Britain&rsquo;s King Charles III commemorated the sacrifices of service men and women from across the Commonwealth during World War II in his annual Christmas Day broadcast.
Opening his customary address with a reference to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings this year, which laid the foundations for the victory of the Allied Forces against Nazi Germany in 1944, the 76-year-old monarch said such examples of &ldquo;service and selflessness&rdquo; continue to inspire.
&ldquo;Earlier this year, as we commemorated the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the Queen (Camilla) and I had the enormous privilege of meeting, once again, the remarkable veterans of that very special generation who gave of themselves so courageously, on behalf of us all,&rdquo; said Charles.
&ldquo;Listening to these once-young service men and women touched us deeply as they spoke of their comrades, drawn from across the Commonwealth, who never returned and who now rest peacefully where they made the ultimate sacrifice. Their example of service and selflessness continues to inspire, across the generations,&rdquo; he said.
The King went on to strike a personal note in his message, filmed earlier at the Fitzrovia Chapel in London and aired on Wednesday evening, as he thanked the medics who cared for him and daughter-in-law Kate Middleton as they underwent cancer treatment.
&ldquo;From a personal point of view, I offer special, heartfelt thanks to the selfless doctors and nurses who, this year, have supported me and other members of my family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness, and have helped provide the strength, care and comfort we have needed. I am deeply grateful, too, to all those who have offered us their own kind words of sympathy and encouragement,&rdquo; he said.
The broadcast marked the first time that a British monarch&rsquo;s Christmas message has been filmed outside a royal residence since 2006, when Charles&rsquo; mother &ndash; the late Queen Elizabeth II &ndash; filmed her message at Southwark Cathedral in London.

The King said: &ldquo;I am speaking to you today from the Chapel of the former Middlesex Hospital in London &ndash; now itself a vibrant community space &ndash; and thinking especially of the many thousands of professionals and volunteers here in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth who, with their skills and out of the goodness of their heart, care for others &ndash; often at some cost to themselves.
&ldquo;On our recent visit to the South Pacific to attend the Commonwealth summit, I was reminded constantly of the strength which institutions, as well as individuals, can draw from one another. And of how diversity of culture, ethnicity and faith provides strength, not weakness.&rdquo;
Reflecting upon the anti-immigrant riots that flared up across the UK in August, the royal said he felt a &ldquo;sense of pride&rdquo; when communities came together in its aftermath with a spirit of harmony and to "repair".
&ldquo;To repair not just buildings, but relationships. And, most importantly, to repair trust; by listening and, through understanding, deciding how to act for the good of all,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But, on this Christmas Day, we cannot help but think of those for whom the devastating effects of conflict &ndash; in the Middle East, in Central Europe, in Africa and elsewhere &ndash; pose a daily threat to so many people&rsquo;s lives and livelihoods...The example that Jesus gave us is timeless and universal. It is to enter the world of those who suffer, to make a difference to their lives and so bring hope where there is despair,&rdquo; he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, the King and Queen Camilla were joined by Prince William and Kate and their three children &ndash; Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis &ndash; and other senior royals for the Christmas Day service at Sandringham in Norfolk, eastern England.
Excited crowds gathered as the family made the customary walk to St. Mary Magdalene Church on the royal estate.

Christmas, observed worldwide on December 25, is a time for reflection, family gatherings, and the sharing of meals and gifts. It is both a religious and cultural occasion commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. People around the globe take part in church services, where communities come together to pray and sing. Many also visit loved ones or participate in local events, strengthening communal bonds.
In addition to family reunions and festive meals, the holiday is marked by the tradition of carol singing, sparkling Christmas lights, and beautifully decorated trees.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government announced a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region ahead of Christmas and New Year's Eve. The decision, aimed at addressing the worsening air quality, will remain in effect through the holiday season.

