It was seen as a move to secure the support of the sizeable Dalit population in Punjab. Meanwhile, Sidhu handled the reins of the party's state unit.
Another tug-of-war erupted over the issue of Congress' CM candidate. After many bouts of infighting, Rahul Gandhi announced Channi as the CM face, claiming that the choice was made after voting of party workers, leaders, and supporters.
Despite the many measures, Congress doesn't seem to have been able to pile the blame for its government's shortcomings on Amarinder Singh, who floated a new outfit - Punjab Lok Congress - for the polls. Issues like inaction over the Bargari sacrilege case, and law and order issues seem to have put Congress on the backfoot. Even anger against the BJP over the now-repealed farm laws couldn't be capitalised on by a scattered Congress.
As a slight consolation, Congress was the only party apart from AAP to secure seats in double digits - 18 - while the AAP won 92. All the others like BJP and Akali Dal were reduced to single digits.

Reacting to raids that have come amid campaigning for the Assembly Elections next month, the chief minister termed them as pressure tactic by the central government.
"When there were polls in West Bengal, such attacks took place on Mamata Banerjee's relatives. Now, in the same pattern in Punjab, ED is trying to put pressure, give trouble. An attempt is being made to create all kinds of pressure," Channi alleged while interacting with reporters.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday expressed regret after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to cut short his visit to the state, but asserted that there was no security lapse.
PM Modi, who landed in Bathinda and had to take the road route to Hussainiwala in Ferozepur because of inclement weather, was stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes due to a blockade by some farmers, an incident the Union Home Ministry described as a "major lapse" in his security.
The CM said the entire incident will be probed and denied any security lapse or situation of any attack.
Channi shared a minute-to-minute programme of Modi's visit, saying three helipads were set up at Ferozepur as he was to reach from Bathinda by air.
There was a sudden change in the PM's travel plan from Bathinda to Ferozepur and everything was handled by central agencies, he told reporters.
"It is wrong to say that there was a security lapse," the CM said, stressing that the Punjab Police had a limited role.
"The prime minister was to visit for the inauguration (of development projects) and address a political rally. We regret that he had to return due to the blockade en route," Channi told reporters.
"After all, he is the prime minister of the country. We respect him. There is a democratic system and federal system," said Channi.
"We regret that he had to go back and we are pained. We respect our prime minister," the CM said.
The CM said after some agitators had come on the road, they were told to take another route or try to fly by chopper.
But they decided to return, said Channi.
When a reporter asked who were the officials at the Bathinda airport who were reportedly told by the prime minister that they should thank Channi as his life was saved in the situation, the CM replied, "If he (PM) has said something in anger or with political thought, I don't want to make any comment." "However, I want to say one thing that I would have spilled my own blood before any harm to him, this is the spirit of Punjabis," said Channi, adding that a Punjabi will prefer to die rather than attack the guest visiting the state.

The CM said the entire incident will be probed and denied any security lapse or situation of any attack.
Channi told reporters that he doesn't want politics on the issue insisting that the Prime Minister is of the country and he would give his own life to save PM.
The Prime Minister had reportedly told the officials at the Bathinda airport sarcastically that they should thank Channi as his life was saved in the situation. "A Punjabi will prefer to die rather than attack the guest visiting the state," CM Channi said.

Channi shared a minute-to-minute programme of Modi's visit, saying three helipads were set up at Ferozepur as he was to reach from Bathinda by air.
There was a sudden change in the PM's travel plan from Bathinda to Ferozepur and everything was handled by central agencies, he told reporters.

"It is wrong to say that there was a security lapse," the CM said, stressing that the Punjab Police had a limited role.
"The prime minister was to visit for the inauguration (of development projects) and address a political rally. We regret that he had to return due to the blockade en route," Channi told reporters.
"After all, he is the prime minister of the country. We respect him. There is a democratic system and federal system," said Channi.
"We regret that he had to go back and we are pained. We respect our prime minister," the CM said.
The CM said after some agitators had come on the road, they were told to take another route or try to fly by chopper.
But they decided to return, said Channi.
When a reporter asked who were the officials at the Bathinda airport who were reportedly told by the prime minister that they should thank Channi as his life was saved in the situation, the CM replied, "If he (PM) has said something in anger or with political thought, I don't want to make any comment." "However, I want to say one thing that I would have spilled my own blood before any harm to him, this is the spirit of Punjabis," said Channi, adding that a Punjabi will prefer to die rather than attack the guest visiting the state.

Earlier taking a swipe at Kejriwal's clothes, the chief minister had asked why cannot Kejriwal get good clothes stitched for himself when he gets paid the highest salary?
To which Kejriwal said, "It's okay if you don't like my clothes. But they are liked by the people. Leave the clothes, just tell the people when you will fulfill your election promises?"
Channi also asked if Kejriwal knew how to milk buffalos or play 'gilli danda' game.
"I have slept in a mud house. I know how to deal with the scorching sun by using a wet cloth and how to milk a buffalo," Channi said.
