Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "only talking about Muslims", and said the poor have more children because of their economic conditions.
Modi was frustrated after sensing that the opposition's INDIA bloc was heading for a majority, and hence he was now talking about "Mangalsutra and Muslims", Kharge claimed at a rally in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district.
Campaigning for Shivkumar Dahariya, Congress' candidate from Janjgir-Champa Lok Sabha constituency, he also said the BJP was seeking to win more than 400 Lok Sabha seats not for the welfare of the poor but to take away their rights.
"We are heading for a majority, that is why he (Modi) now talks about 'Mangalsutra' and Muslims. He says we will steal your wealth and give it to those who have more children. Poor people always have more children. Do only Muslims have them?" he asked.
He himself has five children but he was the only son of his parents, the Congress president said, adding that his mother, sister and uncle died when their house was set on fire.
Only his father and him were left, and "my father told me I am his only son and he wanted to see my children," Kharge said.
"Poor people have (more) children as they do not have wealth. But why do you (Modi) only keep talking about Muslims? Muslims belong to this country," he said, asking people not to get misled as "we have to build the country by taking everyone together, no like them (BJP) by breaking it." During an election rally in Rajasthan, PM Modi had said that if Congress came to power it would redistribute people's wealth to those who have more children and to the infiltrators. He had also cited former prime minister Manmohan Singh's remark that Muslims had the first claim on the country's resources.
On Modi's claim that Congress was planning to seize people's wealth including even women's mangalsutra, Kharge asked, "We ruled the country for 55 years, but did we snatch anyone's 'mangalsutra' or misuse the ED (Enforcement Directorate), IT (Income Tax) to put people behind bars?" The prime minister was speaking lies and misleading people, he alleged, claiming that Modi speaks about "Hindu-Muslim" (issues) even where Muslims have zero presence.
"Nowadays he is saying Congress wants to do X-ray of gold in every house and lands and it will not leave even your `mangalsutra'. We have said we want to conduct a caste census to assess the conditions of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward classes so that their situation can be improved, but he made fun of it," Kharge said.
If such a prime minister ruled for five more years, the country will be destroyed, the Congress president said.
"He (Modi) says 'sabka sath, sabka vikas'. He takes support of everyone but never does their 'vikas' (development). He does their 'satyanash' (destruction). He implemented demonetisation and did not support anyone during the Covid (epidemic)," Kharge added.
Those who were given "injections" (apparently referring to vaccines) during the COVID-19 epidemic were still facing health problems, and laboratories have reported that heart attack cases increased in India as a result of some defect in the medicine, but the Union government does not have any answer on this issue, Kharge claimed.
"This election is being fought to keep India united and save the Constitution and democracy. Modi and his followers say again and again, give us a 400-plus figure. They are seeking 400-plus seats not for the welfare of the poor, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward people....They are seeking it to take away the poor people's rights," he alleged.
The Congress veteran also asked why RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had to clarify that they were not going to change the Constitution or end reservations if some BJP leader had not talked about such plans earlier.
BJP talks about the poor, but "increases the income" of industrialists Adani and Ambani, he claimed.
"He (Modi) compares (himself) with former prime ministers Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Rajiv Gandhi. You do not stand anywhere in their comparison....They gave big factories and PSUs to the country, what did you give?" he asked.
Congress won freedom for the country, Nehru protected its democracy and Dr B R Ambedkar drafted a good Constitution, Kharge said, adding, "Modi ji, you are alive and became prime minister because of Congress which saved the Constitution, democracy and helped the poor. We introduced Green Revolution and White Revolution." Polling will be held in Janjgir-Champa on May 7.&nbsp;

