Bangladesh witnessed 2,442 incidents of communal violence over a span of 330 days from August 4 last year, when political unrest peaked, leading to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government, a minority advocacy group in the country said on Thursday.
"Most of these violent incidents happened between August 4 and August 20 last year," the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council said in a statement released at a press conference at the National Press Club here.
The minority communities faced 2,442 incidents of communal violence over a span of 330 days from August 4, 2024, it said.
The nature of violence ranged from murders and sexual assaults, including gang rapes, to attacks on places of worship, seizing homes and businesses, arrests on charges of alleged defamation of religion, and forced removals of minorities from organisations, the statement said.
Victims included men, women, and adolescents belonging to minority groups.
The perpetrators have largely evaded justice, with the interim government "refusing to acknowledge" the incidents and "dismissing them as politically motivated," the statement said.
A senior Council leader, Narmal Rosario, said the ongoing reform initiatives by the interim government have repeatedly excluded minority communities, "which is the most frustrating factor for us&rdquo;.
&ldquo;We want to walk together with all,&rdquo; he emphasised.
Another leader, Nimchandra Bhoumik, said, "The division (within the society) was not a pleasant matter for anyone.&rdquo; &ldquo;The government, in fact, ignores the incidents of repression of minorities. We demand proper justice,&rdquo; acting general secretary of the council, Manindra Kumar Nath, said.
As per the 2022 census, Hindus are the largest minority community in Bangladesh at 7.95% of the total population, followed by Buddhists (0.61%), Christians (0.30%), and others (0.12%).

"We&rsquo;ve been very clear in our engagement with all Bangladeshi leaders that protection of religious and ethnic minorities is absolutely critical, and the leaders of the interim government have repeatedly committed to providing security to all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity," he said.
"We want to hold them to that," Kirby said in response to a question.
Over the past few weeks, Indian Americans have held peaceful protests and marches in several cities, including in front of the White House, in Chicago, New York, SFO, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta, urging Biden to help stop alleged brutalities against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to address the issue of violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, in Bangladesh during the confirmation hearing of Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state.
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Senator Rubio for the top diplomatic position. The date of his confirmation hearing has not been announced yet.
"As targeted violence against Hindus and other minorities continues amid the disorder in Bangladesh, I urge the members of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations to address this crisis directly during the upcoming hearings to confirm Senator Rubio as the next US secretary of state," Krishnamoorthi said.
Over the weekend, a large number of Indian-Americans held a march from the White House to the US Capitol over alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Raising slogans like &ldquo;We want Justice&rdquo; and &ldquo;Protect Hindus&rdquo;, the demonstrators urged the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration to ask the new government in Bangladesh to take steps to protect Hindus and also initiate action against those responsible for this.
"The Bangladeshi Hindu community and the larger Hindu diaspora from the Indian subcontinent have come in support of the Bangladesh Hindu community because there is continuing violence going on in Bangladesh, specifically in Chittagong and Rangpur area, as well as in some other parts of the country," said Utsav Chakrabarti of HinduACTion.

Reached by telephone by AFP, a resident confirmed the attacks and said that his 76-year-old father was among the victims.
"The bandits set fire to his body. The family cannot even organize a burial for him since we were unable to recover the body," he told AFP on condition of anonymity so as not to compromise the safety of other relatives.
"I also fear for their lives," he said. "I will try to get them out."

Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves and is a mainstay of the country's culture. It was banned during French colonial rule and only recognized as an official religion by the Haitian government in 2003.
While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by other religions.
Haiti has suffered from decades of instability but the situation escalated in February when armed groups launched coordinated attacks in the capital to overthrow then-prime minister Ariel Henry.
Gangs now control 80 percent of the city. Despite a Kenyan-led police support mission, backed by the United States and UN, violence has continued to soar.
The UN chief called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the weekend massacre and also reiterated calls for more international support to assist Haitian police in their battle against the gangs.
More than 700,000 people are internally displaced in Haiti, half of them children; added to this are 5,000 forced from their homes by the weekend massacre, said the International Organization for Migration.
The latest killings bring the death toll this year in Haiti to around 5,000 people, according to the United Nations.

One person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a youth from minority community in Surathkal here, police said on Sunday.
The person arrested is the owner of the car that is said to have been used by the culprits for the crime.
"More than 51 people have been inquired into in connection with the murder. We got the traces of a car while scanning the CCTV footage- White Hyundai Eon car- on the basis of footage and registration number we had taken eight cars into custody and inquired its owners," Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.
Speaking to reporters here, he said, based on available information and inquiry, the owner of one specific car has been taken into custody on the outskirts of Surathkal last evening.
"During the inquiry he has disclosed certain information regarding who took the car from him... Now he will be presented before the court and taken into custody. He will be further questioned from which we may get further information on those involved," he said adding that based on the information gathered so far, police teams are at work to nab the culprits.
Mohammed Fazil (23) was hacked to death on July 28 by three to four miscreants at Surathkal near here.

The incident took place in Vanzaravas area on Monday night, police said.

Around 35 people were reportedly injured in the violence. One person in critical condition was rushed to Jaipur, while around 10 people were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
A curfew has been imposed in Karauli, and over 600 police personnel with around 50 senior officers have been posted to keep the situation in check, as per a PTI report.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted that he had spoken to the state police chief and ordered strict action against rioters.
