Speaking to reporters, Champai said that he stepped down after the JMM and alliance legislators gave consensus to make Hemant the leader of the alliance.
"A few days ago, I was made the Chief Minister and I got the responsibility of the state. After Hemant Soren was back, our alliance took this decision and we chose Hemant Soren as our leader. Now, I have resigned from the post of chief minister," Champai told reporters.
Earlier in the day, leaders and MLAs of the ruling coalition at a meeting at Champai Soren&rsquo;s residence here unanimously decided to elect Hemant Soren as the JMM legislature party leader.
"I have resigned as per the decision of the JMM-led alliance. Our alliance is strong," Champai Soren said after coming out of Raj Bhavan.
"All know what had happened with Hemant Soren Ji... I was given the responsibility by the coalition partners. Now, the alliance has decided in favour of Hemant Soren Ji," he said.
Hemant Soren told the media all formalities to form the government are complete.
"Everything will be disclosed soon," the JMM executive president said when asked about the swearing-in.
He will be the chief minister of Jharkhand for the third time.
The ruling coalition delegation which met the governor included state Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, state Congress president Rajesh Thakur, RJD minister Satyanand Bhokta, CPI(ML) legislator Vinod Singh, besides Champai Soren and Hemant Soren.
After spending around five months in jail, Hemant Soren was released on June 28 after the high court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.
He had resigned as the CM shortly before his arrest on January 31.&nbsp;

Jharkhand&rsquo;s JMM-led coalition government headed by Chief Minister Champai Soren won the vote of confidence in the assembly on Monday.
While 47 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion, 29 legislators opposed it in the 81-member assembly. Independent legislator Saryu Roy abstained.
Seventy-seven MLAs were present in the assembly during the voting.
The ruling alliance comprises the JMM, Congress and the RJD while it is supported from outside by the lone CPIML(L) legislator.
The BJP-led opposition has 26 legislators of the saffron party and three of the AJSU Party.
JMM legislature party leader Champai Soren took oath as the chief minister of Jharkhand on February 2, after his predecessor Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last week in a money laundering case.
Champai Soren was given 10 days to prove his government&rsquo;s majority on the floor of the house. He decided that the trust vote will be held on February 5.
Hemant Soren, who is in ED custody now, took part in the trust vote following permission granted by a special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court.
About 38 legislators of the ruling alliance had gone to Hyderabad, the capital of Congress-ruled Telangana, in two flights on February 2, amid the coalition's fears that the BJP might attempt to "poach" them in the run-up to the trust vote. They returned to Ranchi on Sunday evening ahead of the trust vote.&nbsp;

Chief Minister Champai Soren on February 5 moved confidence motion in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly. Addressing the Assembly, the CM praised his predecessor Hemant Soren and attacked BJP.
"I proudly say that I am part-2 of Hemant Soren. [Hemant Soren worked] in areas like education, farming in the state...He sensed the situation and started a pension scheme," said the CM.

A day ahead of the vote on February 4, the legislators of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance landed at the Birsa Munda Airport in Jharkhand on a chartered flight. They stayed at a resort in Hyderabad for the last three days to thwart any attempt of poaching by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The ruling coalition parties exuded confidence in winning the trust vote in the assembly on February 5.
Our MLAs are united... We have the support of 48 to 50 legislators," minister Alamgir Alam said, reports PTI news agency.
JMM lawmaker Mithilesh Thakur also asserted that the JMM-led coalition will sail through the trust vote.
"Many BJP legislators are also in support of the alliance in the state," he claimed.
Soren was administered the oath of office by Governor C P Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan on February 2.
Along with him, senior Congress leader Alamgir Alam and RJD leader Satyanand Bhokta took oath as ministers.
Soren has claimed the support of 47 MLAs, comfortably crossing the halfway mark of 41 needed to form the government. The BJP and its allies, on the other hand, have 29 MLAs.&nbsp;

Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday nominated JMM legislative party leader Champai Soren as the chief minister and invited him to take the oath, capping a day of fast-paced developments.
The nomination took place hours after Soren urged the governor to accept his claim to form the government at the earliest as there was "confusion" in the state which was without a chief minister since the resignation of Hemant Soren on Wednesday, deepening the political crisis.
Governor's Principal Secretary Nitin Madan Kulkarni told PTI: &ldquo;We have invited him to take the oath. Now they will decide when to take the oath.&rdquo; Champai Soren has been given 10 days to prove his government's majority, state Congress chief Rajesh Thakur said.
Congress is a key constituent of the alliance.
Asked when the new chief minister will take the oath, Thakur told PTI: "We will ensure that it is taken by noon on Friday before the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra enters the state." Amid concerns over the delay in the appointment of Champai Soren as the next chief minister by the governor, the majority alliance had also taken steps to shift its MLAs from Jharkhand in two chartered planes, in a bid to ring-fence them against a possible poaching attempt by the BJP.
The alliance had planned to take its MLAs to Hyderabad from Ranchi. Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana which is governed by the Congress.
However, the planes could not take off due to poor visibility, airport sources said.
The MLAs, who waited for around two hours at the airport, returned to the Circuit House here, where they had been staying.
"We told the governor that I have already submitted the letter of support required for the formation of the new government and he should soon start the process for the same," Champai Soren told reporters after the meeting with the governor earlier in the day.
Champai Soren, who had gone with four other alliance legislators to meet Radhakrishnan, also said that the governor had assured them that he would take a decision soon on their request for the government formation.
"We stand united. Our alliance is very strong. No one can break it," he asserted.

Earlier in the day, the JMM legislative party leader also wrote to the governor, saying: "Hemant Soren had tendered his resignation as the chief minister on Wednesday night, which was accepted by the Raj Bhavan at 8.45 pm.
Hemant Soren was arrested by the ED on Wednesday in a money laundering case after he resigned as Jharkhand chief minister.
"There is no government in existence in the state for the last 18 hours. There is a situation of confusion. You are the constitutional head. We all the MLAs and the people expect that you will pave the way for the formation of a popular government...," Champai Soren's letter read.
Meanwhile, Hemant Soren, who was produced before the special PMLA court in Ranchi, was sent to judicial custody for a day.
He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday after over seven hours of questioning on money laundering charges in an alleged land fraud case. Before the arrest, he tendered his resignation as Jharkhand chief minister.
The 48-year-old leader has also moved the Supreme Court challenging his arrest and the matter has been posted for hearing on Friday.
Reacting sharply to the delay in appointing Champai Soren as the Chief Minister, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said: "In the House of 81 MLAs, only 41 form a majority. Despite having the support of 48 MLAs, not inviting Champai Soren ji to form the government is clearly contempt of the Constitution and denial of public mandate." In a post in Hindi on X, he added: "Nails are being hammered in the coffin of Indian democracy by His Excellencies", in an apparent reference to the role of governors in states.&nbsp;

In his first reaction after arrest, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren shared a poem in Hindi on X.
He wrote, "Life is a great battle, I have fought every moment, I will fight every moment but I will not beg for compromise." He said that he won't accept defeat.
Soren was arrested after a marathon seven hours of grilling by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering probe into an alleged land scam.
JMM's Champai Soren has been named the new chief minister.
Earlier, the legislators gathered at Hemant Soren's residence elected the transport minister Champai Soren as the leader of the JMM legislative party with the party spokesperson Vinod Pandey saying that a consensus was reached on his name.
A legislator from the Serikela assembly constituency for more than three decades since 1991, Champai Soren is known to be a loyalist of JMM supremo Shibu Soren.
Born in November 1956 at Jilinggora village in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Champai Soren is a matriculate and father of seven children. He is the son of a farmer and is not related to the Hemant Soren's family.

Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren is in the Enforcement Directorate's custody, according to JMM MP Mahua Maji. ED questioned him at his residence on Wednesday in connection with an alleged land scam.
ED officials reached Soren's house in Ranchi on Wednesday afternoon to question him.
They had gone to his Delhi residence on Monday to question him but said he was 'untraceble'. ED also searched his Delhi house and seized Rs 36 lakh, an SUV and some "incriminating" documents.
Earlier, the ED had recorded the statement of the 48-year-old chief minister on January 20 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation pertains to a "huge racket of illegal change of ownership of land by the mafia" in Jharkhand, according to the agency.
The ED has, so far, arrested 14 people in the case, including 2011-batch IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan who served as the director of the state's social welfare department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hemant Soren filed a complaint against ED officials accusing them of harassment.
Soren alleged that the ED conducted the search operation at his residence in the national capital to "harass and malign him and his entire community", the officials said, quoting the FIR.
"An FIR has been lodged against some senior ED officials... we got the application from the chief minister," Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Sinha told PTI.
"My family members and I have suffered and experienced immense mental, psychological and emotional harm because of the acts committed...," Soren said in the FIR, according to the officials. The FIR has been lodged under sections of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act that include instituting false, malicious or vexatious suit or criminal or other legal proceedings against a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe besides intentionally insulting or intimidating "with intent to humiliate a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe in any place within public view".
The sections also include abuse of any member of SC/ST by caste name in any place within public view or by words either written or spoken promoting feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will against them by "whoever, not being a member of a SC or a ST".