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought time from him to explain in person the party's 'Nyay Patra'.
In his two-page letter, he told the prime minister that he is being misinformed by his advisors about things that are not even written in the 'Nyay Patra' -- the Congress' manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.
The letter comes after the prime minister attacked the Congress over its manifesto, alleging that the party aims to "redistribute the wealth" of people and give it away to "infiltrators".
Modi also accused the Congress of snatching women's "mangalsutra".
In his letter, Kharge said the Congress' 'Nyay Patra' aims at providing "nyay (justice)" to the youngsters, women, farmers, labourers and marginalised people across all castes and communities.
"It has become your habit to seize on a few words taken out of context and create a communal divide. You are lowering the dignity of the chair by speaking in this manner," he said.
"You are being misinformed by your advisors about things that are not even written in our manifesto. I would be more than happy to meet you in person to explain our 'Nyay Patra' so that, as prime minister of the country, you don't make any statements that are false," he added.
The Congress chief also said he is neither shocked nor surprised by the language used by the prime minister in his recent speeches.
"It was expected that you and other leaders from your party would start speaking in this manner after you saw the dismal performance of the BJP in the first phase of the elections," Kharge said in the letter.
The Congress has been talking about the deprived poor and their rights ("nyay"), he said and added, "We are aware that you and your government do not have any concern for the poor and dispossessed." "Your 'suit-boot ki sarkar' works for the corporates whose taxes you reduced while the salaried class pays higher taxes. The poor pay GST even on food and salt and the rich corporate claim GST refunds. That is why, when we talk of inequality between the rich and the poor, you are purposely equating it with Hindu and Muslim," Kharge claimed.
"Our manifesto is for the people of India -- whether they are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist. I think you have still not forgotten your pre-Independence allies the Muslim League and colonial masters," he charged.
Kharge claimed the Congress has always served to empower the poor while "you have ruled to snatch the earnings and wealth of the poor".
He said in the letter, "Your government was the one who used demonetisation as an 'organised loot and legalised plunder' to transfer the money deposited by the poor in the banks to the rich in the form of loans. Then, as part a of conscious design, these loans were surreptitiously written off by your government. The lakhs of crores of corporate loans that your government has written off since 2014 is a transfer of wealth from poor to rich. No farmer's loans, artisan's loans, MSME loans or student loans were waived off by you." "You and your government have repeatedly turned away from the atrocities that the poor and backward women are facing &hellip; Today, you talk about their 'mangalsutra'. Isn't your government responsible for the atrocities against women in Manipur, against Dalit girls, garlanding of rapists? When farmers are committing suicide under your government, how are you protecting their wives and children?," Kharge asked.
The Congress chief suggested that Modi read about "Nari Nyay" that, he said, the party will implement when its comes to power.
Kharge also advised the prime minister to not "get carried away by your own people who are clapping at your speeches".
"They are not allowing you to hear the crores of right-thinking citizens who are disappointed by your speeches," the Congress chief said.
Sharing Kharge's letter on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji has just written to the prime minister, saying that he would be happy to meet him to explain the reality of the Congress' 'Nyay Patra', which Mr Modi may have missed in his persistent efforts to distort and defame it."&nbsp;

Facing an attack by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor defended the wealth redistribution promise in the party's Lok Sabha poll manifesto.
In a conversation with Editorji's Vikram Chandra, Tharoor pointed out that the Congress is "the party of liberalization" that opened up the economy under Dr. Manmohan Singh.
He argued that "the fruits of that liberalization which accrue to the government in the form of increased revenue must be distributed to those who are being marginalised, left behind or oppressed."
"Those people will, in turn, get a leg up from the state to become participants in the private sector economy. I mean, it's in the interest of everybody," Tharoor said.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP, who is seeking a fourth term from seat, insisted that the Congress is pro-business, "provided, we are socially responsible in how we spend the resources."
"How do we spend the taxpayers money that accrue to us as revenue from the growing economy is where we differ from the BJP," the Congress leader said.
He accused the BJP of spending the government's money "in ways that benefit a very, very small section of society." He said the Congress wants to spend the taxpayers money "in helping those who have little or nothing, and in giving them an opportunity to participate fully" in the economy.
Tharoor said what the Congress has promised in its manifesto is "social justice."

The manifesto, focusing on five "pillars of justice" and 25 guarantees under them, was released at the AICC headquarters in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
In the document titled Nyay Patra, the opposition party said it would implement 10 per cent quota in jobs, educational institutions for economically weaker sections (EWS) for all castes, communities without discrimination if it comes to power.
It also promised to fill nearly 30 lakh vacancies in sanctioned posts at various levels in the central government and said the Rajasthan model of cashless insurance of up to Rs 25 lakh will be adopted for universal healthcare.
The Congress will pass a constitutional amendment to raise the 50 per cent cap on reservations for SC, ST and OBC if it comes to power in the general elections beginning April 19, the party promised.
The Congress also said it will conduct a nationwide socio-economic and caste census.
Appealing to people to look beyond religion, language, caste and choose wisely to install a democratic government, the party said the general elections present an opportunity to radically the change the style of governance that has been in evidence over the past decade.
It said it guarantees a new 'right to apprenticeship act' to provide one-year apprenticeship to every diploma holder or graduate below age of 25.
Besides, it said it will give legal guarantee to Minimum Support Prices (MSP) announced by the government every year as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission.
"We will immediately restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir," the party stated in the manifesto.
It said it will launch an urban employment programme guaranteeing work for urban poor in reconstruction, renewal of urban infrastructure.
The party said in the document that it would abolish the Agnipath programme and direct the armed forces to resume normal recruitment to achieve full sanctioned strength.
"I urge everyone to have a close look at our manifesto and you will see a 'shandaar tasveer' (beautiful picture) of our country in it," the Congress president said while addressing the gathering.
"We will open the doors to the poor when we come to power....PM Modi is taking our people and claiming '400 Paar' MPs," Kharge added.
Only those who have done something and have fear are quitting the party to join the BJP, he said.

For the first time, the Congress will promise the &lsquo;right to employment&rsquo; for youth as part of its poll manifesto. Notably, under its "Hissedari Nyay", the party is likely to reiterate its promise of a social, economic and caste census.&nbsp;
The Congress, however, may walk back on its promise to revert to the Old Pension Scheme, according to The Indian Express.
The manifesto will likely promise scrapping of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) that empowers the Directorate of Enforcement (ED). The Congress also wishes to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
