Unseasonal rains have made this summer a challenging one for beverages major Coca-Cola India although sales became better as the season progressed, according to Vice President Sundeep Bajoria.
The company also believes that consumers will not jump the gun on the issue of the artificial sweetener aspartame, which according to reports may be declared "possibly carcinogenic to humans".
The current summer season was "challenging" due to weather changes and drop in temperature. However, the company's performance in the summer season was better when it exited than it entered, said.
"It was one of the challenging summer seasons, but we ended better from where we started off," he said on the sidelines of an event organised hereby the Indian Beverage Association.
There is no way out of such sudden change in the weather conditions and the country has seen summer rains after every few years, he said, adding the beverage players have to make sure that they are better connected with the consumers.
Bajoria did not elaborate the challenge the company faced but said it was across its beverage products including fizz and fruit juices.
Summer season would remain to be a big driver of consumption for the beverage industry, particularly for away-from-home channels, he added.
When asked about the reports over aspartame, which is used in Diet Coke as an artificial sweetener, he declined to comment.
According to him, this is based on some leaks. "Let's wait for the new report and we will know how it is and then will be in a better position to actually talk about..., Bajoria said.
Bajoria also denied any impact on the sales and said consumers are now very savvy and smart and "are so much used to a lot of different views and they are able to move on".
"I think everyone the consumers, even the discerning ones, would be waiting for the reality and truth," he said, adding, "There is no reaction from the regulators from India and no reaction from any of the global regulators. I do not see consumer jumping the gun," he said.
The company would wait for the "truth to be out fully and we will be in shape...".
Coca-Cola has plans to roll out low-sugar/no-sugar variants across its brands in India, which is a big market for the company for its aerated drinks.
"Choice would be always there," he said, adding, "We have a lot of plans. The pipeline is very busy. The sequence of which one comes first and which one comes later depends on a lot of factors not only on a leak but supply chain readiness and bottler alignment etc." Over the entry of new entrants in the sector, he said: "We welcome competition. After a long time, beverage in India has started to attract investments and new players." This is the validation that Coca-Cola is on the right track and the investment are being made at the right place, he said, adding that there is enough space for growth as the industry is at a nascent stage.
"We are still at a very-very nascent stage as per the development of beverage as the industry is concerned. Competition is fantastic," he said, adding, "It does not impact pricing."

Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd (JFL), the company that operates Domino's Pizza in India, announced on April 17th that Coca-Cola India Private Ltd has acquired a 15% stake in its associate company, Hashtag Loyalty Private Ltd, for INR 104.68 crore. As a result, JFL's stake in Hashtag has decreased from 35% to 29.75% on a fully diluted basis. Hashtag raised the capital at a pre-money valuation of INR 104.68 crore, as confirmed in an exchange filing.
JFL also stated that as part of the transaction, they have entered into a shareholders agreement with Hashtag, the new investor, and existing investors of Hashtag, and that there has been no adverse change in the rights granted to JFL, as previously disclosed in their stock exchange disclosure on October 27, 2021, when they initially acquired the stake. JFL clarified that this transaction is not a related party transaction.
JFL is the exclusive master franchise for developing and operating the Domino's Pizza brand in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal. They also hold franchise rights for the American fast-food chain 'Popeyes' in India. JFL recently opened four new stores, bringing the total store count to 12 in Bengaluru.
In terms of financials, JFL reported a decline of 39.66% in consolidated net profit, amounting to INR 80.36 crore for the third quarter ending on December 31, 2022. This is compared to a consolidated net profit of INR 133.19 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, as reported by CNBC TV 18.

According to a report by ET, the strategic investment will give a direct edge to Coca-Cola over its rivals- Zomato and Swiggy, and push consumers to order only Coca-Cola beverages along with the food orders. They will also help consumers customise orders, buy package deals, meal combinations and loyalty codes.
Set up in 2020, Thrive is a food search and delivery platform that competes directly with Swiggy and Zomato. The size of the deal is, however, unknown. Jubilant Foodworks that holds the master franchise of Domino&rsquo;s in India, and payments company Razorpay are two among its list of investors.&nbsp;

It was found in the study that carbonated drinks may increase testosterone levels in men. The study was published in the journal Acta Endocrinol, which mentioned that these drinks may also increase testicle size and overall sexual health in men.
The study was conducted on a group of male mice over a period of 15 days. The first group of male mice was only given water and the remaining group was given carbonated drinks. The researchers then conducted the blood tests, checked weight and also measured the diameter of their testicles.&nbsp;
The research found that the group of mice that just drank Coca-Cola and Pepsi, had improved testosterone secretion.&nbsp;
It was also mentioned in the study that further studies need to be conducted so that a link between carbonated drinks and fertility can be established.&nbsp;

Global soft drinks major Coca-Cola Company said its lemon and lime-flavoured soft drink Sprite has become a billion-dollar brand in the Indian market.
According to reports, the company has recorded a "strong" volume growth in its India business in the third quarter of 2022, helped by its sparkling soft drinks portfolio and fruit drink brand Maaza.
In the first half of 2022, Coca-Cola continued to strengthen as it gained share in sparkling offerings.
Earlier in January this year, Coca-Cola had said its Indian soft drink brand Thums Up had become a billion-dollar brand in 2021.
India is the fifth-largest market for Coca-Cola globally.
For the three months that ended September 30, 2022, overall, Coca-Cola Company's unit case volume grew by 4 per cent. Its developed markets grew in the mid-single digits while developing and emerging markets grew in low single digits.
"Growth in developed markets was led by Western Europe, Mexico and the United States, while growth in developing and emerging markets was led by India, China and Brazil," said an earnings statement from the Atlanta-headquartered firm.
Its sparkling soft drinks grew by 3 per cent, "primarily led by India, Mexico and China," it said.
Nutrition, juice, dairy and plant-based beverages also grew, led by Minute Maid Pulpy in China, Maaza in India and fairlife in the US market.
In the Asia Pacific market, which includes India, Coca-Cola's unit case volume expanded 9 per cent.
This was "driven by strong growth in India and China. Growth was led by sparkling soft drinks and hydration," said Coca-Cola.
