Mahanagar Gas has cut CNG prices by 2.50 rupees per kilograms in Mumbai area amid a fall in input costs. Effective March 6, CNG will be priced at 73.50 rupees per kilograms.
This marks the second reduction since October 2023. According to reports, Mahanagar Gas aims to promote natural gas usage by passing on cost savings promptly.
With CNG prices now offering 53% savings compared to petrol and 22% compared to diesel, the move is expected to boost natural gas consumption in transportation, aligning with India's goal of increasing natural gas share to 15% in the energy mix by 2030.
Mahanagar Gas, a leading city gas distributor, has been serving Mumbai for over 25 years. It holds the exclusive distribution rights for CNG and PNG in Mumbai and neighboring areas.
Additionally, it extends its services to approximately 20.5 lakh households and over 4,000 small commercial and industrial units in Raigad.

Making the sixth price hike since April this year, city gas distributor Mahanagar Gas (MGL) has announced the second price hike of Rs 6 per kilogram for CNG and by Rs 4 a unit for piped natural gas with immediate effect.
The price revision comes amidst rising prices of the natural gas at source both internationally as well as for domestically drilled gas. Rising prices have forced suppliers and distributors to cut down on industrial supplies since the past many weeks.
The utility said the price hike is to meet the shortfall in domestic gas allocation, as it forced to source additional market-priced natural gas to cater to the increasing requirement of CNG and PNG.
The last increase was effected on July 12 when the state-run utility hiked the retail price of CNG by Rs 6 per kilogram and PNG by Rs 3/SCM.
The Centre had increased the price of domestic and imported natural gas by over 110 per cent from April 1. This had completely offset the steep price reduction announced by the state by way of slashing VAT on these fuels to 3.5 per cent from 13.5 per cent from April 1.

India's road transport minister Nitin Gadkari recently predicted that petrol use would end in the country in the next 5 years. But when one looks at the huge number of cars in India, it seems next to impossible that petrol would one day not be used at all in the country.
So, is getting rid of petrol use possible? Are there viable alternatives? And will elimination of the use of petrol hurt or help India?
Before we look for answers to these questions, let's take a look at Nitin Gadkari's full statement. At an event in Akola, Maharashtra on 7 July, he said, "After 5 years, petrol will vanish from India. Your scooters, your cars will either run on green hydrogen, or ethanol flex engine, or CNG, or LNG. "

India is currently heavily dependent on fossil fuels. 70% of India's energy demand is met through fossil fuels. In June this year, India's fuel consumption stood at 18.67 million tonnes, an 18% increase over June 2021. This amount included various petroleum products - from petrol and diesel, to LPG, jet fuel, kerosene, and others.
The use of petrol has been rising faster than the average. Petrol use in India rose over 23% in June 2022 as compared to the same month a year ago. With petrol use rising, can the alternatives named by Gadkari really replace it, that too in just 5 years?
Let's take a detailed look at the other options.
First is hydrogen fuel cell technology in which hydrogen and oxygen are combined in an electrochemical reaction. This produces electricity which powers the car's electric motor.
Next is a flex engine which is compatible with multiple fuels. It might run on petrol, or ethanol, or a mixture of the two.
Then there is CNG, or compressed natural gas. This technology has been in India for many years, and it works like gasoline-powered combustion engines. However, CNG produces lower emissions, and has lower operational costs.
Then there is LNG, or liquefied natural gas which also works like gasoline or CNG. It is pitched as a cleaner and cheaper fuel for heavy commercial vehicles.
Hurdles and challenges aside, it would actually be good for India if petrol use ends, or is even considerably reduced. India is the world's third largest oil consuming and importing nation. India met over 85% of its oil needs with imported crude in 2021-22.
Meanwhile, India's crude oil import bill nearly doubled in 2021-22 from a year earlier. The country spent $119.2 billion in Financial Year 22, as compared to $62.2 billion in Financial Year 21. The Russia-Ukraine war had a big impact on prices.
The dependence on imported crude has been accompanied by a gradual decline in domestic production. In 2019-20, India produced 32.2 million tonnes of crude. In 2020-21, this fell to 30.5 million tonnes, and in 2021-22, it stood at 29.7 million tonnes.
If Nitin Gadkari's prediction does turn out to be true, it would not just help save a lot of money, but also help the environment as Indian metros struggles with air pollution.