The list was shared by a Reddit user, who shared a photo of a little girl's expensive list. This Christmas wish list had come from Project Santa, run by the United States Postal Service. In the letter, the girl mentioned a list of pricey electronic items like iPhone 15 Pro Max, &nbsp;Airpods Pro, Airpods Max, iPad Pro, a Drawing projector, a Polaroid camera, and a Macbook.
The caption of the Reddit post read, "My girlfriend was looking through these wanting to send a gift to some kid and I assumed these letters that get posted in here are families that can't afford to get the kids something so they use this so their Christmas doesn't suck."
The post further mentioned, "I'd say 90% of these kids are expecting $500+ gifts and my girlfriend can't afford to send something like that and I assume 90% of the population can't either. I feel like if I [were] asking for help I'd ask for something reasonable there's no way all these PS5s, iPhones/ iPads, and Jordans are being bought and sent out. How do these parents not get their kids to write something reasonable so they aren't super disappointed when they don't get $500-$2000 of electronics?"

As families frantically try to finalise their Christmas shopping at the busy Sandton City Mall in Johannesburg, Santa Claus was there to entertain excited families amid the power cuts.
&ldquo;We have to look at the schedule for load shedding (power cuts) first and then we can do everything that needs to be cooked, or we use a gas stove, and we can lay the table outside; do the candlelights and it's going to be beautiful,&rdquo; said an optimistic Molalo Mishapo.
Cindy Naidoo said while things have been tough this year due to rising inflation and continuous power cuts, it was important for people to celebrate being healthy after living through the pandemic.
&ldquo;I think coming from COVID, you've got to just...it's a blessing. I think, just to be happy and healthy. Forget about the lights and just live,&rdquo; she said.
Natasha Singh, who is visiting Johannesburg from Durban was fortunate enough not to feel the effects of the power cuts, but said they had been hectic.

Thousands of flights were canceled and homeless shelters were overflowing Thursday amid one of the most treacherous holiday travel seasons the U.S. has seen in decades, with temperatures plummeting 50 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas and forecasters warning of an impending &ldquo;bomb cyclone&rdquo; that could make conditions even worse before Christmas.
The frigid air was moving through the central United States to the east, with windchill advisories affecting about 135 million people over the coming days, weather service meteorologist Ashton Robinson Cook said Thursday.
More than 2,156 flights within, into or out of the U.S. had been canceled as of Thursday afternoon, according to the tracking site FlightAware.
Airlines have also canceled 1,576 Friday flights.

The viral photo has been shared by more than 8,000 people with netizens pointing the contrastig celebrations in Ukaraine, where the Russian invasion will be completing a year in about a month's time.

Police said that the basement door that the woman used to enter the townhouse had signs of forced entry.

A woman has been accused of trying to steal Christmas gifts from the house of Hollywood actor Robert De Niro.
The incident occurred around 2:45 am on 19 December 2022. Police arrested the alleged serial burglar from the living room of De Niro's Manhattan home. De Niro, who had been upstairs, came down to the living room as the woman was being arrested.
Police said that the basement door that the woman used to enter the townhouse had signs of forced entry. Officers said that they had been tracking the 30-year-old woman after a string of recent robberies.
A spokesperson for the 79-year-old actor said he wouldn't be making statements about the attempted robbery. De Niro's spokesperson said it was a temporary rental home being used by the actor.

People's demand for hotels changing? Here's what new generation is preferring 

Demand for hotels is up by 17 per cent and now at par with the pre-COVID level

As the year-end festivities and Christmas Holidays are around the corner, demand for homestays and 3-star hotels have surged and contributed to almost 60% of the searches for hotels for the upcoming holiday season.&nbsp;
According to the latest Justdial Consumer Insights report, Demand for Home Stays saw a meteoric 135 per cent jump, and that for 3-star hotels rose by 18 per cent, while that for others remained stable.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Among Tier-I cities, demand for homestays remained the highest in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi.
While searches for Hotels soared, searches for Bars, Fast Food, Food Delivery, and Dhabas made up for the top-5 most searched services during this holiday and party season. Hotels dominated with 27 per cent of the overall searches followed by Bars (23 per cent), Fast Food (18 per cent), Food Delivery (17 per cent), and Dhabas (14 per cent).
