nbsp;

"We have an absolute majority. The BJP has already extended its support.

NPP chief Conrad K Sangma on Friday met Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan and staked a claim to form the government in the northeastern state.
Sangma, the outgoing chief minister, claimed that he has an "absolute majority with 32 MLAs" on his side in the 60-member assembly but refused to give details of supporting parties.
Addressing a press conference before going to Raj Bhawan, Sangma said, "We have an absolute majority. The BJP has already extended its support. Some others have also given their support." The NPP emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya on Thursday, bagging 26 seats out of the 59 constituencies that went to polls on February 27.
The UDP, which was NPP's ally in the Conrad K Sangma government, emerged as the second-largest party, winning 11 constituencies. It won only six seats in the 2018 polls.
The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won five seats each, while the BJP secured two constituencies.
The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the People's Democratic Front won two seats each. Two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.

"I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We are grateful to them. We are still short of the numbers and are waiting for the final results, after which we will decide on the way forward," the CM said said.

He is seeking re-election from South Tura assembly seat in the February 27 elections.

Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party president Conrad K Sangma on Saturday filed his nomination papers from South Tura assembly constituency in West Garo Hills district.
Sangma, who was accompanied by hundreds of NPP supporters to the office of the returning officer of the district, exuded confidence that his party will have the "single-largest majority" in the upcoming polls to the 60-member assembly.
He is seeking re-election from South Tura assembly seat in the February 27 elections.
&ldquo;The NPP will have the single-largest majority. We are confident and moving ahead with the development works undertaken in the last five years.
"The foundation has been laid in various sectors, and it is time to take things to the next level. The continuity is important so that we achieve goals that we have set,&rdquo; he told reporters.

Noting that the opposition TMC is "based out of West Bengal", Sangma alleged that it is "getting disintegrated day by day".
People of Meghalaya do not trust &ldquo;outsiders&rdquo; - be it the BJP or the TMC.

The BJP on Thursday announced Bernard N Marak, its state unit vice-president and a former militant leader, as its official candidate against Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in South Tura constituency.
The saffron party will contest all the 60 seats in the Meghalaya assembly and announced names of all its candidates on Thursday.
It had last month decided to break away from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by Conrad Sangma and go it alone in the state election, a party spokesman said in Shillong.
Among those whose names featured in the list were BJP's two sitting MLAs &ndash; Sanbor Shullai and A L Hek who will contest from South Shillong and Pynthorukhrah constituencies in the city, he said.
Sitting MLAs who quit other parties in the past few months and joined BJP were also accommodated in the list.&nbsp;
State BJP president Ernest Mawrie who unsuccessfully contested from Nongthymmai constituency in 2018 will contest from West Shillong constituency. M H Kharkrang, the party spokesperson, will contest from North Shillong constituency, according to the party.
The party also fielded seven women candidates, including former NPP MLA Ferlin Sangma, the spokesman said.

BJP's northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha told reporters on Thursday that the party will fight the Meghalaya polls under the campaign tagline of "M-Power" (Modi power), asserting that people of the state have trust in PM Modi.

The BJP will contest on all 60 seats of the Meghalaya Assembly and fight the Nagaland elections in an alliance with the state's ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, contesting on 20 of 60 seats.
BJP secretary and its northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha told reporters on Thursday that the party will fight the Meghalaya polls under the campaign tagline of "M-Power" (Modi power), asserting that people of the state have trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They believe Modi is the only person who can ensure a corruption-free government and fast track development, he said.
Nagaland and Meghalaya BJP chief Temjen Imna Along and Ernest Mawrie, respectively also named party candidates approved by the party's central election committee.
Sinha claimed that people in the northeastern states are fed up of corruption and slow pace of development, even though central government schemes have reached them. They, though, believe that their implementation could have been better, he said.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party is in power in Meghalaya. Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a part of his government, the relations between the two parties have long been far from smooth. The BJP had contested on 47 seats in the 2018 assembly polls and had won two.

Sinha expressed confidence that the saffron party will do well in the state polls and noted that Modi has visited the northeast region over 50 times in his term. This is more than the visits of all the previous prime ministers put together, he said, adding that Modi has always been to the region with some development package.
The prime minister has converted the 'Look East' policy into 'act policy'. The central government has worked to execute the HIRA (highways, internet connectivity, roadways and airport) model in the region which has also witnessed an era of peace, Sinha said.
"In the true sense, Modi has married regional aspiration of the northeast with our national priorities," he said.
Nalin Kohli, BJP's in-charge for Nagaland, said, "We believe Modi's work, focus on development and peace are the critical factors which will drive Nagaland's voters." Both the states will go to polls on February 27 and counting of votes is due for March 2.

Lyngdoh led in singing the carol 'Felis Navidad' with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, while former CM Mukul Sangma, and ex-speaker and state TMC chief Charles Pyngrope joined in.
"Was delighted to join Hon'ble Speaker, Hon'ble Leader of Opposition & Hon'ble MLA in singing the #Christmas carol at the Pre-Christmas Celebration joined by our colleagues. #Meghalaya sends its Christmas blessings to each of you," the chief minister tweeted.
Others who attended the party are Congress Legislature Party leader Ampareen Lyngdoh, cabinet ministers Kyrmen Shylla and Sniawbhalang Dhar.
An official of the Assembly Secretariat said the pre-Christmas party was organised to bring together the legislators of different political parties during the festive season.

The killings of 14 civilians in army firing in Nagaland's Mon has led to renewed calls of repealing Armed Forces Special Powers Act from north-eastern states of India. 
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, whose party is in alliance the BJP in the state, told media on Monday morning that he asked the Modi govt to repeal AFSPA from Nagaland. 
He later tweeted that Nagaland and the Naga people have always opposed AFSPA and it should be repealed. 
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma also made a strong appeal for the appeal of the act and wrote 'AFSPA should be repealed'. Sangma's party is also a BJP ally in the state. 
AFSPA provides the defence services and the central paramilitary forces special powers to conduct operations in 'disturbed areas', including arresting people without warrant and opening fire. It also gives them immunity against any prosecution for such actions.