Commuters in Delhi may face problems as various unions of auto, taxi and mini bus drivers have decided to go on strike on Monday.
The unions have been demanding hike in fare rates and slashing of CNG prices.
While most unions said they will be on one-day strike, the Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, which has members who drive for cab aggregators, said it will go an "indefinite" strike from Monday.
The unions have refused to call of their strike despite an announcement by the Delhi government to form a committee to consider fare revision in a time-bound manner.
"We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday in view of no action by the government to help us by slashing prices of fuels and revising fares," President, Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, Kamaljeet Gill, said.
General secretary of the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, Rajendra Soni, said the "unprecedented" hike in rates of CNG has taken a toll auto and cab drivers.
"We know that the Delhi government is forming some committee but we need solutions to our problems which is not in sight. We are demanding that the government (Centre and Delhi) provide Rs 35 per kg subsidy on CNG prices," he said.
Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers staged a protest at the Delhi Secretariat recently demanding subsidy on CNG prices.
"We cannot keep plying our autos and cabs bearing losses everyday as the CNG prices are galloping. This is a symbolic protest to oppose the price hike," Soni said.
There are over 90,000 autos and more than 80,000 registered taxis complementing the public transport system in the city.
General secretary of STA Operators Ekta Manch, Shyamlal Gola, said that RTV buses, numbering around 10,000, will also be off road in support of the demands to revise fares and bring down CNG prices.
The feeder buses play a crucial role in last mile connectivity running from Metro stations to interior localities in the city. PTI

Indraprastha Gas has hiked prices of CNG by Rs 2.5 per kg in Delhi on Thursday to Rs 71.61 per kg.
For Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, the CNG price has been hiked to Rs 74.17 per kg, while in Gurugram, it will cost Rs 79.94 per kg.
It should be noted that in the last 2 weeks, CNG prices have been hiked by Rs 11.6 per kg.
Piped Natual Gas or PNG prices have also been hiked by Rs 4.25 per SCM to Rs 45.86 per unit in Delhi and Rs 45.96 per unit in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. While people in Gurugram will have to pay Rs 44.06 per SCM.
CNG prices have been increased after petrol and diesel prices saw a Rs 10 per litre hike in the last 16 days.

Maruti&nbsp;Suzuki has announced the launch of the CNG&nbsp;variant of its new Celerio.&nbsp;
This step is in line with&nbsp;the company&rsquo;s commitment to strengthen its green vehicles portfolio in India.
Powered by next generation Dual Jet, Dual VVT K-Series 1.0L engine, the new Celerio with S-CNG technology delivers a mileage of 35.60 km/kg and has a CNG tank capacity of 60 litres, as per the company's exchange filing.
The CNG&nbsp;variant of Celerio&nbsp;comes in the VXI&nbsp;model at an ex-showroom price of Rs 6.58 lakh.
The Indian Government is working to reduce oil imports and enhance the share of natural gas in the country&rsquo;s primary energy mix from 6.2% now to 15% by 2030.
 Maruti Suzuki launched the all-new Celerio CNG in India today priced at Rs 6.58 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Unlike in most other CNG models, Maruti Suzuki&rsquo;s factory-fitted CNG kit is being offered in the mid-spec VXi trim as against the base LXi variant. The most fuel-efficient hatchback is upping it's game.&nbsp;Maruti Suzuki claims a fuel efficiency of 35.60km/kg for the new Celerio CNG &ndash; up from its predecessor's 30.47km/kg.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG comes with a detuned 1.0-litre dual-jet engine with dual VVT (variable valve timing). This powerplant puts out 56 bhp with 82 Nm and can be had with a five-speed manual gearbox only. In comparison to this, Celerio petrol has 66 bhp with 89 Nm. This means that Celerio CNG is less powerful than its petrol-only counterpart though it&nbsp;costs Rs 95,000 more than the Celerio VXi petrol manual.
