Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' Earns Critics Choice Nod

Just recently, the movie was named the Best International Film by New York Film Critics Circle and won an award in the same category at the Gotham Awards.

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" has bagged a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards.
The nominations for the awards ceremony, to be held on January 12, 2025, were announced on Thursday evening by the Critics Choice Association (CCA).
In the best foreign language film category, "All We Imagine As Light" is pitted against France's "Emilia P&eacute;rez", Latvia's "Flow", Ireland's "Kneecap", Brazil's "I'm Still Here" and Germany's "The Seed of the Sacred Fig", which is directed by dissident Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.
The nod at the Critics Choice Awards for "All We Imagine As Light" comes days after the film picked up two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
The Malayalam-Hindi film, which marks Kapadia's feature directorial debut, is nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language and the Best Direction - Motion Picture at the upcoming awards.
The film, an official India-French co-production, charted history by becoming the first Indian title from India to win the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
It follows two nurses Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha) from Kerala navigating life and love in Mumbai along with their friend and cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam).

"All We Imagine As Light" claimed the top spot at the Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of 50 best movies of the year.
The film is being distributed in the US by Janus Films and Sideshow. Rana Daggubati&rsquo;s Spirit Media released the film across India in November.
The 30th Critics Choice Awards will be hosted by Chelsea Handler. The awards gala will livestream on Lionsgate Play in India.

Despite Pushpa 2 enjoying multiple daily screenings, Motwane voiced his disappointment on Instagram Stories, emphasizing that Kapadia's Golden Globe-nominated film struggles to find a place on the big screen.
Motwane congratulated Kapadia on her two Golden Globe nominations for All We Imagine As Light, including Best Director, but criticized the industry's lack of support for her film.

India's film industry witnessed some resurgence in 2023, with 157.4 million moviegoers flocking to cinemas, marking a substantial 29% increase from the previous year and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 8%. This surge in attendance resulted in box office revenues exceeding ₹12,000 crore for the first time, according to a report by media consulting firm Ormax.
However, despite the impressive numbers, the industry faces a significant challenge in maintaining repeat visits. Trade experts indicate a persistent 20-25% dip in footfalls, attributed to the growing popularity of home viewing options and the escalating costs associated with cinema visits, transforming theatres into premium spaces.
This shift in viewing habits poses a looming threat to the traditional theater experience and presents a formidable obstacle for smaller-scale, content-driven films lacking star power. Consequently, the industry may increasingly rely on blockbuster, star-driven titles to sustain its momentum.
The Ormax report, based on research among 8,500 Indian audiences, revealed that the 157.4 million cinema-goers contributed to a total of 943 million footfalls at the domestic box office in 2023, averaging six films watched per person across all languages. Hindi-language cinema experienced the most significant growth, with its audience surging to 92 million, a remarkable 58% increase over 2022.
While Hindi cinema flourished, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films witnessed minor declines in audience shares, while Malayalam cinema saw a notable 19% increase in audience size. Despite these successes, the industry faces a pressing need to understand and address the evolving preferences of its diverse audience base.
With 2023 marking the first-ever year to cross the ₹12,000 crore mark at the Indian box office, the industry's financial success is evident. However, the disparity between increased cinema-goers and stagnant footfall rates underscores the challenges ahead. As ticket prices continue to rise and audience behavior evolves, the industry must adapt to ensure its continued growth and relevance in an ever-changing entertainment landscape.

A US man set a new world record by watching 777 films in a theatre in a year.

A US man has set a world record by watching a total of 777 films at a cinema in a year, breaking the previous record of 715. 32-year-old Zach Swope juggled his love for films and a day job, watching about three movies every day.
His world record did not cost him much as he purchased a $22 pass that allowed him to watch unlimited films at a US cinema chain. He often had to repeat films to break the record.
Swope started off his year-long attempt with the movie &lsquo;Minions: Rise of Gru&rsquo; and wrapped it up after a screen of &lsquo;Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny&rsquo;, according to Guinness World Records.
The record was set with certain restrictions in place. Swope was not allowed to do any other activities, including eating or drinking. The films had to be watched in their entirety, Guinness added.

The 32-year-old also ranked his films and said &lsquo;Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse&rsquo; was his favourite out of the lot.

While hearing a case on allowing outside food&nbsp; in cinema halls, a Supreme Court bench tickled some funny bones while trying to put forth its argument.&nbsp;
The bench comprising of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha was looking at petitions calling for a ban on food and beverages brought from outside in cinema halls.&nbsp;
The bench ruled in favour of theatres and multiplexes stating that they have the right to regulate food and beverages from outside and it did so with some light humour.&nbsp;
It set aside a Jammu &amp; Kashmir High Court order that allowed movie goers to bring food from outside, on the grounds that people should not be forced to eat whatever is served in the cinema halls.
The bench stated that cinema halls are for entertainment and like people choose which theatre to go to, the owners of the halls have the right to decide what is allowed and what is not allowed within the halls, as long as it does not endanger public safety or welfare.&nbsp;
'Theatres are private properties, the High Court overstepped its jurisdiction while saying any food can be allowed inside. Let the owners make the rules,' the judges said.&nbsp;
While trying to put forth his point, the CJI asked, 'What if someone starts getting jalebis inside cinema halls and then wipes their sticky fingers on the seats? I'm just stating an example. Who will clean it?'&nbsp;
The exchange became even funnier as he added the example of tandoori chicken, 'If someone has brought tandoori chicken then there will be complaints of bones left in the hall, that could be a bother to someone too.'&nbsp;
The High Court had stated in its judgement that free water must be provided by the theatres, especially to children.&nbsp;
Responding to this the bench said, 'Free water can be allowed but,' it continued with another cheeky example, 'what if the theatre sells nimbu paani for Rs 20, then you can't say I'll bring lemons from outside and squeeze it in my flask and make it inside the hall.'&nbsp;
The bench said whether or not to see a movie is entirely the choice of the viewer and, if he or she seeks to enter a cinema hall, they have to abide by the terms and conditions subject to which the entry is granted.
"It is open to the theatre owner to determine as to whether food from outside the precinct of the hall should be permitted within," it said, adding that it is evidently a matter of commercial decision of a theatre owner.
The Jammu &amp; Kashmir High Court in July 2018 had scrapped the ban on outside food and beverages in cinema halls reasoning that movie goers are forced to consume whatever is sold at the theatre.&nbsp;
In August 2018, the top court had stayed the high court direction to the cinema hall and multiplex owners of the state not to prohibit movie goers from carrying own food and water inside the theatres.
